LITURGICAL RECEPTION AND SOLEMN MASS OF INSTALLATION
FRANCIS, BISHOP, SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD
To our Venerable Brother, Anthony Colin Fisher, of the Order
of Preachers, till now Bishop of Parramatta, and transferred to
the metropolitan See of Sydney: greetings and our Apostolic
Benediction.
Since our Venerable Brother, George Pell, Cardinal of the
Holy Roman Church, was appointed Prefect of the Secretariat
for Economic Affairs, the distinguished metropolitan Church
of Sydney in our beloved Australia has been vacant. Since
we, like Blessed Peter, have been given the most onerous care
for the entire flock of the Lord, it is fitting at this time that
we appoint a suitable Pastor for that diocese. Having heard
the Congregation for Bishops, we judge that you, Venerable
Brother, learned in sacred things, who formerly among other
duties skilfully and zealously performed your functions as
an Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney, are endowed with the due
qualities and are worthy to govern it.
Finally, beloved son, we pray that, assisted by the gifts of the
Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, you will fulfil your office as Pastor
so that the faithful entrusted to you – especially the young,
who are the hope of the Church – nourish daily their lamps
of faith, hope and, above all, charity, the queen of all the
virtues, at the fount of life who is Christ.
May His peace be ever with you and with the ecclesial community of Sydney which, under the patronage of our most
loving Mother, the Virgin Mary, is indeed most dear to Us.
Given at Rome, at Saint Peter’s, on the eighteenth day of
the month of September, in the year of the Lord 2014, the
second of Our Pontificate.
Francis
Therefore, by Our Apostolic authority, we release you from
your bonds to the Diocese of Parramatta and name you
Metropolitan Archbishop of Sydney with all the rights and
obligations of that office. We mandate further that you
inform your clergy and people of this Letter and we exhort
them to accept you joyfully and to remain united with you.

LITURGICAL RECEPTION AND SOLEMN MASS OF INSTALLATION
THE ARCHBISHOP’S COAT OF ARMS AND MOTTO
A
rchbishop Anthony’s coat of arms contains three
principal sections. The shield superimposed in front
(an inescutcheon) bears the arms of the Archdiocese of
Sydney. The four eight-pointed red stars (gules) on a silverwhite cross represent the constellation of the Southern
Cross and derive from the badge of the then colony and
now State of New South Wales. These arms were used by
the first Archbishops of Sydney to indicate that the Church
and nation exist under this celestial symbol of Christ. The
azure blue field represents Our Lady who, under the title of
Help of Christians, is Patron of St Mary’s Cathedral, of the
Archdiocese of Sydney and of Australia.
Behind the shield is a processional cross that signifies the
authority of an Archbishop. The Archbishop of Sydney is
the Metropolitan of the ecclesiastical Province of Sydney
which includes all of the dioceses of New South Wales.
Surmounting the arms is the Roman hat (galero) in green
which is the traditional colour of Bishops with the twenty
tassels (fiocchi) proper to an Archbishop. On the viewer’s right (heraldic sinister) of the main shield are
the Archbishop’s personal arms of a gold fish or dolphin on
an azure blue field, taken from the arms of St John Fisher,
the great English scholar, bishop and martyr, and recalling
that the apostles and their successors are called by Christ
to be ‘fishers of men’. The fish is also an ancient symbol of
Christ and may be seen as rising out of the waters of baptism
and of death to new life. Reigning above it is a crowned
monogram of Mary Queen of Heaven to whose protection
and intercession the Archbishop has entrusted himself and
his ministry.
In choosing this motto Archbishop Anthony echoes the
Dominican motto “Veritas” (Truth) and expresses the commitment of all Christians to speak honestly and compassionately to our world.
On the viewer’s left (heraldic dexter) is the Dominican
shield, indicating the bishop’s membership of the Order
of Friars Preachers - the black and white truth of Christ’s
Gospel flowers from the cross.
ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL WEDNESDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2014
The scroll records Archbishop Anthony’s personal motto
‘Veritatem facientes in caritate’ from St Paul’s Epistle to the
Ephesians (4:15) which is read at the Mass of Installation of
a Bishop and translates as “Speaking the truth in love” (RSV).
In heraldic terms, the arms may be blazoned:
The arms of the Order of Friars Preachers impaling Azure within
a bordure wavy the crowned monogram of Maria Regina in chief
and, in base, a dolphin embowed Or and on an inescutcheon, in
middle chief, the arms of the Archdiocese of Sydney Azure on the
arms of a Latin cross Argent four mullets of eight points Gules.

Catholic Communications)

INTERCESSIONS
Let us praise God the Father who chose Mary as the
mother of his Son and wanted all generations to call her
blessed. With confidence we pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
May the Virgin Mary intercede for us.
Father, you have looked on the Virgin Mary and made
her the mother of mercy; may those who are in danger
experience the depth of her love.
You called Mary to be the mother in the house of Jesus
and Joseph; through her prayers help all mothers to make
their homes places of love and holiness.

The Archbishop then moves in procession through the

the Blessed Sacrament. He then moves to the Chapel of
St Peter and vests for the celebration of Mass.
During the vesting, all are seated and the Choir sings:
Ecce sacerdos magnus qui in diebus suis placuit Deo, et

Prayer for the Archbishop
Meanwhile, James Edwards sings:
The Dean: Lord I Need You
All:
Almighty and eternal God, from the
highest heavens you sent your Son among
us to teach us and guide us: we earnestly
pray that this your servant, Anthony, to
whom you have given the fullness of the
priesthood, may grow in humility as he
approaches the chair of his office. Let him
come among us as one who serves, and
make his heart the throne of your Spirit.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Lord, I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You I fall apart
You’re the One that guides my heart
Lord, I need You, oh, I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defence, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You
Amen.
Installation
The Apostolic Nuncio escorts the Archbishop to the cathedra,

Recognition of the New Archbishop
Where sin runs deep Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are

Read by Sr Mary Rachel Capets OP
LESSED be the name of the Lord now and for evermore.
A reading from the book of the Apocalypse.
Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, adorned
with the sun, standing on the moon, and with the twelve
stars on her head for a crown. She was pregnant, and in
labour, crying aloud in the pangs of childbirth. Then a
second sign appeared in the sky, a huge red dragon which
had seven heads and ten horns, and each of the seven
heads crowned with a coronet. Its tail dragged a third of
the stars from the sky and dropped them to the earth,
and the dragon stopped in front of the woman as she was
having the child, so that he could eat it as soon as it was
born from its mother. The woman brought a male child
into the world, the son who was to rule all the nations
with an iron sceptre, and the child was taken straight up
to God and to his throne, while the woman escaped into
the desert, where God had made a place of safety ready.
Then I heard a voice shout from heaven, ‘Victory and
power and empire for ever have been won by our God,
and all authority for his Christ.’
Praise, O servants of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord!
May the name of the Lord be blessed
both now and for evermore!
From the rising of the sun to its setting
praised be the name of the Lord!
High above all nations is the Lord,
above the heavens his glory.
Who is like the Lord, our God,
who has risen on high to his throne
yet stoops from the heights to look down,
to look down upon heaven and earth?
From the dust he lifts up the lowly,
from his misery he raises the poor
to set him in the company of princes,
yes, with the princes of his people.
The word of the Lord.

The Gospel Acclamation
Read by Mr Michael Digges
All stand; the Choir sings:
A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Ephesians.
Alleluia. Felix es, sacra Virgo Maria, et omni laude dignissima:
quia ex te ortus est Sol Iustitiæ, Christus Deus noster.
I, therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life
worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with
all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one
another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in
the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as
you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call,
one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us
all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was
given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some
prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, for
the equipment of the saints, for the work of ministry, for
building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the
unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God,
to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the
fulness of Christ; so that we may no longer be children,
tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of
doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in
deceitful wiles. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to
grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.
The word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
Alleluia. Happy are you, holy Virgin Mary, and worthy of all
praise, for out of you has risen the Sun of Justice, Christ our God.
Gospel Reading
Luke 1:39-56
Deacon: The Lord be with you.
All:
And with your spirit.
Deacon:
A reading from the holy Gospel according
to Luke.
All:
Glory to you, O Lord.
Mary set out and went as quickly as she could to a town in
the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah’s house
and greeted Elizabeth. Now as soon as Elizabeth heard
Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth
was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and
said, ‘Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed
is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with
a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your
greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for
joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made
her by the Lord would be fulfilled.’
And Mary said: ‘My soul proclaims the greatness of the
Lord and my spirit exults in God my saviour; because he
has looked upon his lowly handmaid.

Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me
Blessed, for the Almighty has done great things to me.
Holy is his name, and his mercy reaches from age to age
for those who fear him.
He has shown the power of his arm, he has routed the
proud of heart, he has pulled down princes from their
thrones and exalted the lowly.
The hungry he has filled with good things, the rich sent
empty away.
He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful
of his mercy – according to the promise he made to
our ancestors – of his mercy to Abraham and to his
descendants for ever.’

6. For those who have gone before us in faith, especially
for Cardinal Edward Bede Clancy, the recently deceased
Emeritus Archbishop of Sydney, and his predecessors:
having loved and served God in this life may they share in
eternal life together with Our Lady and all the saints. Let
us pray to the Lord.

The Eucharistic Prayer
Preface
Blessed Virgin Mary II
It is truly right and just, our duty and our
salvation, to praise your mighty deeds
in the exaltation of all the Saints, and
especially, as we celebrate the memory of
the Blessed Virgin Mary, to proclaim your
kindness as we echo her thankful hymn
of praise. For truly even to earth’s ends
you have done great things and extended
your abundant mercy from age to age:
when you looked on the lowliness of your
handmaid, you gave us through her the
author of our salvation, your Son, Jesus
Christ, our Lord. Through him the host
of Angels adores your majesty and rejoices
in your presence for ever. May our voices,
we pray, join with theirs in one chorus of
exultant praise, as we acclaim:

Eucharistic Prayer I (The Roman Canon)
Archbishop:
To you, therefore, most merciful Father,
we make humble prayer and petition
through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord:
that you accept and bless X these
gifts, these offerings, these holy and
unblemished sacrifices, which we offer
you firstly for your holy catholic Church.
Be pleased to grant her peace, to guard,
unite and govern her throughout the whole
world, together with your servant Francis
our Pope, and me your unworthy servant,
and all those who, holding to the truth,
hand on the catholic and apostolic faith.
Concelebrant I: Commemoration of the Living.
Remember, Lord, your servants and all
gathered here, whose faith and devotion
are known to you.
For them, we offer you this sacrifice
of praise or they offer it for themselves
and all who are dear to them: for the
redemption of their souls, in hope of
health and well-being, and paying their
homage to you, the eternal God, living
and true.
Concelebrant II: Within the Action.
In communion with those whose
memory we venerate, especially the
glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of
our God and Lord, Jesus Christ, and
blessed Joseph, her Spouse, your blessed
Apostles and Martyrs, Peter and Paul,
Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James,
ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL WEDNESDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2014
Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon
and Jude; Linus, Cletus, Clement,
Sixtus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Lawrence,
Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas
and Damian and all your Saints; we ask
that through their merits and prayers, in
all things we may be defended by your
protecting help.
Archbishop:
Therefore, Lord, we pray:
graciously accept this oblation
of our service,
that of your whole family;
order our days in your peace,
and command that we be delivered
from eternal damnation
and counted among the flock
of those you have chosen.
Archbishop with Concelebrants:
Be pleased, O God, we pray, to bless,
acknowledge, and approve this offering
in every respect; make it spiritual and
acceptable, so that it may become for us
the Body and Blood of your most beloved
Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
On the day before he was to suffer, he
took bread in his holy and venerable
hands, and with eyes raised to heaven to
you, O God, his almighty Father, giving
you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the
bread and gave it to his disciples, saying:
27
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT,
FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
Archbishop with Concelebrants:
Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the
memorial of the blessed Passion, the
Resurrection from the dead, and the
glorious Ascension into heaven of Christ,
your Son, our Lord, we, your servants and
your holy people, offer to your glorious
majesty from the gifts that you have given
us, this pure victim, this holy victim, this
spotless victim, the holy Bread of eternal
life and the Chalice of everlasting salvation.
Be pleased to look upon these offerings with a
serene and kindly countenance, and to accept
them, as once you were pleased to accept the
gifts of your servant Abel the just, the sacrifice
of Abraham, our father in faith, and the
offering of your high priest Melchizedek, a
holy sacrifice, a spotless victim.
In humble prayer we ask you, almighty
God: command that these gifts be borne
by the hands of your holy Angel to your
altar on high in the sight of your divine
majesty, so that all of us, who through
this participation at the altar receive
the most holy Body and Blood of your
Son, may be filled with every grace and
heavenly blessing.
In a similar way, when supper was ended,
he took this precious chalice
in his holy and venerable hands,
and once more giving you thanks,
he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT,
FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW
AND ETERNAL COVENANT
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU
AND FOR MANY
FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

HYMN
Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ,
et concepit de Spiritu sancto.
Ave Maria, gratia plena: Dominus tecum: Benedicta tu in
mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.
Maria dixit: Ecce ancilla Domini,
fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum.
Et verbum caro factum est et habitavit in nobis.
Sancta Maria, mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus nunc
et in hora mortis nostræ. Amen.
The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary,
and she conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary, full of grace: the Lord is with thee:
Blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord,
be it done unto me according to thy word.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.
Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now
and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Franz Biebl (1906-2001)
King of kings, yet born of Mary,
As of old on earth he stood,
Lord of lords, in human vesture,
In the Body and the Blood:
He will give to all the faithful
His own Self for heavenly Food.
Rank on rank the host of heaven
Spreads its vanguard on the way,
As the Light of Light descendeth
From the realms of endless day,
That the powers of hell may vanish
As the darkness clears away.
At his feet the six-winged seraph;
Cherubim with sleepless eye,
Veil their faces to the Presence,
As with ceaseless voice they cry.
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Alleluia, Lord most high!

rchbishop Anthony Colin Joseph Fisher OP was born
at the Mater Hospital in Crows Nest in 1960 and
baptised at St Thérèse Church, Lakemba. He is the eldest
of Colin and Gloria Fisher’s five children.
His primary schools were St Thérèse Lakemba, St Michael’s
Lane Cove and Holy Cross College Ryde. He attended
secondary school at St Ignatius’ College Riverview, where he
was dux of the school and captain of debating. He studied
history and law at the University of Sydney before practising
law in a city firm.
In 1985 Archbishop Anthony entered the Order of Preachers
(Dominicans) and studied for the priesthood in Melbourne,
receiving an honours degree in Theology. He worked for a time
on immigration and refugee issues at Uniya, a Jesuit centre
for social research in Kings Cross, and was ordained a priest
at Holy Name Parish, Wahroonga, on 14 September 1991.
Following ordination Archbishop Anthony completed a
Doctorate in Bioethics at the University of Oxford, and
returned to Australia to lecture at the Australian Catholic
University from 1995-2000. During this time he was also
Master of Students (seminarians) in the Dominican Order
and Socius (deputy) to the Provincial. In 2000 he was

Bay. He was also Bishop Co-ordinator of World Youth Day
2008 in Sydney, the largest gathering in Australia’s history.
On 8 January 2010 Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop
Anthony the third Bishop of Parramatta. During his time in
Parramatta he worked extensively with school communities on
the mission and identity of Catholic schools today, and with
youth ministers and groups to connect young people with
the Church. He oversaw a significant increase in vocations
to the priesthood for Parramatta and built a new Seminary at
Harris Park. He oversaw the consultations and development
of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan, Faith in Our Future. He
also continued to serve as Chair of the Catholic Education
Commission of New South Wales, Member of the Australian
Bishops’ Commission for Doctrine and Morals, Member

the Pontifical Academy for Life, the body that advises the
Church on bioethics. In 2011 Archbishop Anthony received
an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Notre

THE HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE
OF ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL
S
t Mary’s Cathedral is the spiritual home of Sydney’s
Catholic community. It is the seat of the Archbishop of
Sydney, and stands on the site of the first Catholic Chapel
in Australia. Constructed in local sandstone, the “Gothic
Revival” style of its architecture is reminiscent of the great
medieval Cathedrals of Europe. St Mary’s is not only a great
legacy from the past, however: it is a vital part of the present
spiritual and cultural life of the city and the nation. The
Cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, under
the title of Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians.
William Wilkinson Wardell was commissioned by
Archbishop Polding to design a new St Mary’s following
the fire of 1865 which ruined the original Cathedral.
Wardell was born in 1823, and as an architect in England
had become an accomplished practitioner of the Gothic
Revival style championed by A.W.N. Pugin, and like Pugin,
Wardell became a convert to Catholicism.
He came to the Australian colonies in 1858, living in
Melbourne. Wardell designed several important buildings
in Melbourne, including St. Patrick’s Cathedral. In Sydney,
St. John’s College within the University of Sydney stands as
further testimony to his skill. Polding wrote to Wardell, “I
leave all to you and your own inspiration in the matter. I
will not even say that your conception shall be restricted to
the Gothic style of any particular period. Any plan, any style,
anything that is beautiful and grand, to the extent of our
power.” (letter of 10 October, 1865).
ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL WEDNESDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2014
Constructed of dressed Sydney sandstone, St Mary’s
stretches some 106 m in length, and the central tower rises
to 46 m. When the intended spires were built in 2000, the
Cathedral soared to 75 m.
St Mary’s is designed principally in the Geometric
Decorated style of Gothic which first evolved around the
13th century. It is not a copy of a particular medieval
Cathedral, but is a unique design, drawing on certain
elements of its medieval forbears. In keeping with many
medieval English Cathedrals, there is a strong emphasis on
the length-wise dimension of the building, while viewed
from the side it is more reminiscent of a typically French
Cathedral. Viewed from the front facade, it is also like a
French Cathedral, with twin towers flanking a rose window.
A visitor to St Mary’s will see many features on the outside
of the building: the flying buttresses of the chancel and
nave; the canopies and statues in the northern gable; the
text of the Ave Maria and other invocations carved high
up on the walls; the many carved saintly heads which gaze
benignly down, and, way up on the towers and turrets, the
more menacing figures of the gargoyles.
Moving inside the church through the main doors, the
eye is drawn forward, along the length of the nave, toward
the white pinnacles of the High Altar Screen, and the rich
colours of the Great North Window beyond.
Located beneath the nave, the crypt, last resting-place of the
deceased Archbishops of Sydney, is notable for the beautiful
terrazzo mosaic floor, depicting the story of the Creation,
and symbolic titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

NOTE OF THANKS
T
hank you for being with me and for praying for me
tonight. I am deeply grateful for the many messages
of prayers and congratulations I have received, and I ask
you to keep me in your prayers as my new ministry begins.
I have many people to thank, first of all my parents
and family who handed on to me and nurtured in me
the gift of faith. I thank His Holiness, Pope Francis,
for the confidence he has placed in me in making this
appointment and his words of blessing tonight. I also
thank the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Paul Gallagher,
Cardinal Edward Cassidy, Archbishop Denis Hart,
President of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference,
and so many bishops and clergy from around Australia,
for their supportive presence. I offer my heartfelt thanks
to the priests and people of the Archdiocese of Sydney for
welcoming me as a brother.
I thank my Dominican family, including the Provincial
Fr Kevin Saunders OP, Bishop Bernard O’Grady OP
and many friars and sisters, as well as leaders and
representatives of other religious congregations. I am
particularly grateful to the priests and people of the
Diocese of Parramatta, who have been my constant
companions in God’s service for nearly five years and have
taught me so much.
Thank you to all those who made tonight such a beautiful
act of worship: the Dean, Fr Paul Hilder, the Masters
of Ceremonies, concelebrating priests, deacons and
servers. Thank you to the organising committee, ushers,
communications team and many others who have brought
us all together tonight. My special thanks to Thomas
Wilson, our Director of Music and to St Mary’s Cathedral
Choir and others for the music which raised our spirits
to God.
I am honoured by the presence of many civic and religious
leaders; thank you for being with me. And I thank everyone
who has joined in this celebration, here in the cathedral, in
the crypt or forecourt, or more remotely through the media.
