IBM Labeling Specification Version No. 5.6 November 14, 2013 Symbols and Special Labels Page 3 of 31 1.0 Introduction This document is volume 8 of the Global Labeling Guides. It gives an overview of special labels and markings that are applied for various purposes to packages of products. The term ‘overview’ is used, because the details mostly exist in other IBM specifications or on web sites. Those other documents can be found as per the table below. Users of this document are advised to obtain and understand those details before using any of the symbols referenced in this document. Before reading this volume 8 it is advised to first read volume 1 of the Global Labeling Guides. It contains background information that pertains to all of the volumes of the Global Labeling Guides series. Whenever handling symbols are required, use only those symbols provided in ISO-780 or ASTM D5445. Any new symbols should follow the design guidelines of those standards. If what you're trying to convey is not covered by either of those standards, then consult section 5.0 for symbols which have been custom created by IBM. To comply with Chinese law, international symbols must be used. Reference ISO 780. Except as noted, the items listed below may be applied to the package as a label or as printed icons directly on the package. The method of application is left largely to each shipper to determine the best method unless otherwise specified below. The preference is for the markings to be of maximum contrast such as black on kraft background (and not IBM Blue on kraft background for instance). These should be used on packages which are top heavy. Four are used - one on each vertical side to indicate the location of the center of gravity of the package. Where details can be found This is an ISO-780 and ASTM D5445 symbol. This symbol is required for large crates regardless of height as well as top heavy items such as those for which tilt indicators are applied. If the precise location of the center of gravity for a given item depending on configuration varies, it is permissible to put it as close as possible so that it still conveys the important “off center” or “top heavy” message.
