It speaks to intellectual curiosity and lifelong learning . . .” LINK has now become family to Adams and her daughters; a family and community all speaking the same language of exceptional expectations. And her children —LINK Alumni Rhema and Alana and current LINK scholar Alexis—are clearly rising to those expectations. gateway to reaching potential and exceeding expectations. Our scholars, as you will read in this report, are held to high standards by their families, their mentors, the entire LINK team and ultimately, themselves. LINK scholars achieve academic success in high school and are equipped with tools needed to gain acceptance and financial support needed to attend selective colleges and universities. LINK alumni continue to strive for excellence and are leaders on campuses across the country. The LINK network remains vital after graduation, helping first time internships turn into flourishing careers. Our scholars have international experiences and are prepared to compete and succeed in the global market. LINK alumni demonstrate time and time again that they are making a difference and giving back. They serve on our Board of Directors, Associate Board and are engaged mentors and donors – a reflection of the organization’s enduring impact. We are poised to celebrate a half century of accomplishment with our 50th Anniversary in 2016, and look forward to serving more scholars and developing a growing Marjorie Adams LINK Parent “The idea that people are willing to invest in you is powerful. It was positive peer pressure,” said Rhema. A self-described “shy kid,” Akinbiyi more than blossomed during his LINK years at Gordon Tech High School and under the tutelage of mentor Steve Gavin, a current LINK Emeritus Director and mentor for more than 20 years. “The first time we met I think I said about one sentence,” recalled Akinbiyi. “Through the years we grew close, Steve is an amazing person and a great role model.” A very successful student athlete, Akinbiyi played football and ran track in high school, and he also made honor roll every semester. He went on to run track at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign where he was a communications major and business minor. He earned a summer internship with the Attorney Resources and Recruitment Department of Winston & Strawn, LLP upon graduation, an opportunity his mentor helped provide. Akinbiyi plans to go to graduate school and earn an MBA after working a couple of years, with an eye toward a long-term goal of someday serving as a Chief Human Resources Officer. “Steve and LINK helped give me the drive to accomplish more.” A global perspective LINK opens so many doors for its scholars, and some of them lead to far-reaching travels and life-changing experiences. Our long-standing partnerships with American Field Services (AFS) Intercultural Programs, Oak Park River Forest Community Foundation, and Emeritus Board member, Arthur Massolo, help make these opportunities available for a growing number of LINK scholars. “LINK encourages you to study abroad, to physically explore the world and leave your comfort zone,” said Princeton University Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs Senior Tomi Johnson, whose LINK high school experience included attending the University of Chicago Laboratory School and studying abroad in Madrid, Spain. Johnson has now traveled, studied and worked in France, Spain and England and will be heading to Belgium soon, all fueling her passion for international relations and her goal to earn a law degree and pursue international law. 6 LINK Unlimited Scholars 2015 Annual Report Marian Catholic High School Senior Kyle Walker said his study abroad in China was one of the best experiences of his life. “It taught me to be resilient and ready to adapt to new situations,” he said. LINK is committed to strengthening scholars by providing access and exposure to opportunities, helping them to become more competitive, courageous, and confident! A culture of mentoring Mentoring has been described as the “secret sauce” at LINK Unlimited Scholars, an element that brings a myriad of resources—both tangible and intangible—to our scholars. Baker & McKenzie, LLP, a Chicago-based international law firm, has played a major role in promoting mentorship at LINK and has been involved with the organization since its inception. “LINK has always been an important part of our civic presence and we encourage participation,” said North American Managing Partner Phil Suse, former Board Chair and current member of LINK’s Board of Directors. “It provides a real tangible benefit for the firm and it has reinforced our commitment to diversity.” Suse and his wife, Kerry, have served as mentors to four LINK scholars and have involved their own four children in the process. “It’s all about relationships and bridging cultural gaps,” said Suse. “We have life-long relationships that have evolved from our role as mentors. It’s been very rewarding for us as individuals and as a family.” Tomi Johnson Princeton University, Senior “LINK encourages you to study abroad, to physically explore the world and leave your comfort zone.” Coming full circle LINK alumna and marketing professional, Shevaz Freeman, has come full circle having served on the LINK Associate Board and now as a very active mentor. “When I think back to LINK, I realize it helped give me direction. It puts you together with other scholars who want more and want to do more. It sets high standards, but it definitely shows you that you can achieve your dreams and that hard work pays off,” said Freeman. Today, she feels strongly about giving back and hopes more young black professionals will follow suit. “LINK added so much to my education and exposure to different programs. I always wanted to give back to LINK, and being a mentor has been a very good experience, she said.” Now Freeman works to be that added support for her student, Michaela Foreman, a current senior at Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School. “Michaela’s like family now, and I definitely feel like I am doing something worthwhile,” said Freeman. Phil Suse (left) Baker & McKenzie, North American Managing Partner and LINK Board Member “LINK has always been an important part of our civic presence and we encourage particiaption.” Christian Johns St. Ignatius College Prep, Senior “I’ve been blessed with so many opportunities through LINK, like my AFS experience in France. Interacting with students from other countries was amazing and I really learned to just immerse myself in new experiences, being present in the moment and making the most of everything that comes my way.” Fuad Akinbiyl LINK Class of 2011, Attorney Recruitment Assistant at Winston & Strawn, LLP “LINK opens doors to new things and new people. My plan is most definitely to one day be in a financial position to give back to LINK.” Shevaz Freeman LINK Alumna and Mentor “I want to continue to be a part of LINK in some capacity. In her first year as head of the organization, Dr. Roz has lead efforts to strengthen the LINK Model. “As we approach 50 years of excellence, we are committed to developing strategies that will soon be implemented to expand and maximize LINK’s reach and deepen our impact well beyond our scholars’ high school years,” said Dr. Roz. “LINK did an amazing job of High school success, exposing me to so many situations. I came out with a better college access, and college understanding of myself and the success are components of the world around me. High school graduation and college enrollment is the expectation of LINK scholars from their very first day of high school. LINK provides opportunities for them to participate in ACT Prep classes, college visits, and college conferences, and actively works with scholars (and their parents) to ensure they earn good grades. College success extends beyond ensuring that scholars have the tools and skills to do well in college. LINK guides scholars through a methodical system for college selection that involves working with each scholar to determine the right school for them, building their confidence in their ability to attend the top schools, and assisting with the search for scholarships and financial aid. “The LINK Model builds both skills and confidence thorughout the high school years, ensuring that our scholars will thrive in college, and beyond!” said Dr. Roz. The LINK Model is driven by applied research and best practices in youth development and education. In addition to high school and college access and success, LINK’s summer learning and mentorship programs help create well-rounded scholars, prepared to take on their high school and college studies; and eventually, their careers. Summer Learning Program More than half of the achievement gap between lower and higher income youth can be attributed to unequal access to summer 8 LINK Unlimited Scholars 2015 Annual Report learning opportunities. As a result, low income youth are less likely to graduate from high school or enter college. LINK’s summer learning program is designed to close the gap and propel its scholars to success. Over a six-week period, scholars are engaged in academic coursework designed to prepare them for the next chapter in their academic journey. Rising freshmen participate in classes designed to help them sharpen their knowledge in math, literature, and study skills; sophomores study math and African-American literature and take part in a personal development course focused on self-reflection; juniors focus on ACT preparation and college exploration; and seniors take part in internships, college courses locally and at campuses across the country, as well as study and volunteer opportunities across the globe. The LINK summer learning program has witnessed incredible success in reducing the loss of academic skills during summer months and continues to improve to meet the evolving needs of scholars. a vital bridge to success “The mentor relationships are among the most important and inspiring elements of LINK. That we have hundreds of people committing not only their time, but their talents and treasures to support our scholars for four years is amazing,” said Dr. Roz. “To witness what mentors do for our scholars and the fact that so many of our mentors are high level executives who still make the time for our youth is truly remarkable.” LINK is one of only three Gold Star organizations recognized by Illinois Mentoring Partnership (IMP) for the mentorship program. This would not be possible without the many LINK mentors who have helped scholars grow academically and personally. LINK mentors are expected, at minimum, to communicate with scholars at least twice a month, to connect in person five times a year, and to participate in an annual training session. James Morgan is one of those remarkable influences—he has been involved as a mentor for 25 years. “LINK is not just a break for these kids, it’s a lightning bolt; it’s a miracle,” said Morgan who is the Executive Director of Genesys Works Chicago and a LINK Board Member. Morgan has sustained relationships with his mentees well beyond their high school and college years. “Working with these young kids, the world is their oyster, they just don’t know it. They have to do all the work and choose their own path, but LINK shines a bright light on that path.” Mentorship continues to be a valuable asset that strengthens the impact LINK has in the successful futures of our scholars. Guided Study LINK College Fair To supplement the academic support of our partnering high schools, LINK connects scholars to tutors, subject-specific enrichment classes, and test preparation workshops. LINK invites over 60 selective colleges and universities from across the country each year for junior and senior scholars and their parents to engage with college representatives. Scholar/Parent/Mentor Meetings Freshmen Initiation Ceremony Divided by class, these meetings provide an opportunity for scholars, parents, and mentors alike to celebrate successes, discuss areas of growth, and provide best practices to achieve a better mentor-mentee relationship. Class Retreat Each year, LINK invites scholars to an overnight retreat for their respective class. These retreats allow each class the opportunity to fellowship among their LINK classmates and share in moments of reflection regarding personal experiences in high school. Scholars also explore their relationships, personal belief systems, and goals. AT&T Aspire Workshop In partnership with AT&T, scholars explore the process of decision making and explore career interests through a series of team projects and group learning aimed at helping them understand the effects of their decisions on their future, their families, and the world. This ceremony is LINK’s traditional induction ritual introducing freshmen scholars and family to their mentor. The evening includes dinner, icebreakers, and testimonies from experienced mentors who share their reflections on the LINK program. Senior Financial Aid Workshop I & II Hosted in the fall and spring, senior parents learn about the college financial aid process, including FAFSA and scholarship opportunities. Approximately 70% of seniors received adequate scholarships and other financial aid to cover the full cost of tuition. Teen Worship Service Connected to LINK’s traditional grounding in Christian principles, this spiritually-filled, themebased program led by the scholars invites families, mentors, and other LINK partners to share in the celebration of the many accomplishments and talents of our scholars. Summer Opportunities Workshop Class College Visits During the week of spring break, LINK takes scholars to visit various colleges and universities in neighboring states. Scholars receive admission and scholarship information, as well as take a campus tour. When possible, current LINK collegiate scholars lead panel discussions. Junior scholars and their families are invited to learn about summer learning opportunities, including study abroad, college immersion, and internships. More than 75% of scholars are placed in a summer learning opportunity the summer before their senior year. Senior Mentor Appreciation Citibank Collegiate Scholar Roundtable As a special ‘thanks’ to their mentors, the graduating senior scholars host a ceremony to express their gratitude for the four years of guidance, counsel, and encouragement. Serving as a homecoming, collegiate scholars from across the country come back home to LINK each year to reflect and share their experiences in college with current high school scholars. Annual Awards Banquet Sophomore Class Career Fair In collaboration with LAB (LINK’s Associate Board), LINK hosts a fair that allows the sophomore class an opportunity to learn about a variety of career options available to them through one-on-one conversation and small group presentations with professionals representing various fields. ACT Prep This six-week preparation course teaches junior class scholars content and test strategy for the ACT. Meeting twice a week during the spring, scholars have successfully averaged a twopoint increase on the exam. This end-of-the-year celebration highlights the achievements of LINK scholars and salutes the graduating senior class on a ‘job well done’. LINK also recognizes the support of its partners who invest their time and treasures in the LINK program. Summer Learning Program Each summer LINK hosts learning and immersion opportunities to minimize summer learning loss. From freshman to senior year, scholars are engaged in opportunities for additional study and learning; personal growth and development; and opportunities for global awareness and career development.
