Handlingcloseto40millionpassengerseachyear,KingsfordSmith
InternationalAirportisAustralia’slargestandbusiesthub.Terminal
1wasopenedin1970and,duetotheinternationalflights,is
consideredthegatewaytotheworld.Afterextensiverefurbishment
focusedprimarilyonthesecuritycontrolpointaswellastheretail
anddepartureareaatitsfarside,theterminalhasbeenshiningina
newlightsinceautumn2015.Itstransformationisowedinnosmall
parttoERCO.TheLüdenscheidLightFactorysuppliedtheSkim
downlightsthatnowilluminatethissectionoftheterminalwith
brilliantlyefficientambientlighting.
Efficiencywithhighluminousfluxandlowmaintenancefor
maximisedlongevityofthelightingsystem
BasedonmasterplansdesignedbynotedAustralianengineering
consultancyAureconasthecoordinator,theterminalwas
refurbishedwithoutdisruptingairportoperations.Specifications
forthelightingsystemincludedmaximumenergyefficiencywith
optimalluminousfluxpackages,reliabilityandlongevity.Giventhat
internationalairportssuchasSydneyeffectivelyoperate24/7,all
technicalequipmentinpublicspacesmustbedesignedforan
absoluteminimumofmaintenance.Astenderswereinvited,ERCO’s
lightingsolutionbasedonSkimdownlightsprovedsuperiorinall
respects.Pivotaltothedecisionofadesignconceptbuiltaround
theERCOSkimlightingtoolswastheirexcellentefficiency,
reliabilityandversatility.
Asaqualitycriterion,allERCOLEDluminairesguaranteeexcellent
lumenmaintenance.Advancedpassivethermalmanagementasa
focalpointatERCOensuresthatatleast90%ofallLEDsstillachieve
morethan90%oftheoriginalluminousfluxforupto50,000
hours.Effectively,thismeansthattheluminousfluxofnomore
than10%ofallLEDsinthisperiodreducesto90%orless(L90/B10).
Uptothatpoint,thefailurerateofindividualLEDsusedatERCOis
just0.1%,meaningthatevenafter50,000hours,theluminaire
remainsfullyoperational.
Powerfulwithoutglare–evenfromuphigh
Theceilinginthesecurityscreeningareameasuresaround3.5m
fromthefloor.Suspendedwithwhitepanels,itwasmatchedwith
whiteSkimdownlightswithaconnectedloadaslowas18Wand
warmwhitelight(3000K).Theresultinguniformilluminationwith
optimumglarecontrolcreatesacalmandpleasantatmospherein
thishighlysensitivearea.
Theretailanddepartureareasaredesignedmainlylikeatypical
shoppingmall,withSkimdownlightsilluminatingthecirculation
zones.Ataround6m,themainlywhiteceilingisbrokenupbythree
blacklinesrunningparallelfromoneendofthemalltotheotheras
astrikingdesignfeature.Soasnottodisruptthiseffect,theSkim
downlightsinstalledintheselinesfeatureblackanti-glareconesto
ensureanunobtrusiveappearanceintheceiling.Skimowesits
powerfulyetdiscreetperformancetothesuperiorglarecontrolof
thespeciallydevelopedERCOlenssystem.Withanoutputof28W,
theneutralwhitelightratedat4000Kcombinesperfectlywiththe
mall’sdaylight,creatingabrightandpleasantlyfreshambience
illuminatedbysophisticatedlightingtools.Evenfromagreat
height,Skimprovidesilluminationofexceptionaluniformity,
therebyaddingdistinctlytothemall’shighamenityvalue–an
impressionthatissharedbytheairport’soperatorandpassengersin
overwhelminglypositivefeedback.
