Aurora District Merit Badge Fair

LDS Shoreline Stake
For all merit badges remember to bring a Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster. You may wish to bring a
pen or pencil and some paper for note taking. Worksheets for most badges are available at
meritbadge.org. Feel free to print a worksheet and bring it with you for your convenience. A snack break
will occur between 10:50 and 11:10 am. Scouts are encouraged to bring a snack for themselves. No
snack will be provided for the scouts. The following requirements are meant to be completed in advance
or may not be covered in class. If unable to complete the material in advance scouts will need to follow up
with their counselor to show proof of completion before any badge is awarded.
Camping
Bring a Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster. Bring a filled out worksheet found at the following link:

tent to perform last of requirement), 5A, 7A, 8C, 8D, and all of requirement 9 (bring signed note from your
Scoutmaster or Outdoor Coordinator that verifies you have completed 9A. It is OK to not have this portion
complete by the Course start, but be prepared to discuss your plan to complete.). Present yourself as
described in requirements 5E and 7B or be prepared to follow-up with the counselor about those
requirements. To be successful in this course, it is very important to have all items listed completed
before you arrive.
Citizenship in the Nation
Bring a Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster. If possible, please bring the following requirements
completed or on paper:
2 (visits to historical/important places);
3 (current events five days previous to, bring info for discuss);
6 (An important speech researched for discussion);
8 (A letter written to one of our senators).
Communications
Bring Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster. This merit badge will take the full 4 hours. Will only be a
partial. Be prepared to give two speeches, requirements 2 & 4. We will work on requirements 1 & 3 also.
Requirements 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are homework or to be done after this meeting. Follow up with the
counselor to complete the merit badge. Requirements that will not be completed in class include 5, 6, 7,
8, and 9. If you have proof of doing a campfire or court of honor, I will sign off if provided a signature on
your plan by an adult leader from your troop. Feel free to bring proof of other requirements and they will
be signed off.
Digital Technology
Bring Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster.
1.
Show your counselor your current, up-to-date Cyber Chip.

Do the following:
b.
Using an Internet search engine (with your parent's permission), find ideas about how to conduct a
troop court of honor or campfire program. Print out a copy of the ideas from at least three different
websites. Share what you found with your counselor, and explain how you used the search engine to find
this information.
c.
Use a Web browser to connect to an HTTPS (secure) website (with your parent's permission).
Explain to your counselor how to tell whether the site's security certificate can be trusted, and what it
means to use this kind of connection.
6.
Do THREE of the following. For each project you complete, copy the files to a backup device and
share the finished projects with your counselor.
a.
Using a spreadsheet or database program, develop a food budget for a patrol weekend campout
OR create a troop roster that includes the name, rank, patrol, and telephone number of each Scout. Show
your counselor that you can sort the roster by each of the following categories: rank, patrol, and
alphabetically by name.
b.
Using a word processor, write a draft letter to the parents of your troop's Scouts, inviting them to a
troop event.
c.
Using a graphics program, design and draw a campsite plan for your troop OR create a flier for an
upcoming troop event, incorporating text and some type of visual such as a photograph or an illustration.
d.
Using a presentation software program, develop a report about a topic approved by your counselor.
For your presentation, create at least five slides, with each one incorporating text and some type of visual
such as a photograph or an illustration.
e.
Using a digital device, take a picture of a troop activity. Send or transfer this image to a device
where the picture can be shared with your counselor.
f.
Make a digital recording of your voice, transfer the file to a different device, and have your
counselor play back the recording.
g.
Create a blog and use it as an online journal of your Scouting activities, including group discussions
and meetings, campouts, and other events. Include at least five entries and two photographs or
illustrations. Share your blog with your counselor. You need not post the blog to the Internet; however, if
you choose to go live with your blog, you must first share it with your parents AND counselor AND get
their approval.
h.
Create a Web page for your troop, patrol, school, or place of worship. Include at least three articles
and two photographs or illustrations. Include at least one link to a website of interest to your audience.

Dog Care
Bring Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster. Bring a 2 month log of care or start of a log of care. Visit a
Veterinarian.
Electricity
Bring Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster.

Complete an electrical home safety inspection of your home, using the checklist found in the
Electricity merit badge pamphlet or one approved by your counselor. Discuss what you find with your
counselor.
8.
Make a floor plan wiring diagram of the lights, switches, and outlets for a room in your home. Show
which fuse or circuit breaker protects each one.
9.
Do the following:
a.
Read an electric meter and, using your family's electric bill, determine the energy cost from the
meter readings.
Family Life
Bring a printout of the workbook: http://www.usscouts.org/usscouts/mb/worksheets/Family-Life.pdf, pen,
Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster, and read all of the requirements before coming to class. Check in
with counselor during the session for any follow up requirements.
Music
Bring Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster. Bring your instrument if you have one, but not necessary.
Requirement 3 will be covered in class but not completed.
Oceanography
Bring Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster. Read the Merit Badge pamphlet.
Sailing MB SHORE SCHOOL
The course will not be merit badge class. The class will teach the land based requirements for the Small
Boat Sailing merit badge. There will be an opportunity to sign up for additional courses with the instructor
to be sailing on the water. No blue card needed. NOT A MERIT BADGE CLASS
Textile
Bring Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster. Bring a 100% cotton t-shirt. The shirt will be died and
scouts will want to printout and bring a workbook that can be found at the following link:

Weather
Bring Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster. Read the Merit Badge pamphlet.
