ABB Ireland
Service
ABB’s dedicated service team offers
our customers a complete service for
the installation, operation, maintenance,
upgrading, refurbishment and repair
of Low, Medium & High Voltage
Apparatus.
ABB has the people, skills and indepth knowledge to cover the full
spectrum of service requirements,
from routine inspection of a 10
kV network right through to the
construction management, installation
and commissioning of a new 400
kV GIS substation, and we can also
support equipment from just about any
manufacturer.
This comprehensive approach helps
customers throughout Ireland to ensure
the safe, reliable, efficient and profitable
performance of their power networks.
Getting the most from your assets
ABB can take complete responsibility for the inspection,
maintenance and repair of your medium voltage distribution
equipment, as well as associated control and protection
systems. This keeps your critical high-value network assets
in optimum condition for maximum reliability, safety and
availability.
Our emphasis is on providing a whole-life service from
installation, through to normal preventive maintenance, repair
and retrofit programmes that can provide an extra lease of
life, to end-of-life management with minimum environmental
impact.
Understanding your assets
We can often identify potential faults before they occur by
implementing condition based maintenance and then taking
correct action. Should a major problem arise, we will respond
quickly, carrying out repairs, replacing parts or carrying out
more extensive work such as refurbishment.
Quality systems
ABB operates the very highest global, national and
industry-specific quality standards including ISO 9001. Our
environmental management systems conform to ISO 14001
and our health and safety management system is certified to
the ohsas 18001 standard .
Low, Medium & High voltage products service
ABB Service provides comprehensive service support for
ABB’s extensive global medium voltage products, Distribution
automation products, switching, limiting, measuring and
sensing devices, switchgear, modular substation packages
and related services.

One Fit
ABB One fit retrofit solution allows legacy and phased out
circuit breakers to be replaced by current technological
versions. ABB circuit breaker retrofit is a cost effective
switchgear modernization solution. We can offer a One fit
retrofit solution for exchanging other manufacturer’s, Mv
circuit breakers with ABB circuit breakers into the original
manufactures switchgear reducing down time & cost.
Transformer oil sampling
ABB’s service engineers are trained in the skilled techniques
needed to obtain the reliable and uncontaminated samples of
transformer oil required for accurate laboratory analysis.
The role of the oil in the transformer is to both cool and
insulate the apparatus inside. In doing so it bathes every
internal component. As a result, the oil contains around
70 percent of the available diagnostic information for the
transformer. The challenge is to access this information
and analyse it effectively to provide an early indication of a
developing condition such as tap changer arcing.
Benchmarking
ABB recommends that the best information can be obtained
from oil sampling by viewing trends. It is useful therefore to
take a benchmark sample when a transformer is energized or
an oil treatment performed. Further samples should then be
taken at regular intervals so that any variation in quality can
be measured in order to monitor developing faults.
Transformer Assessment
Partial Discharge Monitoring
The major cause of long term degradation and ultimate
failure of HV insulation is erosion and tracking due to partial
discharge.
These discharges can be detected and monitored by the
application of non-invasive measuring equipment.
The benefits of these techniques are:
Potential sources of failure can be identified
Intermittent activity can be located
No plant outage is required.
Detection of such discharges will allow decisions to be
made about remedial action.
SF6 Handling
ABB is fully trained and compliant with Handling SF6 Gas.
As well as Government regulation, there are a number
of standards that are associated with the handling,
usage, transportation and storage of SF6. The ABB Gas
management policies, procedures, systems and business
practices have been set up to comply with local and
international standards. The likelihood of damage to
equipment is high if contaminated gas is inadvertently used
in the maintenance or installation of switchgear. ABB Service
engineers are continuously trained and certified to handle SF6
and follow correct gas handling procedures.
-
Commissioning – Top up, Safety check on installed gas
Decommissioning – Reclaiming gas, recycle for reuse.
Maintenance – Inspection and assessment,
Analyses- check gas quality and purity,
Fault Finding - leakage detection and repair, Refilling
with new gas.
SF6 Gas is a ozone depleting gas, and under the Kyoto
protocol has to be controlled
Traditional oil-testing programmes utlize only a few diagnostic
parameters, leaving a vast amount of potential oil-based
information unexplored. Yet surveys of failed transformers
reveal that many failures can be attributed to problems that
could have been properly managed with an early diagnosis
through a more detailed analysis of the insulating fluid. ABB
works with a leading test laboratory to provide (transformer
assessment) that offers a comprehensive assessment of the
dielectric and mechanical state of the transformer.
Transformer oil analysis services provided by ABB include:
Routine tests – for moisture, acidity and dielectric
breakdown
PCB levels
Dissolved gas analysis (DGA)
Furan analysis
Transformer assessment
