In addition to the MLA Breakfast, attended by 16 MLAs and 48 CEBC members, individual meetings were held with MLAs in Government and the Opposition. The breakfast speakers included Minister George Abbott (Education), MLA Ralph Sultan, one of our best supporters, Doug Donaldson, deputy opposition critic for Finance and Energy, and CEBC President Doug Hinton. Meetings were later held with 10 MLAs. We discussed consulting engineers’ contributions to the Premiers BC Jobs Plan, as a source of high-value employment tied to the knowledge economy, and our issues with an inconsistent infrastructure delivery model, the 30-year ultimate limitation period and procurement issues with the New West Partnerships Trade Agreement. Non-members (and out-of-province positions): $300 + HST. –2– October 2011 Chris Newcomb to Represent Canada on FIDIC's Executive Committee CEBC Professional Development Committee Call for Volunteers Canadian engineering firms will continue to have strong representation on international issues with the election of Chris Newcomb to the Executive Committee of FIDIC, the International Federation of Consulting Engineers. CEBC has recently re-established the Professional Development Committee, chaired by the past chair of the Young Professionals Group, Joel McAllister. The PD committee will seek to promote the ongoing professional development of CEBC members, with a special focus on the business side of consulting engineering. Goals and objectives for this committee were finalized over the summer by the current five committee members. We are looking for more volunteers to join this committee. We would also like to thank Doug Hinton for a great presentation on Dynamic Leadership in Project Management, and the Hyatt Regency Hotel staff for an excellent breakfast! Mr. Newcomb is President and CEO of McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. He is a past President of CEBC, and former Chair of ACEC. Currently he chairs the ACEC International Committee. He has also led ACEC's Student Outreach Committee, which founded the highly successful Engineering Legacies program. He is an ex officio CEBC Director, representing ACEC at our board meetings. Among other roles within the CEBC, he has chaired various industry liaison committees with the BC Ministries of Transportation and Forests. With extensive local and international engineering experience, Mr. Newcomb has held executive and advisory roles in many other professional organizations. He is fluent in English, French, and Spanish. His appointment was one of three announced at FIDIC's 2011 Conference in Davos, Switzerland. The new Executive Committee members were selected from among seven nominees worldwide and represent Canada, France, and Sweden respectively. Mr. Newcomb will be responsible for liaising with FIDIC's Young Professionals group and participating in the Business Practice Committee. FIDIC was founded in 1913 in Geneva, Switzerland. The Federation aims to represent the engineering industry internationally and to promote the business interests of consultant engineers. Its 89 member associations currently represent more than one million professionals.
