The College of Engineering
Courses in engineering were among the first established at The University of Toledo, which was
founded in 1872 as The Toledo University of Arts and Trades. In fact, until 1904 the courses
offered in the University were mainly those, which would now be considered those of the first two
years in engineering. The College of Industrial Science was established in 1910 as the precursor of
the present College of Engineering. Thus, the fundamental engineering courses at The University
of Toledo have 130 years of history behind them.
The Toledo University of Arts and Trades was taken over by Toledo City Council in 1884 as a
municipal institution, with the City of Toledo as trustee of its assets. The first department was the
Manual Training School, modeled after the Polytechnic School at Washington University in St.
Louis. The school was successful, attracting national attention and soon outgrowing its quarters. It
received a new name in 1900, the Toledo Polytechnic School, with a stated purpose of combining
“academic education with systematic training in drawing, mechanic arts and domestic science.”
The College of Arts and Sciences was established in 1909, followed on September 2, 1910 by
the College of Industrial Science. The College offered a two-year curriculum. Arrangements had
been made for transfer of students to The Ohio State University or the University of Michigan
for the last two years, leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. Civil, electrical, mechanical
and metallurgical engineering were listed in the curriculum. The College of Industrial Science
was absorbed as a department of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1922. However, Michigan
and Ohio State continued to accept juniors from the programs in chemical, civil, electrical and
mechanical engineering.
In 1929, Delos M. Palmer was named coordinator of the programs, and led the creation of a
separate College of Engineering in 1931. He was named Dean following the graduation of the first
four-year class from the new college in 1933. That year also marked the arrival of Philip C. Nash as
University President. He possessed a professional engineering background and came to the city
from Antioch College where he was well acquainted with its engineering co-operative program. In
1934, President Nash attempted to start the Antioch Co-Op program in engineering, which was
ultimately discontinued as a result of the Great Depression.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT RECOGNITIONS
The University bestows colored cords to honor all baccalaureate and associate degree
candidates who qualify for graduation with distinction. Blue and gold twisted cords have been
awarded to baccalaureate students who maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at
least 3.9 for all college work, and who will be granted diplomas bearing the words Summa
cum Laude, the University’s highest of three special honors. Blue cords have been awarded
to baccalaureate students maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.6 for
all college work, and who will graduate Magna cum Laude, the University’s second highest
honor. Gold cords have been awarded to baccalaureate students maintaining a cumulative
grade-point average of at least 3.3 for all college work, and who will graduate cum Laude, the
University’s third highest honor.
The University Honors Program has presented its graduating baccalaureate candidates with
an engraved medallion, which hangs from a gold ribbon. The face of the gold-tone medallion
bears the University’s seal and the words, “Honors Program.” The back of the medallion
bears the honoree’s name and year of graduation. To qualify for graduation with Engineering
College Honors from the University Honors Program, students must maintain at least a 3.3
cumulative grade-point average, earn 33 credits through honors courses and complete a
thesis or research project.
The College of Engineering recognizes outstanding professional practice achievement
by presenting an engraved medallion hung from a blue and gold ribbon. Graduates who
have satisfactorily completed at least four semesters of registered professional practice
assignments as part of the co-operative education program are eligible for this recognition.
Other honorary organizations bestow their own recognition to graduates. One may note
stoles, insignia, keys and other emblems of honor and accomplishment among the graduates.
The criteria for these honors are established by the individual organizations.
The Engineers Council for Professional Development (a forerunner of the Accreditation Board for
Engineering and Technology, ABET) first accredited the curriculum in general engineering in 1942.
In 1950, the college was departmentalized, with five specialized degrees replacing the Bachelor
of Engineering: Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Civil
Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Engineering
Physics, and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. An Industrial Engineering option was
added in 1954, becoming the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1971. The Bachelor
of Engineering Technology was added in 1974. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science &
Engineering was introduced in 1978. The Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering was established
in 1997, followed by individual Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science programs in
Construction Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology and Mechanical
Engineering Technology in 1998 and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering
Technology in 1999. All current programs maintain ABET accreditation.
A mandatory cooperative education program was implemented for all Bachelor of Science
students in engineering programs starting in fall 1997, thus completing the vision of President
Nash. The program continues to thrive as The University of Toledo College of Engineering
graduates highly skilled individuals prepared for the challenges the future will bring.

Order of the Engineer — Significance and History
To witness the progress of young engineers is a gratifying and rewarding experience —
especially to the experienced professional — strong in pride of a profession recognized by
the public as contributing to the welfare of man.
Progression from the academic world to the world of engineering practice is a transition
from learning to a reality that requires a clear vision and understanding of what we
as engineers have done, and must continue to do, for humanity and the quality of life
everywhere. As engineers we also owe a debt to our profession.
Thomas Carlyle, the Scottish essayist, defined a society as the vital articulation of many
individuals into a new individual. Decades ago, our engineering counterparts in Canada
had this same feeling. They found a need for the introduction of a spirit of community and
cohesiveness among engineers. The Canadians believed that a good way to go about
achieving this would be to instill in engineers a consciousness of belonging to one another,
to themselves as individuals, and to those they serve.
The result of this need for community resulted in the Canadian “Ritual of the Calling of an
Engineer.” The words of the ritual were written by British author Rudyard Kipling. Kipling
had much depth of feeling for engineers, the builders of things intended to benefit mankind.
The ritual also includes the placing of a ring on the small finger of the working hand.
Order of the Engineer Obligation of an Engineer
I am an Engineer. In my profession I take deep pride. To it I owe solemn obligations.
Since the Stone Age, human progress has been spurred by the engineering genius.
Engineers have made usable nature’s vast resources of material and energy for mankind’s
benefit. Engineers have vitalized and turned to practical use the principles of science and
the means of technology. Were it not for this heritage of accumulated experience, my
efforts would be feeble.
As an Engineer, I pledge to practice integrity and fair dealing, tolerance and respect;
and to uphold devotion to the standards and the dignity of my profession, conscious
always that my skill carries with it the obligation to serve humanity by making the best use
of Earth’s precious wealth.
As an Engineer, in humility and with the need for Divine Guidance, I shall participate in
none but honest enterprises. When needed, my skill and knowledge shall be given
without reservation for the public good. In performance of duty and in fidelity to my
profession, I shall give the utmost.
*New members read aloud only the parts in bold type.
The ring is an excellent symbol of continuity and community. It is worn for all to see and,
in effect, says, “Here is an engineer possessed of a publicly avowed dedication to the
profession and those it serves.
Maxims similar to those of Kipling took hold in Ohio and correspondence began between
members of the Canadian Calling the then officers of the Ohio Society of Professional
Engineers — notably Lloyd Chacey, Homer T. Borton and Brooks Earnest — with a view
toward extending the Canadian ceremony to the United States. Due to the legal restrictions,
this was not possible. However, at the invitation of the Canadian wardens, Homer Borton
and Brooks Earnest received their first rings in Canada.
During 1966, a group of U.S. engineers began to pursue the establishment of what was
then known in Ohio as “The Order of the Engineer.” While this group deliberated, seniors
at the Fenn College of Engineering at Cleveland State University, counseled by Dean Burl
Bush, designed and held the first ring ceremony and reception on June 4, 1970. About 170
engineering seniors and faculty members participated in the ceremony, during which each
participant signed a creed and received a stainless steel ring placed on the small finger of
the working hand. A second ceremony was held in Akron, Ohio in February 1971, which
included seniors at the University of Akron and practicing engineers.
Since then, The Order of the Engineer has grown to include tens of thousands of members
inducted at Links (local chapters) established in nearly every State in the union. Although
patterned after the Canadian concept, The Order of the Engineer has differences that
are distinctively associated with the United States of America. We ask you to accept and
interpret, most seriously and with pride, the meaning and purpose of the ceremony to
which you are about to subscribe: to uphold the standards and dignity of the engineering
profession.

“To find a career to which you are adapted by nature, and then to work hard at it, is
about as near to a formula for success and happiness as the world provides. One of the
fortunate aspects of this formula is that, granted the right career has been found, the
hard work takes care of itself. Then hard work is not hard work at all.”

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!
There is nothing more powerful than doing the right thing;
Not because you have to but because you want to even when difficult.
What we are today is a result of our own past actions;
There is no way to do a wrong thing the right way.
Whatever we wish to be in the future depends on what we do each day;
Decide how you have to act today; to achieve what you want tomorrow.
We are responsible for what we are, whatever we wish ourselves to be, and only we
have the power to make ourselves.
You leave this institution with the skills and talents of an engineer,
but more so the leaders of tomorrow.
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
