CHAIR’S MESSAGE It is again my great pleasure, honour and privilege to contribute to this year’s annual report and write about some of the many achievements our “young” 10-year old organisation has added to its records. StarJam finally expanded into Christchurch after an understandable and practical delay due to the 2011 earthquakes; we officially launched StarJam in Christchurch in August 2012, which was really well received by the local community, families and press. The significance of this opening is that StarJam now truly can call itself a nationwide organisation; we are running weekly workshops and regular performances in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch, through which our kids gain self-belief, empowerment, new friends, new hope and new purpose. Despite, or maybe because of, our presence in the main centres throughout New Zealand, our waiting lists keep growing! On a sad note, most of you know how the idea for StarJam was formed after Julie’s brother Ross gave her away at her wedding to Roy Bartlett. Unfortunately Ross passed away during the year and we all dearly miss him. Hopefully you have seen our very successful Flash Mob video from Sylvia Park with approximately 100 Jammers performing “Born This Way”. This event was filmed by no less than 14 cameramen who donated their time and the video went viral with more than 71,000 views – and counting! To celebrate our 10th anniversary we held a very successful LiveJam in November, with 220 Jammers performing simultaneously in both Auckland and Wellington. In the meantime Julie Bartlett, our founder and CEO, won the “Next Women of the Year” Awards, and both Roy and Julie became semi-finalists in the “NZ of the Year” Awards! Leading up to this year the Board of Trustees had developed and started a process of finding a replacement for Julie, who had indicated in 2010 that she wanted to retire once StarJam had reached its 10th anniversary. One of our major focuses for the new financial year is to find and appoint the right successor. Last year we launched the StarJam Future Foundation (SFF) with the objective to provide a more financially sustainable organisation that no longer would have to rely solely on grants and donations. After having held a number of SFF events during the year we have secured a financial base. We need your help however to grow this even more, by making a financial commitment to the StarJam Future Foundation. One of the highlights attending the regular Board of Trustees meetings is reading about the amazing comments captured by Tutors / Volunteers / Jammers / Families indicating that they can never get enough of StarJam… Throughout this report you will see a number of these and hopefully you cannot get enough either! Andrew Seerden Chairperson –1– HIGHLIGHTS OF 2012/2013 StarJam Flash Mob at Sylvia Park On Saturday 9th June ninety-three Jammers surprised thousands of shoppers at Auckland’s Sylvia Shopping Mall by performing to Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way”. The youngsters perfected their dance routines by watching the choreography on a YouTube video which was created by the StarJam team. They performed after only one rehearsal which was staged in the early hours of Saturday before the shopping mall opened. The event was filmed by 14 cameramen who all donated their time. The video of the Flash Mob posted on YouTube has been viewed over 71,000 times. StarJam Launches in Christchurch Although the funding we received to start our programmes in Christchurch did not meet our budget, we decided to forge ahead as it became apparent the need for StarJam’s programmes was significant. We also believed that once our programmes started there would be a better chance of attracting local funding. Although there have been challenges in finding venues and securing funding, StarJam’s first eight months in Christchurch has been very successful. The StarJam Team from Auckland and Wellington welcomed the new Jammers in Christchurch On Saturday, 4th August 2012, at The Court Theatre, StarJam was launched in Christchurch. After months of planning and recruiting our Regional Programmes Co-coordinator, tutors and volunteers we were able to welcome the eager Jammers who had been waiting for this moment for so long. The very successful launch event attended by about 150 guests including local dignitaries was hosted by legendary singer and StarJam JamBassador Ray Woolf. The crowd enjoyed a programme of entertainment and hospitality. Amongst those who travelled to Christchurch to welcome all the new StarJam children in Christchurch were “Jammers” from both Wellington and Auckland, some who flew for the first time. Our Regional Programmes Coordinator in Christchurch, Lauren Merritt, provided leadership for the StarJam community in Christchurch. Despite the continued earthquake activity in and around the city it became apparent that the need for our programmes was greater than ever. All the feedback we have received suggests that more StarJam programmes are required. Meeting Coldplay One of the highlights of the year for 60 Jammers was the opportunity to ‘jam’ with two members of the world famous band Coldplay. In a special ‘jam’ in Auckland when the band was in the country for 24 hours to perform one concert on 10th November 2012 Chris Martin and Will Champion gave an hour to give the jammers the jam of their life at the Auckland Museum Events Centre. The 60 jammers came from near and far, around 30 from Auckland, 14 from Hamilton and 8 each from Wellington and Christchurch. Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin enjoying ‘jamming’ with the Jammers –2– LiveJam Thousands of New Zealanders were part of LiveJam, a performance showcase which linked over 200 Jammers across four cities via a live internet stream and video conferencing. LiveJam a first of its kind event was held to mark StarJam’s 10th birthday. The heart-warming two-hour show was hosted by JamBassador Simon Dallow and TVNZ reporter Matt McLean with special guest performances by Ray Woolf, Adeaze, Shane Cortese, Megan Alatini and Ben Lummis. Dame Susan Devoy, Silver Fern Irene Van Dyk and London 2012 Paralympics Gold medalist Mary Fisher also took to the stage during the inspirational event. Held at the Auckland Museum Events Centre and the Wellington Town Hall, with satellite party areas run from JamZones for communities in Christchurch and Hamilton, LiveJam was a large-scale showcase of song, dance and instrumental performances. It took a look back at 10 years of StarJam, which has seen more than 1000 young Kiwis with disabilities go through its performance workshop programmes. Jammers and volunteers form close bonds Megan Alatini and Jammers performing at Wellington Town Hall All the Jammers knew the dance moves well Wellington tutor Renee Maurice with MC Matt McLean “Everything was fantastic. I had an amazing time, so thank you for letting me be a part of it. The Jammers changed me and my perception on so many things. Really put things into perspective.” Matt McLean (Wellington LiveJam MCs) –3– Annual Summit 2012 The 2012 StarJam Annual Summit on 3rd July brought together more than 80 key members of the StarJam community made up of tutors, volunteers and staff from across the country. It was a day of celebration and appreciation of everything StarJam filled with discussions, workshops, games and performances. StarJam tutors and volunteers “I loved how everyone was given the opportunity to be who they are and have fun in their own way, and also show their talents without being judged in any way – Loved It!!” Jenny (on the 2012 Annual Summit day for tutors and volunteers) NEXT Woman of the Year On 10th October 2012 StarJam CEO Julie Bartlett was announced NEXT Woman of the Year 2012. NEXT editor Sarah Henry said, “Julie epitomises what we are looking for in our Woman of the Year, she is a true inspiration who has made an outstanding contribution to New Zealand through her dedication, drive and determination to succeed.” New Zealander of the Year Awards Recognition Again We were delighted to have received recognition in the New Zealander of the Year Awards for four years running since they started in 2009. In 2012 both Julie and Roy Bartlett were semi-finalists in the Senior Category. So Many Jams There were too many events, gigs and special occasions to include in this report. An example was a mini jam where Jammer Brooke Pautu escorted by her mother, Helen Pautu and StarJam CEO, Julie Bartlett got to spend time chatting with Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives fame at the Langham Hotel on 3rd October 2012. Jammer Brooke Pautu (and entourage) with Eva Longoria –4– TALENT EXPANSION PROGRAMME With the launch of StarJam in Christchurch in August 2012 the number of weekly performance workshop programmes across the country increased from 26 to 30. The expansion into Christchurch has seen the number of Jammers attending the performance workshops on a weekly basis grow to 300. Demand for places in the performance workshops continues to grow along with the waiting lists. Little did we know how hungry people would be for the inspirational performances that StarJam started to introduce. We also had no idea that being in StarJam would have such a transformational effect on the Jammers, the young people who became the central focus of the StarJam community. StarJam’s tenth year was action-packed as usual. It’s easy to remember the high profile events especially when TV and other cameras are there to capture the highlights. Some of the most profound moments however are never captured on film, like the moments when mothers see their child doing something they never previously thought possible or when a Jammer receives positive feedback from one of his peers and visibly grows in stature instantaneously. Setting up StarJam in Christchurch was one of the most challenging and rewarding projects during the year. There was a plethora of uncertainties before and during the set-up phase. After meeting some of the families who had been waiting for StarJam for a long time and hearing their stories, all the challenges dissolved into insignificance. The launch event we staged at the temporary Court Theatre in Addington on 3rd August was a joy-filled moment in time. At last those who had been waiting got their first StarJam experience. 150 people got “jammed” that afternoon. Four performance programmes got underway the following week. Jammers quickly got into the swing of performing and within a remarkably short time were stage-ready. They wouldn’t have anticipated that within two months of joining StarJam some would be Jamming with members of one of the world’s top bands, Coldplay. They flew to Auckland joining Jammers from Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland to spend one unforgettable hour with Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Will Champion during the one day Coldplay was in New Zealand on 10th October. The level of excitement at the Auckland Museum Events Centre could have lifted the roof. Those who were there will possibly ‘dine out’ on this experience for the rest of their lives. The “Born This Way” flash mob we staged at Auckland shopping mall Sylvia Park was viewed online by more than 71,000 people. Judging from comments left on our YouTube channel, it was advisable to have tissues on hand when viewing this 6 minute video. It was great to learn that people could get such a strong ‘jammed’ experience from seeing Jammers in action online, seemingly similar to the “jammed’ experience of audiences in lives shows. Our tutors and volunteers are at the frontline providing exceptional coaching for our Jammers in the Talent Expansion Programme. Representing the 30 weekly programmes, more than 80 attended the annual Summit in Auckland; a day of celebration and training. To see the dedication of these key members of the StarJam community continues to be awe-inspiring. We came to hear about one volunteer who this year chose a different university course so as not to clash with her StarJam involvement. LiveJam, the official tenth anniversary celebration saw several new records chalked up. In order to be able to invite every Jammer from each of the four cities, we staged a simultaneous show held at two venues linked by video conferencing. Highlights from this ‘first-ever’ event could fill volumes however it seems that it was especially potent for the Jammers to be able to see each other on screen all performing the same songs at the same time; Jammers from Christchurch and Wellington performing at the Wellington Town Hall and Jammers from Hamilton and Auckland performing at the Auckland Museum Events Centre. The next decade will undoubtedly be even more exciting. Naturally we hope the excitement translates into further changes in the way people view and treat young people with disabilities. I will be stepping aside from my role as CEO in 2013. The strength of the StarJam community has reached a level whereby I believe the time is perfect for a new leader to take the helm. I am looking forward to having more time to spend with my family and friends although I will never forget the hundreds of StarJam families who have enriched my life forever. I send sincere thanks to everyone who has played a part in all the successes of the past year, and decade. Julie Bartlett MNZM CEO and Founder –6– TREASURER’S REPORT The 2012-13 financial year has been a difficult operational year. The operational aspects (excludes StarJam Future Foundation (SFF) of StarJam made a loss of $164k while the overall loss (includes SFF) was $42k. Despite revenues from grants increasing by 10% over 2012-13, they were significantly down on budget levels. A change in the dates of allocating monies by a couple of our usual funding lines saw some monies that were forecast to be received in the 2012-13 financial year, not being received until the 2013-14 financial year. This resulted in extreme pressure being applied to cashflow in the later months of the year. Some pressure was removed with the receipt of some unexpected grant monies and a fundraising campaign generated within StarJam. During the financial year new monies of $117k were received for the SFF which overall now has a balance of $161k. Expenses increased during the year by $145k with the main contributing factors being $87k associated with the increased TEP programme costs which included the setup and go-live of the Christchurch StarPod, and increased wages due to the equivalent of an additional staff member at Head Office over the year associated with CEO assistance and Bequest and Fundraising aspects of StarJam. Due to the lower than budget grant revenues, the amount spent on further branding of StarJam and other expenses resulted in total expenses being 23% lower than budget. It continues to be difficult to budget with any high degree of surety the timing and where revenue streams will be generated however, based on current information and some new fundraising initiatives, the Trustees have approved what they consider to be a conservative operational budget (excludes SFF) for 2013-14 which projects a loss of $25k with a positive cashflow movement of $12k. Revenues are budgeted to increase by 15% to $814k whilst expenses are 5% lower at $815k cash plus depreciation of $25k. Capital expenditure during the year will be minimal at $4k. The year commences with operational cash of $137k of which $55k is specified grants rolled over from 2012-13.
