This is the third time that Adelaide has hosted the Masters Australian Football Carnival, and your 2005 program promises a brilliant celebration of competition, matched with a healthy dash of skill, fun and friendship. You are among more than 800 competitors who are here to enjoy a fantastic football carnival in a relaxed city that loves sport and always welcomes the young at heart. Indeed, this is a big year in South Australia for Masters Sports, with our State also hosting the 10th Australian Masters Games from 7 to 16 October. I am delighted that the South Australian Government is supporting your Carnival, and I trust you enjoy every moment during the seven days of competition. Please consider staying a little longer to enjoy all that Adelaide and South Australia has to offer, from our regional food and wines to our many natural attractions. You will always be welcome in South Australia. Jane Lomax-Smith Minister for Tourism State Member for Adelaide 1 Magnificent Masters Football NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S Welcome Welcome to the 23rd Masters Australian Football (MAF) Carnival. This is my first year as National President and I’m very proud to announce that the Adelaide carnival promises to be the largest in our history with 40 teams in 9 divisions and 4 age groups. We would expect our total numbers including families, coaches, managers and umpires to be around the 1500 mark. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we had 6 teams in total at the 1983 carnival in Melbourne. With the support of the South Australia Tourist Commission the MAF Board was only too pleased in awarding the 2005 Carnival to our host state association, South Australia MAF. We wish the organizing committee all the very best for a successful carnival. Our special thanks to the Westminster School and particularly Facilities Manager Marcia Evans for the generosity in allowing the carnival to be hosted at their magnificent school. We will enjoy 4 designated football ovals with first class facilities not available at any previous carnival. Since the Hobart Carnival of 2000 the MAF Board was directed by all states to undertake the coordination of all future carnivals. We have now organized successful championships on the Gold Coast, in Melbourne, Perth and Cairns and we are more than confident of a very successful Adelaide carnival. With the size and popularity of the carnivals all future locations need to be able to cater for our growing requirements both in playing venues and social facilities. It is a challenge that our Board looks forward to achieving. On behalf of MAF we wish all participants, coaches, umpires and spectators a very enjoyable and injury free carnival. Please take advantage of the hospitality offered by our host and remember it’s ‘Football for Fun’. Peter Coffey NATIONAL PRESIDENT 2 Magnificent Masters Football MAFSA PRESIDENT’S Welcome I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the National MAF Executive, all players and their wives, partners and families to the 2005 Master Australian Football National Carnival. South Australia last hosted a national carnival back in 1996 and many of you who attended that carnival will not only remember it as being one of the great carnivals we have held, but will also remember how the skies opened up on us for the entire week and made it one of the wettest carnivals also ever held. Lets hope the Gods are shining on us little better this time and we can all enjoy a typical Adelaide October week where the temperatures should be ideal to play footy and you can relax on the beautiful surroundings that the Westminster School has on offer. I would like to acknowledge and thank the following major sponsors: Adelaide Major Events, Coopers Brewery, Vili’s Cakes & Folletts Lake Breeze Wines. Without them we would not be able to provide you a carnival of this quality. This year we will see a record number of teams participating in a National Carnival. There will be a total of 40 teams and this carnival promises to be the biggest carnival ever held, showing again the popularity of our great game. I would also like to thank Marcia Evans and her hard working team at Westminster School who have gone out their way on many occasions to meet the continual changing and challenging issues with hosting a carnival of this size. I have no doubt that once you have experienced the fantastic facilities on offer at the School you will be suitably impressed. I would also like to thank and acknowledge the tireless efforts of our organising committee. Many long hours have been put in by many people and I would like to pay special thanks to the likes of Hughie Barker, Jim Potts, Colin and Marlene Withy, Deb and Clarrie Fisher, Deb and Trevor Prior and the many others who have helped putting this carnival together in one way or another. This years National carnival is much more than just Football. Of course this is first and foremost for a lot of people but we also acknowledge that without the help of the wives, partners and families a lot of players would not be able to enjoy the carnival as much as they do.The Westminster School has many family orientated activities for all to enjoy. Whether it be in the 10 lap swimming pool or the 280 seat auditorium or just relaxing on the lawns or in the dining area, there is sure to be something for everyone at this years carnival. On behalf of the MAFSA Executive and the MAF Carnival committee we extend a very warm welcome to all our visitors and we wish all players a very successful and injury free carnival. I look forward to catching up with many old friends from previous carnivals and I know that you will enjoy the Adelaide carnival as much as you have the other carnivals. We have a very dedicated team of people ready to help you and your families with any enquiry that you might have over the week long event. Please do not hesitate to contact myself or any other member of our committee if we can be of any assistance. All the very best and here’s to a fantastic and hopefully injury free Carnival, blessed with magnificent SA weather. Mick Guerin President - MAFSA 3 Magnificent Masters Football PATRON’S MESSAGE The Australian Football league is delighted to welcome Australian Football Masters from around the country to Adelaide for this year’s Masters National Carnival. With 40 teams and some 820 players to participate, this will be one of the largest Australian Football Carnivals ever staged. Playing under the motto ‘The older we get, the faster we were’ it is wonderful to see so many masters still enjoying active involvement in our great game. As one of the Australian Football Heartlands, Adelaide with its excellent playing facilities and depth of football support is well placed to stage this significant event. It is very pleasing to note that a contingent of more than 40 umpires, all with considerable experience, will volunteer their services in the spirit of the occasion. The AFL is committed to supporting and encouraging Community Football at all levels and age groups. Accordingly, I congratulate the organisers on bringing together such a large number of grass roots participants and wish all concerned a great carnival. All participants are requested to be aware that MAF bans the consumption of alcohol or taking of alcohol onto any playing arena at any time during a carnival. Any breaches will incur penalties for the state that the offender represents. CONCEPT OF MASTERS AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL Masters Australian Football (MAF) is designed to allow mature aged Australian Rules Footballers the opportunity to participate safely in the great game of Australian Rules Football and to compete with their aged peers. The opportunity to participate, to compete and to be physically active is the main motivation of the competitors. Winning is not important and the game should be played in the spirit of “Football for Fun”. Social interaction is also a very important feature of MAF for all participants. PLAYERS CODES OF CONDUCT • Play by the rules at all times. • Never argue with an official; if you disagree, discuss the matter with your coach after the game. 8 Magnificent Masters Football MASTERS AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL • Control your temper; verbal abuse or racial or religious vilification of other players, or provoking an opponent is not acceptable. • Be a team player; work equally hard for yourself and your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will you. • Be a good sport; applaud all good plays by your team, opponent or the other team. • Treat all players fairly; treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do no interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of another player. • Co-operate willingly with your coach, team mates and opponents. • Play for the “fun of it” and not just to please coaches. COACHES • Be reasonable in your demands; consider players’ time, energy and enthusiasm levels. • Avoid over playing the talented players; the just ‘average players’ need and deserve equal time. • Keep winning in perspective; maximise players’ participation for fun and enjoyment. • Stress safety always; ensure that equipment and facilities are safe. • Consider maturity levels; match up practice schedules, practice activities and degree of competition with maturity levels. • Develop team respect; for the ability of opponents as well as for the judgment of officials and opposing coaches. • Recognise the importance of injury; seek and follow the physician’s advice concerning the return of injured players to training. • Keep informed with sound principles of coaching and skill development. • Teach fair play, help players understand the responsibilities and implications of freedom to choose between fair and unfair play. ADMINISTRATORS/ OFFICIALS • Ensure equal participation for all; provide equal opportunities for all regardless of ability, size, shape, age, disability or ethnic origin. • Ensure that the rules, equipment, length of games and training schedules take into consideration age, ability and maturity level of the participants. • Stress enjoyment; remember that players participate for enjoyment and play down the importance of rewards. • Promote fair play; ensure that coaches, officials, sponsors, physicians and participants understand their responsibilities regarding fair play. 9 Magnificent Masters Football MASTERS AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL • Where appropriate modify rules and regulations to match the skill level of participants and their needs. • Promote respect for opponents and condemn unsporting behaviour. SPECTATORS • Applaud good performance and efforts from each team. • Congratulate all participants upon their performance regardless of the game’s outcome. • Respect officials’ decisions at all times. Remember all officials are there for the fun of the game and are volunteers; as such all should be treated with respect. • Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players. • Show respect for your team’s opponents. Without them there would be no game. • Encourage players to follow the rules and the officials’ decisions. • Do not use foul language or harass players, coaches or officials. Each club, state or territory is responsible for the behaviour of their spectators and officials during and at the conclusion of their games. Guidelines to Participating in Sport in Extreme Heat We request you adhere to the following guidelines when playing in different environments to minimise the impact of the climate and prevent heat injury. Heat injury can lead to impaired player performance and physical distress such as dizziness, headaches and collapse. In its extreme form it can be life threatening. Players are requested to take this issue seriously and prepare for playing in heat and humidity climates by: • Ensure adequate fluid intake prior to the game and during the game (500 – 700ml per quarter) (This intake does not include alcoholic!) • Drink plenty of water and electrolyte drinks. Powerade and water are available in the drinks tent • Slip, slap and slop! Wear hats and sunscreen • Avoid adrenaline-like medication • Rotate players through the interchange bench • Use cooling aids like ice vests, spray bottles, sponges and fans • If feeling unwell, seek medical attention immediately. MASTERS AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Hall of Fame was implemented by the Board of Management for Masters Australian Football in 1997 to recognise the outstanding personal contributions of players, umpires, administrators and supporters to the development of Superules and subsequently Masters Australian Football since its inception in 1980. In the first year the nine member associations were each asked to nominate the person they thought had made the most significant contribution to their state game. These nine nominations were officially inducted into the “Hall of Fame” at the Inaugural “Hall of Fame” Dinner at the Geelong Football Club which was held during the Geelong Carnival in 1997. In 1998 and 1999, in order to maintain the prestige of the award, only five nominations were inducted into the Masters Australian Football Hall of Fame. In year 2000 only two people were selected and in year 2001 the Hall of Fame Selection Committee extended the rules to induct up to three new members each year. The induction of Hall of Fame nominees will continue to be held at a formal dinner during the National Carnival and all MAF supporters are welcome to attend. Member Associations are asked to support the occasion by each committing at least two reserved tables for the dinner. This year the Hall of Fame Dinner will be held at ‘The Park’ Reception Centre, AAMI Stadium, Adelaide on Thursday, 6th October from 7 pm. For tickets to this Dinner please contact your State President. HALL OF FAME GUIDELINES Each State Association is asked to nominate one person from their State Association for the Hall of Fame. Please note up to three Nominations will be inducted in 2001. Objective: To recognise outstanding service by an individual. Principles: 1. It is an award, NOT A RIGHT OR A MILESTONE. 2. Outstanding service is defined as a contribution which: - is above normal expectation - demonstrates commitment - and sustained over a significant time frame 18 Magnificent Masters Football MASTERS AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME Guidelines: 1. Players, umpires, administrators and supporters are eligible for nomination. 2. There is no restriction on the number of times a person can be nominated. 3. An independent panel will receive nominations via the General Manager and make recommendations to the National Board. 4. Each State/Territory can nominate up to one person per year. 5. No nominations will be made by the National Board. 6. Up to three nominations will be inducted into the Hall of Fame each year 7. Nominees must have completed at least 15 years involvement in Masters Australian Football. 8. The decision of the National Board will be final.
