Strauss, MD John S. Strauss, MD., 88, Professor Emeritus, died peacefully in July 2014. John was Chair of Dermatology at Iowa from 1978-1998 where he mentored many academicians and served as leader of numerous professional organizations. John’s commitment to his patients, family and the field of dermatology continue to inspire those who knew him. John remained an active member of the department until his retirement in 2000. In addition, John and his wife Susan have been generous longtime patrons of medicine and the arts in Iowa City. George J. University of Iowa Department of Dermatology New Dermatology Faculty John Selby, MD, PhD, joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in July 2014. Born and raised in Quincy, Illinois, John earned his PhD in mechanical engineering (2007) and MD (2010) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Following a preliminary year of internal medicine training at the University of Illinois, he completed his dermatology residency at the University of Iowa, serving as chief resident from 2013-2014. John’s research interests include keratinocyte mechanobiology in the context of blistering skin diseases and chronic wounds. His clinical interests include immunobullous disease, lichen planus, psoriasis, drug-associated exanthems, and contact dermatitis. He has been married to his wife Jennifer- a civil engineer at Foth Infrastructure & Environment - since 2001. Together, they are the proud parents of Emma, Patrick, and Will, ages 11, 8, and 4. The Selby family loves to watch Big Ten sporting events, and they have enjoyed rooting for the Hawkeyes since moving to Iowa City…except when they play the Fighting Illini! Hillary Johnson, MD, PhD, grew up in Ottumwa, Iowa, and attended the University of Iowa in 1992, graduating with highest honors in microbiology. She received her medical degree and doctorate in immunology at Washington University in St Louis. She completed her preliminary internal medicine year at the Harvard medical school-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and her dermatology training at New York University. She continued her training in Mohs surgery for 2 years at Columbia University working with Desiree Ratner. Hillary briefly served on staff at the Brooklyn VA hospital and performed private practice Mohs surgery in New Jersey. For a number of years, she served as the Director of Mohs Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and as a Mohs fellowship site director in conjunction with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. In 2014, Hillary transitioned to the University of Iowa as a Clinical Associate Professor, where she joined Marta Van Beek, MD, in the Mohs surgery unit. Nicole Candelario-Gonzalez, MD, joined faculty an Associate in October 2014. She was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and attended the University of Puerto Rico, graduating summa cum laude in biology. She received her medical degree from University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, graduating summa cum laude. After a transitional year in San Juan City Hospital, she completed her dermatology training at the University of Puerto Rico. Nicole moved to Iowa with her husband, who is completing a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Her areas of interest include medical dermatology and dermatopathology and she is seeing patients at both UIHC and the Iowa River Landing locations. She will start a dermatopathology fellowship with Dr. Clay Cockerell at UT Southwestern in July 2015. Volume 9, Winter 2014/2015 University of Iowa Department of Dermatology July 2014 — Meet our new residents! Teambuilding at the Resident Retreat! New dermatology residents (pictured left to right). Nicolas Bontumasi was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan where he majored in Biology and met his wife, Taylor. He then went to the Washington University in St. Louis for medical school. His wife was previously an elementary school teacher who now cares for their 18 month old son, Noah. Matthew Landherr was born in Iowa City and raised in Marion, IA. He has strong family ties, being the middle of 7 children and a proud uncle to 8 (and counting) nieces and nephews. He majored in Biology and Spanish at Iowa State University and then completed medical school and the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Matt enjoys watching and participating in sports and spending time with family and friends. Pooja Chitgopeker was born in England and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, where she attended the University of Auckland Medical School, a 6 year program following high school. Pooja met her husband Vikram, who is from Chicago, during her last year of medical school while he was on a business trip to Auckland. They live downtown with their little Maltese, Avicii. Anthony Little was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, where he earned his BS in Biological Sciences and Chemistry and MS in healthcare Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. He attended medical school at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Anthony enjoys lifting weights, and spending time with his wife, Danielle, and his 8 month old son, Ty. Tyler Quest was born and raised in Wyoming and attended the University of Wyoming, later moving to Seattle for medical school at the University of Washington. He most enjoys spending time with family, his dogs, and his fiancé Jai, who is currently finishing her masters degree in International Security at the University of Denver. In October, the residents enjoyed their annual retreat where they participated in team building activities at the Iowa Challenge Course at the UI Recreational Fields (pictured above right).
