Ionization Smoke Detector
Designed with:
SD-I-24
3M™ Novec™ 1230
Fire Protection Fluid
The SD-I-24 can be used in all areas where Ionization Smoke
Detectors are required. The responsive, yet highly stable
operation allows the SD-I-24 to fit in a wide range of uses.
The SD-I-24 can be used in areas where early warning of
superheated or flaming combustibles is expected.
SB Series style bases may be used with the SD-I-24. The
only current compatible device is the SD-P-24 Photoelectric
detector.
Operation
The SD-I-24 ionization smoke detector utilizes two bi-colored
LED's for status indication purposes. In a normal standby
condition the LED's flash green approximately once each
second. When the detector senses smoke and goes into
alarm the status LED's will latch on red.
A single radioactive source of Americium-241 ionizes two
chambers within the detector, a reference chamber and the
smoke sensing chamber. The air is ionized by this source
and a small DC current flows between the electrodes of
each chamber. Smoke can freely enter the sensing chamber,
while the inner chamber is virtually sealed to smoke. Smoke
entering the sensing chamber causes a reduction in the DC
current flow, the voltage imbalance between the two chambers
is proportional to the smoke density. When the voltage
difference becomes great enough it causes the detector to go
into alarm. The two chamber design is utilized to compensate
for changes in atmospheric and environmental conditions.

Photoelectric Smoke Detector
Designed with:
SD-P-24
3M™ Novec™ 1230
Fire Protection Fluid
The SD-P-24 can be used in all areas where Photoelectric
Smoke Detectors are required. The wide range smoke
chamber makes the SD-P-24 well suited for fires ranging from
smoldering to flaming fires.
SB Series Style bases may be used with the SD-P-24. Current
interchangeable/compatible devices are the SD-I-24 ionization
detector.
Operation
The SD-P-24 photoelectric smoke detector utilizes two bicolored LED’s for indication of status. In a normal standby
condition the LED’s flash green every 3 seconds. When the
detector senses that its sensitivity has drifted outside the
UL listed sensitivity window the LED’s will flash red every
3 seconds. When the detector senses smoke and goes into
alarm the status LED’s will latch on red.
The detector utilizes an infrared LED light source and silicon
photo diode receiving element in the smoke chamber. In a
normal standby condition, the receiving element receives
no light from the pulsing LED light source. In the event of a
fire, smoke enters the detector smoke chamber and light is
reflected from the smoke particles to the receiving element.
The light received is converted into an electronic signal.
Signals are processed and compared to a reference level, and
when two consecutive signals exceeding the reference level
are received within a specified period of time, the time delay
circuit triggers the SCR switch to activate the alarm signal.
The status LED’s light continuously during the alarm period.
