Lower Consumption in City and
Long-Distance Traffic.
The operator Regionalbus Augsburg drives economically with Irisbus and DIWA.5.
Between the Altmühl Valley and Lake Constance, Regionalbus Augsburg GmbH
(RBA) moves 27 million passengers every year. The RBA fleet used in this traffic
region, which covers about a quarter of the entire surface of Bavaria, also includes
Irisbus Crossway and GX 427 vehicles. In these buses, the Voith DIWA.5 auto
matic transmission for city and long-distance buses is proving itself day after day.
Irisbus Crossway LE with DIWA.5
Buses have to endure a lot – not only in
stop-start city traffic but also on longdistance routes. Voith has developed
the DIWA transmission specifically for
such demanding applications. World
wide, more than 250 000 buses are
fitted with it. Voith has been enjoying a
long and successful business relationship with Irisbus. Voith has been the
main supplier of automatic transmissions to the Irisbus Group for many
years.
The vehicles in question are 12-meter low-entry buses (Irisbus Crossway LE) and
18-meter low-floor articulated buses (Irisbus Heuliez GX 427), which have just
entered service at Regionalbus Augsburg. The Irisbus Crossway LE and Irisbus GX 427
vehicles operate all around Augsburg and also in the Ingolstadt region. RBA places
high priority on the comfort of its passengers. The Irisbus articulated buses have
special features such as additional triangular windows below the window line, roof
windows, interior LED lights and additional illuminated fields with blue lights.
Low wear, high driving comfort
Another plus in comfort is offered by the Voith DIWA.5 automatic transmission fitted
in the RBA buses. DIWA.5 allows stepless, jolt-free and comfortable start-ups across
a speed range where conventional automatic transmissions already need to shift two
to three times. This means up to 50 percent fewer gearshifts – and therefore lower
wear, higher driving comfort and more safety for the passengers.
High availability and fuel savings
What really convinced the operator when he decided in favor of Voith drive tech
nology for his buses was that the new Irisbuses can be run so economically. The
vehicles are fitted with Iveco Cursor engines and Voith DIWA.5 automatics including
SensoTop. Regionalbus Augsburg’s comments on how the buses proved themselves in practical operation were positive throughout: “Outstanding economy due
to high availability and extremely low fuel consumption. These are just some of the
reasons why RBA decided in favor of vehicles with diesel engines and DIWA.5.”
According to Wilfrid Venerius, Managing Director of RBA, who spoke to the trade
magazine “Omnibusspiegel”, the Crossway LE buses stand out by 10 to 15 % less
fuel consumption compared to other vehicles in his fleet.
Damper and gear shifting program reduce operating costs
The topography-dependent gear shifting program “SensoTop” contributes to lower
operating costs due to reduced fuel consumption. This also applies to the hydraulic
torsional vibration damper Hydrodamp: it keeps engine vibrations away from the
transmission and thus favors driving at the lowest possible engine speeds.
As installation space in buses is scarce, Voith has ensured easy integration into the
vehicle when the transmission was developed. Compact outer dimensions combined
with a relatively low weight make the transmission installation easier. The heat
exchanger is integrated into the output, eliminating the need for exterior pipes or oil
tubes.
DIWA.5
DIWA advantages at a glance
+High efficiency due to mechanichydrodynamic power split
+Stepless start-ups for maximum
driving comfort
+Protection of driveline due to fewer
gearshifts, especially in the lower
speed range
+Continuously high gear shifting
comfort, whatever the operating
conditions
+Automatic shift into neutral ANS
(complete separation of transmission and engine) helps save fuel
+Cooling concept for high availability
+Comprehensive operating data
storage facility to optimize vehicle
configuration for daily operation,
as well as service and preventive
maintenance
+Transmission oil change intervals
of up to 180 000 km
