INDUSTRIAL MANAGEMENT, ICT BUSINESS INTERNATIONAL SEMESTER

Information about the international semesters:
* This international semester is a part of the Industrial Management degree programme, with a focus on Global ICT Business.
The 3rd year courses in Global ICT Business are offered in English.
* Industrial Management combines the interests of both engineering and business management. This programme specialises
in business-oriented ICT Management. A key focus is on learning by doing, and a large project is offered every semester.

Who is it for:
* Students interested in the international semester should have an ICT Business/engineering background or at least an
interest in the field.
* Students who join the Industrial Management semester must have completed the first two years of core requirement
studies in their home institutions. These first two study years should have included mathematics, physics and data
processing.
* The International semesters are offered as packages, so students should choose all the courses in one of the semester
packages.
* Since the international semesters include a lot of writing in English, the participating students should have a B2 level of
proficiency in English in European standards. Here you can find the description of the B2 level:

from the students from our partner universities
Please note! There is a limited number of places for each semester so we are not necessarily able to offer places
for all applicants. Selection of participants will be made after the application period has ended.
AUTUMN SEMESTER GLOBAL ICT BUSINESS
The core project of the autumn semester is a 10 credit Innovation Project. In the project the students plan and develop a
solution or an application and also prove the business case for it. The project team is multidisciplinary, with students from
different study programmes, eg, Industrial Management, Media Engineering and Communication.

SPRING SEMESTER GLOBAL ICT BUSINESS
The core project of the spring semester is a ca 20 credit IT Service Management (ITSM) Project. In the project the students
learn ITSM and especially a method for developing it called ITIL. The students then use this knowledge to solve an ITSM
problem in a real company. In the project the students learn ITSM, how to write a Bachelor’s Thesis, business communication
and process development.

The student
• Learns about the IT Service Industry and the companies in it

Learning outcomes of the course
The student will learn about IT services and their management. The main part of the course concerns ITIL:
concepts, structure, processes and principles. The students will apply ITSM and/or ITIL in a project.

Learning outcomes of the course
The student learns to deal with a customer project in a professional and interactive a manner, taking into account
the expectations of the discourse community, client, client’s organization culture, language and style. This covers
communication events that are both written and oral.
The student consolidates a positive view on his/ her language and communication competences through the
process of peer and self-evaluation. The student fosters the ability to continue developing language and
communication skills.
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Course in Professional English. Level B2 and above.
Course contents
- Written genres of a customer project: first contact, email, status report, agenda, memo, Bachelor’s Thesis text.
- Oral communications: informal meetings, steering group meetings, presentations
- Peer and self-evaluation of texts and oral communications
TU00AA64-3003 Research Skills, 3 cr *
Learning outcomes of the course
This course prepares the student for the Bachelor’s Thesis process. The student can differentiate between research
knowledge and other kinds of knowledge and exercise source critique.
The student knows how to analyze a Bachelor’s Thesis, and the discourse requirements of each of its parts. He/she
produces a research paper which is a mini Bachelor’s Thesis, implemented as a group task. The work includes
existing knowledge search, data collection and reporting in both written and oral presentation.
The student learns to analyze and summarize academic texts, collect and analyze data and produce a solution to
the research problem that serves the client, and to document the process into a report format.
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Course in Professional English. Level B2 and above.

- Criteria of scientific research and other knowledge; categories of knowledge; analysis of research reports and
their characteristics; referencing knowledge

Learning outcomes of the course
The course aims to give an understanding of the impact of industrial services on manufacturing companies and of
how industrial services influence companies' business development. The student knows how services can enable
business development of companies and what impact this has on competitive advantage. The student understands
the new opportunities for value co-creation and changing relationships between companies as a result of increased
service content.

Learning outcomes of the course
The student is familiar with the strategic importance of a culture of excellence. The student also understands the
principles of business and quality development. He/she is familiar with the concept of quality systems and
recognizes some quality tools. The student learns about some recent industry examples. The student is able to
apply his/her knowledge to a case example.

Learning outcomes of the course
The student
• is familiar with the internationalization theories
• can explore the reasons for companies to establish international business activities

Internationalization process (Finnish companies, Finnish industry), export and import activities, foreign direct
investments, born global phenomenom and multinational enterprises. International marketing.

Learning outcomes of the course
After the course the student understands the differences between management and leadership. He/she can use
the basic processes of leading a business from strategy to daily operations, and leading performance. He/she
understands how people get motivated, inspired and committed. The student can use simple processes for leading
change and innovativeness, developing competence and methods of sharing knowledge.

Accomplishment
The course contains theme-specific hands-on exercises during the classes. In addition students prepare in teams of
two a small study on a leadership theme and present the paper to the class. The study should contain a theoretical
part and a small practical part describing how the main issues of the theme are implemented by some technology
companies.
TU00AB32-3008 Business Game, 3 cr
Learning outcomes of the course
Business Game course is based on an on-line business simulation game that develops students’ understanding of
the complexity of global business operations in a dynamic competitive environment. It integrates a range of
concepts from various management-related disciplines, including economic, political, financial, accounting,
procurement, production, logistics, research and innovation, and marketing. The task for the student teams is to
manage a global mobile telecommunications company through technological evolution in the fast-paced 21st
century operating environment. Students will develop and execute strategies for their simulated company
operating in the USA, Asia, and Europe.
