Residential Rates
RATE CODE RESIDENTIAL
Rate Code Residential is the standard rate most Mt. Wheeler Power
residential consumers are billed under. Here's how it works:
Customer Charge
First 220 kilowatt-hours
Next 580 kilowatt hours
Over 800 kilowatt hours
$8.00 per meter per month
8.883¢ per KWH
7.139¢ per KWH
5.5¢ per KWH
As you can see, your cost per kilowatt-hour will vary from month to
month depending on how many kilowatt-hours you use — the more
you use, the less your average cost per kilowatt-hour will be.
Suppose you used 600 kilowatt-hours during the month. Your bill
would be calculated as follows:
Customer Charge
220 KWH @ 8.883¢ / KWH
Next 380 KWH @ 7.139¢ / KWH
Total Bill
Average cost per kilowatt-hour
= $8.00
= $19.54
= $27.13
= $54.67
= 54.67/600 KWH = 9.1¢ / KWH
Now suppose you used 3,500 kilowatt-hours during the mouth. Your
bill would be calculated as follows:
Customer Charge
220 KWH @ 8.883¢ / KWH
Next 580 KWH @ 7.139¢/ KWH
Over 800 KWH @ 5.5¢ / KWH
Total Bill
Average cost per kilowatt-hour
= $ 8.00
= $19.54
= $41.41
= $148.50
= $217.45
= $217.4.5 / 3,500 KWH
= 6.21¢ / KWH
You can see that the average cost per kilowatt-hour is less
for 3,500 KWH!
Electric Heat /
Air Conditioning Rates
If you have electric heating or electric air conditioning in your
home, you are eligible to go on a special discount rate! This rate is
only 4.2¢ per kilowatt-hour for any electric heating or air conditioning you use.
There are two different rate options because there are two different
ways to determine how much of your total usage is for electric
heating or air conditioning. The options are:
RATE CODE H–1 METERED HEAT
RATE CODE H–2 UNMETERED HEAT
With Rate Code H–1 Metered Heat, you have a sub-meter installed
on your home that reads your exact heating or air conditioning
usage. Any usage recorded through this meter is only 4.2¢ / KWH.
There is no additional $8 monthly customer charge for the submeter.
With Rate Code H–2 Unmetered Heat, you don't need to have the
sub-meter installed. Instead, this rate adds a fourth step to the regular rates as listed above — any usage over 1,500 KWH during the
month is only 4.2¢ / KWH.
Here are some examples:
RATE CODE H-1 METERED HEAT
Suppose you used 1,000 KWH for heating and 1,000 KWH for everything else during one month:
Main meter bill calculation with 1,000 KWH recorded usage:
Customer Charge
220 KWH @ 8.883¢ / KWH
Next 580 KWH @ 7.139¢/ KWH
Over 800 KWH @ 5.5¢ / KWH
= $ 8.00
= $19.54
= $ 41.41
= $11.00
Sub–meter bill calculation with 1,000 KWH recorded usage:
1,000 KWH @ 4.2¢ / KWH
Total Bill
Average cost per kilowatt-hour
= $42.00
= $121.95
= $121.95 / 2,000 KWH
= 6.1¢ / KWH
RATE CODE H-2 UNMETERED HEAT
Here is an example calculation for Rate Code H-2 (the 1,500-average
method) supposing you used 3,500 kilowatt-hours during the month:
Customer Charge
220 KWH @ 8.883¢ / KWH
Next 580 KWH @ 7.139¢ / KWH
Next 700 KWH @ 5.5¢ / KWH
Over 1,500 KWH @ 4.2¢ / KWH
Total Bill
Average cost per kilowatt-hour
= $ 8.00
= $ 19.54
= $ 41.41
= $ 38.50
= $ 84.00
= $ 121
= $ 121.4 5/ 3,500 KWH
= 5.47¢ / KWH
Compare this total bill and average cost per kilowatt-hour with the calculation for Rate Code R above and you can see you would have saved.
How do I Know What Rate to Sign Up For?
NEW MEMBERS
If you are a new customer signing up for residential service with Mt.
Wheeler Power, you may choose any of the three rates available. As a
general rule–of–thumb, homes without electric heat wouldn't benefit
from the electric heat rates, so the regular Rate-Code Residential is
just fine.
If you do have electric heating, check to see if your home may already
be on a special electric heating / air conditioning rate. If not, you
should definitely sign up for Rate Code H–2 and may want to contact
an electrician to find out how much a sub–meter for Rate Code H-1
would be.
CURRENT MEMBERS
If you already receive service from Mt. Wheeler Power and have
electric heating / air conditioning in your home, you can sign up for
Rate Code H–2 or you can contact ,an electrician and have a sub-meter
installed for Rate Code H-–1. Rate comparisons using your actual
usage history are available upon request.
More information about these rates is available through Mt. Wheeler
Power Member Services Department.
