INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT CALCUTTA INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KANPUR INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY MADRAS ADMISSION BROCHURE: Post Graduate Program for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing Session: 2016-2017 Background of the Project Despite its rapid overall economic growth and the development of the service sector, exemplified by the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector, inclusive growth remains a big challenge for India. Recognizing the crucial roles that the manufacturing sector plays in creating employment, Indian government established the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) in 2004 in order for this sector to enhance its development and contribute more dynamically to the global market. In 2006, an initial effort was made by NMCC to develop a programme to nurture “Visionary Leaders” capable of Breakthrough Thinking and envisioning future concepts, trends and businesses, thereby transforming the Indian manufacturing industry. Following the above initiative, “Visionary Leaders for Manufacturing (VLFM)” Programme has been developed by NMCC in collaboration with Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), two Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), an Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as a flagship programme to develop leaders in manufacturing, under the Joint Statement towards Japan-India Strategic and Global Partnership (also known as the Indo-Japan Cooperation Agreement 2006), signed by Honorable Dr. Man Mohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, and His Excellency Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, in December 2006. Based on the Joint Statement, the government of India requested a technical assistance to the government of Japan to provide them with necessary advice for smooth launching of the programme. In response to the request, JICA implemented a technical cooperation Project (the VLFM Project) from August 2007 to March 2013. LAKEVIEW HOSTEL, IIMC Following the satisfactory achievements of the above-mentioned project through the activities of the VLFM, the Government of Japan adopted the execution of a three-year Project on Champions for Societal Manufacturing (CSM) starting from April 2013. Building on the achievement of the VLFM, the CSM Project aims to further enhance the framework to strengthen and scale up the VLFM Programme in order to promote competitiveness and social contribution of the Indian manufacturing enterprises. 1 Major Attributes of VLM Program Joint Program of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC), Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) and Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM).
