fixing the roads housing, job creation and
the overcrowding of schools. Prioritise
basic service delivery in the NW. The
people want running water; so I don’t really see the importance of rebranding the
North West. Such social problems the
lack of service is preventing them from
delivering on its responsibilities promised
to the citizens. Is the rebranding of the
North West really important? Can the
new premier of North West afford time
in the rebranding while the area is challenged by social economic issues? With
the provinces current battles with the
ongoing striking of miners in Marikana

the miners about the ARV’s issue on how
they are not accessible to the in-patient ,

Criminals run Mayhem in Brits
Do criminals get easy access to
guns ahead of law-abiding South
African Citizens?
A
fternoon around 13:15 last week
Thursday, at the Brits mall armed
men with semi-automatic hand guns
ambushed the ground level of the
Brits mall heading to the jewelry store
resulting in stealing jewelry in the process. Bullets flew all over the building
mall, on anyone tried to move an inch
of their body in the mall. On Their
way out a security at the entrance was
shot, and the other one who tried to
closed the main entrance gate of the
mall was also shot by one of their the
armed robbers. This is not the first
time these robbers try their luck in
robbing malls, two weeks back in Brits
at the Shoprite shopping complex
an armed robbers ambushed by the
complex in an attempt to rob to the
shops leading to the shooting the of a
security in the process.
Where does this leave the law abiding citizens of South Africa? We are
not safe at all, the government needs
to give as the means to protect ourselves. On 19 May 2014 around 8:45
3 armed robbers traveling in a white
Toyota Camry walked in on the Spar
owner on his way to Nedbank at gun
point demanding money. It was a
terrifying ordeal for the owner and bystanders who were present at that moment. No one got injured during the
armed robbery. In today’s democracy
it looks like law abiding citizens of
South Africa find it difficult to access
a gun for self-protection. Such situations make it easy for criminals to gain
access the homes of innocent families
around the country. We need a system
that can offer better protection to innocent people. Unlike in the apartheid
era law abiding citizens could walk
into a gun store and buy a gun with
all documentation in one day. Today’s
South Africa is making it more and
more difficult to access a gun, it can
take a person up to two years to get a
gun in South Africa. A need to have
a gun should be a right to all citizens.
When the government makes it hard
for innocent citizens to get guns for
self-protection they actually taking
away the right of that person for self
protection.
The security guard was shot in his legs
The Swiss government issues every
adult person able that has served in
the Swiss army with a machine gun to
take home with him. So why would a
criminal want to rob a place knowing
that for a fact there’s a machine gun
waiting for him. So that is why there’s
a low crime rate in the country of
Switzerland. We also as South African
government need to improve the security border gates, causing countries
like Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Congo
they still experiencing civil war. The
right to keep and bear arms is guaranteed in our constitution. Access
to firearms for law-abiding citizens is
critical to keep that right intact.

South Africa’s Golden eggs and the ANC
Providing basic services to the
poor is crucial if we are to break
the poverty cycle that oppresses
the majority of South Africans.
These basic services include education, healthcare, electricity,
water and sanitation, transport,
and telecommunications the
essentials that people need in
order to participate and advance
in society.
E
lectricity is a key input in manufacturing, mining and other
important sectors of the South African economy. It is a significant cost
for firms in the automobile, mining
engineering and metal-related sectors
and there is ample evidence that many
companies are already reeling from
the threefold increase of the average
Eskom electricity price from around
20c/kWh in 2007 to the present rate
of 61c/kWh. Providing basic services
to the poor is crucial if we are to break
the poverty cycle that oppresses the
majority of South Africans.
These basic services include education, healthcare, electricity, water and
sanitation, transport, and telecommunications the essentials that people need in order to participate and
advance in society. Government`s
major solution informed by the virtues
of “extending markets” and increasing “consumer choice” is to accelerate
the privatisation process. Privatisation
effectively includes contracting gov-
ernment functions out of the public
sector or selling state assets. But does
privatisation benefit the benefits the
SA economy and the people?
Today 16 % of the population are in
private health costing R36 billion a
year. This is more than the R32 billion
spent by the public health sector that
covers the remaining 84 per cent of
the population. Over-servicing in private health has driven medical inflation to over 300 per cent in real term.
The poor are completely priced out of
this private health market. The poor
instead use the public sector that, due
to fiscal constraints, has seen public
health per person spending fall by
15 per cent in real terms since 1996,
resulting in deteriorating healthcare
for the poor. While government has
succeeded in rolling out more water
infrastructure (taps and pipes) to the
poor, communities are expected to pay.
gave the investors
full control of the
enterprise through a
“shareholder agreement”. As part of
the service agreement, government
required Telkom to
roll out 1, 9 million new phones
to disadvantaged
areas. In the three
years since then, the
price of local calls,
which the poor use,
has risen by 35 per
cent in real terms, while international
calls (used by businesses and the rich)
have fallen by 40 per cent in real
terms. The local call increases have
led to disconnections that have almost
matched the roll out of new lines. After accounting for disconnections, the
reality is that there was a bigger roll
out of new lines before Telkom was
privatised than after.
Even communities who never paid for
water before now have to. While government has intended to contractually oblige the outsourced water management companies to deliver affordable and quality services, in practice
contracts have been invariably renegotiated soon after privatisation, and
tariffs increased. Recently national
government announced a “free water”
programme, but without the support
of additional national funds needed
for effective implementation.
Government sold 30 % of Telkom
to a US-Malaysian consortium, and
Eskom, under public sector management, is one of the cheapest electricity producers in the world. However,
government intends to permit private
generation of up to 30 per cent of
electricity, particularly through transferring the stake to a b lack empowerment consortium. Privatisation consultants advising government estimate
that the cost of electricity for households will have to be increased by up
to 50 per cent. This is against a back-
drop where there are already 10 000
electricity cut-offs to poor households
in Soweto every month. Public transport is an important basic service, desperately needed to counter the spatial
effects of apartheid planning. In this
regard, government, advised by international consultants, has proposed that
the components of the public railway
enterprise, Spoornet, be privatised.
Part of the privatisation would require
closing or downscaling “unprofitable”
railways lines, mainly those serving
poor areas. Significantly, trade unions
recently forced government into accepting a joint stakeholder technical
task team to analyse the feasibility of
the proposed privatisation. This team
came to the unambiguous conclusion that the consultants` advice was
wrong, and that Spoornet would be
better off if it was not privatised.

ANC voters are realising they are an

there was a trend where people disillusioned by the ANC were increasingly
looking to independent candidates.
Should ANC be worried about

Nevertheless, a resident who stays

Alcohol kills one person every 10 Election: Failure due to the interseconds worldwide
nal legal battles taking place.
The internal battles in the ANC
government are slowly killing
the organization Tata Mandela
worked for.
Alcohol kills 3.3 million people
worldwide each year, more than
AIDS, tuberculosis and violence
combined, according to the World
Health Organization, warning
that booze consumption was on
the rise.
A
lcohol causes one in 20 deaths
globally every year, the UN health
agency said. “This actually translates
into one death every 10 seconds. Alcohol caused some 3.3 million deaths
in 2012, WHO said, equivalent to 5.9
percent of global deaths 7.6 percent
for men and 4.0 percent for women. In
comparison, HIV/AIDS is responsible
for 2.8 percent, tuberculosis causes 1.7
percent of deaths and violence is responsible for just 0.9 percent, the study
showed. More people in countries where
alcohol consumption has traditionally
been low, like China and India, are also
increasingly taking up the habit as their
wealth increases, it said. “More needs
to be done to protect populations from
the negative health consequences of
alcohol consumption. Drinking is linked
to more than 200 health conditions, including liver cirrhosis and some cancers.
Alcohol abuse also makes people more
susceptible to infectious diseases like
tuberculosis, HIV and pneumonia, the
report found. Most deaths attributed to
alcohol, around a third, are caused by
associated and diabetes. Alcohol-related
accidents, such as car crashes, were the
second-highest killer, accounting for
I
generally will always find my way to
the voting booth when a public election is scheduled. Why? Because elections matter. They probably are more
important the more local they are. Yet
even on a national scale we see how
electing the wrong person can have a
negative impact to the society at large.
Recently with the Nkandla making
headlines all over the world with the
spending on Nkandla upgrade in the
KZN province. The public prosecutor
also announced that such spending was
unlawful and has benefited only the
Zuma family and friends, such internal
matters really put South Africa under
the spot light in the government system
in lighting how corruption is killing the
freedom Nelson Mandela work for in
the country. There has been also rumors
of the in fighting for the next President
after president Zuma, these are the type
of fights we should at all level.
around 17.1 percent of all alcohol-related deaths. While people in the world’s
wealthiest nations, in Europe and the
Americas especially, are boozier than
people in poorer countries, rising wealth
in emerging economies is also driving
up alcohol consumption.
Drinking in populous China and India
is rising particularly fast as people earn
more money, the WHO said, warning
that the average annual intake in China
was likely to swell by 1.5 litres of pure
alcohol by 2025. Still, Eastern Europe
and Russia are home to the world’s biggest drinkers. Russian men who drink
consumed an average of 32 litres of
pure alcohol a year, according to 2010
statistics, followed by other Western
countries including Europe, Canada,
the United States, Australia and South
Africa. On average, every person above
the age of 15 worldwide drinks 6.2 litres
of pure alcohol in a year, according to
the report. Counting only those who
drink though, that rises to 17 litres of
pure alcohol each year.
The economy’s engine, has been battered by wildcat strikes, causing the
biggest companies to shed thousands of
jobs in the face of wage demands and
spreading violence. In August a confrontation at a platinum mine in Marikana,
nearRustenburg, led to 34 deaths at the
hands of the police. Foreign investment
is drying up. The unemployment rate
officially 25%, is probably nearer 40%;
half of South Africans under 24 looking
for work have none. Of those who have
jobs, a third earn less than R15 a day.
Inequality has grown since apartheid,
and the gap between rich and poor is
now among the world’s largest.
The ruling African National Congress
(ANC) is not entirely to blame. South
Africa has performed worse than its African neighbours in recent years partly
because its mature economy is linked
more tightly to the rich world, and thus
to the rich world’s problems. And the
ANC has notched up some genuine
achievements, including housing and
some welfare services often denied to
the poor black majority under apartheid. But the party’s incompetence and
outright corruption are the main causes
of South Africa’s sad decline.

orth West Premier
Supra Mahumapelo
has condemned the slaying of a mineworker who was allegedly
stabbed to death while on his way to
work at the Anglo American Platinum
Mine. After he was sworn in as premier,
Mahunapelo made commitment that
he will bring rival union Amcu and
NUM under one roof to negotiate ways
of restoring peace and stability in the
platinum sector, as wage talks with with
mine bosses underway. “Despicable acts
of violence and intimidation of nonstriking workers call for parties involved
in the wage dispute to find each other
to bring the strike to an end. One death
of a miner due to violence associated
with the protracted strike is a death too
many,”
he South African National Roads
Agency Ltd (Sanral) had a dream
to transform and improve Gauteng’s
road infrastructure. The Gauteng Open
Road Tolling Intelligent Transportation
System should ease congestion, upgrade
and build better road systems, aid in
commerce between suppliers and consumers, reduced costs of traditional toll
roads and more. Tolling has been a successful endeavour for some cities such as
London where it is used to regulate city

on non-striking miners are behind bars,
Mahumapelo also called to employers
to tighten the security of non-striking
workers who are reporting for duty. He
also urged law enforcement agencies to
bring those behind these killing to book.
The National Union of Mineworkers
had reportedly claimed that the death
of the slain mineworkers whom they
declared was their member brings to
five such brutal killings experienced in
the platinum belt in the past two week.
Five people have in the past been killed
and the police say they are head on their
heels in attempts to apprehend those
behind the killings.
The reality of e-tolling is far removed
from the dream. E-tolls appear to be
a five year ill-conceived plan with five
missed launch dates and with most vocalising dissent. The Congress of South
African Trade Unions (Cosatu), the
Democratic Alliance, the Automobile
Association of SA, the Freedom Front
Plus and the Economic Freedom Fighters are just some of those opposing the
e-tolling system. As a result, The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa)

Premier Mahumapelo said. In appealing to communities to assist police in
their investigations to ensure that those
behind the senseless violence unleashed

opposition, limited attempts at public
engagement apart from a few newspaper adverts seeking responses in 2007
and little to no public transport alternatives are just some of the reasons why
so many are up in arms about e-tolls.
Many argue that foreign companies are
the ones that will benefit and not South
Africa as is purported. For example,
Austrian company Kapsch Traffic Com
stands to gain an annual revenue boost
of more than €50 million (R678 million)
for eight years from e-tolling. So much
for helping the South African economy.
Tolls will add to the burdens of workers and the poor, who will be forced to
pay to travel on highways. It is a lie that
only the middle class use our highways.
Many low income earners use private
cars to travel to work not through choice
but because they have no reliable alternative. They are already burdened by
rising fuel prices and electricity tariffs,
and the tolls will be yet another blow.

Local celebs celebrate Dawn Day
Spa launch in style
Civil Service in South Africa
The role of the Civil Service is
to serve the civil society so that ordinary men and women can enjoy
the benefits of living in an organized environment
On a sunny autumn afternoon, a
host of local celebrities including reality TV star Khanyi Mbau,
model and businesswoman Sonia
Booth and actress Zakeeya Patel
flocked to the Clico Boutique Hotel in Rosebank for the launch of
the Dawn Day Spa 2014.
T

millions in the diastral department
instead of using civil voluntary civil
service from the public in fighting such challenges. The recent floods
which took place in the Lephalele area

have been used to try in stopping the
floods through the civil service project.
In other countries civil service is a must
meaning compulsory, or can either do it
through army service or state for many
South Africans, a job in the civil service
is the only path to leading a comfortable
middle class life. Never the less is vital

face of Dawn, actress and model
Mbali Mlotshwa, who welcomed the
media, celebs, bloggers and online influencers who attended and explained how
this year’s Dawn Day Spa campaign is
going to roll out. The Dawn Day Spa
campaign, now in its third year, officially
starts in the last weekend of May when
a container that has been transformed
into a mobile spa will travel to communities in Johannesburg, KZN, Limpopo
and Mpumalanga. Anyone who presents
a till slip for a Dawn product will be
treated to a relaxing head, neck, shoulders or hand massage from the Dawn
masseurs at the mobile spa.

and guests at the launch a taste of what
to expect when the mobile spa starts

was treated to an afternoon of relaxing

inside and out.
A competition will run alongside the

The role of the Civil Service is to serve
the civil society so that ordinary men

living in an organized environment.
Civil service can go a long way for the
people of South Africa especially with
the high employment rate on the raise,
they could learn and equip themselves
in obeying the elders and completing
task. The military service is also a good
one because it will enhance the discipline of the unemployment youth for
a greater opportunity for them. Civil
service in a society helps keeping costs
low for the government intervening in
disaster areas and keeping order when
“We couldn’t have asked for a better
turn out for the official launch of the
Dawn Day Spa 2014,” said Mnikelo
Qubu, brand manager for Dawn. “A
host of TV crews came through to cover
the launch and amplify the positive message that this year, the Dawn Day Spa is
not only spoiling Dawn consumers, but
it’s also changing the lives of our three
lucky winners.”
it is neccesary after natural disasters. In
our country since the institution of a
democratic society alot has changed as it
seems our civil responsibilities have been
put aside. As members of a society we
are expected to lend our time and not
only on Mandela Day but when needed.
Creating a civil service in our country
will make ordinary citizens part and
responsible for the well being of fellow
citizens in distress. Moving forward in a
civil society where less and less people in
South Africa are confronted with a neccesity to work towards a common goal
that of the wealth of our nation that will
make it possible to relieve many burdens
from institutions that act privately like
gift of the givers, the Red Cross and
many other volunteer organisations that
do not have the resources and equipment to assist people in distress. Just in
the past year we have had many natural
disasters in South Africa going from the
droughts in the North West to the heavy
floods in the North West that created
damage and havoc all over.
We did not see a precise plan of intervention organised from the provincial
government only amounts of financial
aid that was suppose to be distributed to
the various disaster stricken areas.

Mmakau councilor arrested for
tempering with water valves
Another slap on the face of the
ANC; an ANC Madibeng councilor Tsheko Bogale of ward 19 in
Mmakau was arrested by Brits
police and has appeared in Garankua Magistrate Court for bail
applications were him and three
other men arrested were granted
a free bail pending on further investigations by the police.
C
ouncilor Bogale and three other
suspects were arrested on Thursday
morning on the 15th May after being
caught tempering with water valves that
transfer water to Mothutlung. That
problem caused water shortage at the
community and lead to a protest where
four (4) residents were killed by the police during the protest, an investigation
into the killing is under way. It is alleged
that the same councilor and his cronies
took part in organizing and mobilizing
Mmakau residents to join in the protest
happened in Mothutlung. According
to residents, it is further alleged that
they sabotaged the water and then took
kickbacks from water tankers hired to
deliver water.
Furthermore, residents thought that
tempering of water valves was mainly
to cause conflicts between the ANC and
the EFF so that there be violence in the
community and the ruling party (ANC)
losses support on the elections. Conniving within the house of the ANC in
Madibeng council has taken its toll.
While others negatively condemned
such actions by the councilor and say
that this is not a politically motivated
issue, it is a matter beyond that where it
involves huge millions on tenders. Also
further extended their grievances to the
Magistrate who allowed the suspects to
be freed and afraid that they (suspects)
will deliberately temper with the most
important investigations. Residents of
Madibeng have been suffering for decades for clean water and not receiving
water regularly. Some residents thought
that the local municipality of Madibeng
is failing them and which is why there
should be a proper security measures
in all municipal property to ensure that
acts such as these are not experienced
once again. In some parts of the Municipality, residents have raised concerns
about the reading of water meters
and say officials are miscalculating the
meters and resulting in rates being over
charged. Literally, all the incidents are a
clear indications that the Local Municipality of Madibeng’s councilors, officials
and or the general public use their powers to gain advantage of many. unruly
things within its council.

residents disgruntled
with the municipality
for not responding to
the problem. Residents have voiced out
their concerns. These
will also lead to resident at swartspruit,
hartbeesspoort drinking contaminated
water. Provincial Coordinator in the
North West believes that the Municipality is failing to execute its duty to ensure
a safe environment for the community,
and after three years of continuous pollution, the Municipality still has no answers. The polluting of water will lead
to residents getting infected by cholera
disease, you kids who play in the dams
as recreation and outdoor sport. Hartbeespoort is such a wonderful place for
people enjoyment especially the dam, so
let’s preserve our land for future use.
This could result in the resident getting sick. The Local Municipality of
Madibeng has been battling for years
to find solutions on restructuring and
repairing the continuous blockage of
the sewers in its vicinity. The unsolvable conditions in the areas is causing
illnesses to residents situated next to
them. In South Africa the scarce fresh

On the 14 May, concern residents called
on a meeting and in the meeting, they
accused Community Liaison Officer
(CLO) Mr Maestro Diremelo for not
handling the recruitment issues in a very
transparent manner. They said Diremelo gave jobs to his friends and also
defending Mbanga Trading Enterprise
to apply the so-called cooperate social
investment which is the social responsibility. “The company was supposed
to clean the entire sports field using a
T.L.B and a Grader and nothing has
been done so far.” said Andrew Motlogeloa.
“Diremelo was also heard saying to
me (Japie Andrew Motlogeloa) that the
company cannot buy anything for the
under 15 boys soccer kids and equipment reason being that Bakgatla ba
Mmakau Sports Organization’s senior
is a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA).” “Construction manager did
not respond to that but Diremelo kept
on saying that the kids will not receive
anything, and by doing so, it means that
the kids will not be able to play soccer
to their maximum potential.” “Another
terrible thing happened when Fire Birds
sports ground at Killarney (Mmakau)
was canceled to be a transfer waste
station. Where is the future of children
in Mmakau because the previous rains
destroyed many soccer fields.” said Andrew Motlogeloa. Meanwhile, Motlhake
Primary School is having visitors from
another school in the North West Province to play soccer and netball. People
around Mmakau and Mothutlung are
invited to come to the school event, it
will be an event of a life time – kids will
pay R5 and adults R10 for entrance to
the pitch. Lots of entertainment will be
galore with DJ Mr. Guffy and Halleberry-M spinning the discs all day long.
Sponsors of the event Hagels donated
with trophy and medals, Vodacom

an increase in pollution and the destruction of river catchments, caused by
urbanisation, deforestation, damming of
rivers, destruction of wetlands, industry, mining, agriculture, energy use,
and accidental water pollution. “The
failure of Madibeng to bring a stop to
the dangerous pollution is unacceptable.
A legal route legal route that will force
the Municipality to pay attention to the
issue. E. coli levels in the sewage, which
seems to be untreated, have exceeded 1
000 000 units per 100 ml in one test.
The national regulations require that
the maximum E. coli in water should be
below 1 000 units per 100 ml. During
the meeting with the Madibeng Municipality, upgrades are needed at the sewage plant in and around Hartbeespoort.
No upgrades have been done since
2011. “The pollution has to be dealt
with promptly, as it can affect the health
of residents.

INTERTOY TOYOTA DONATED DRY MACS – KUTLWANO PRIMARY SCHOOL
The donation came up after the
school principal Mr. Jeremiah

learners should get warm this

and five (105) needy learners from
its data-base and requested donations

14 May 2014, the school was surprised
by the presence of both Mrs. Elmarie
Booysen of Dealer Principle and Susan Habig a sales consultant at Toyota
Knight having 105 towel padded dry
macs for learners. Learners could not
hold back their smiles and laughter
of excitement and appreciation for
what they received, and could not stop
thanking Toyota representatives who
were present at the time.
The principal of the school Mr. Sello
encouraged educators to see this
donation as a gesture of good will and
to visit Toyota whenever they need

important for them (learners) to go to
school and learn. Also encouraged them that education is the best

XUMUGA PROJECT and TRANSPORT in OUKASIE
A registered Non Governmental
Organization (NGO) Xumuga
Project and Transport was officially launched at the oldest
church of the late Mr. Senotlolo
and his residential home in
Oukasie at 2pm on the 25 May.
O
ne of the main aims of the project is to help the youth of Oukasie with having drivers learners and
of-cause licenses. In terms of helping
the youth, professional instructors
from the NGO will provide lessons
in classes using reading modules and
issuing reading books for the learners.
For those who will be accumulating
required marks during the lessons and
qualifies for the learner bookings, will
then had to be registered at the traffic
department for learners test and driving inspections.
Xumuga Project and Transport’s
CEO Mr General Matome and his
technical team comprising of Joe
Moeng and Karabo Masebe engaged
themselves with two schools in Ouka-
sie requesting venues for the lessons.
Both schools through their principals
Odi Primary and Botlhabelo Secondary agreed to offer classes for learners
and Odi Primary will host community
members. Not only members of the
community will benefit out of the
initiative but learners as well will get a
taste of Xumuga Project and Transport. The NGO will also make sure
that learners who are still in grade 11
and 12 receives drivers licenses while
studying.
Those learners from grade 11 and 12
will attend classes after their school
lessons in one of the classes in Botlhabelo. Before the NGO was registered,
Proportional Representative councilor
(PR councilor) at the Local Municipality of Madibeng Mr Matome say he
had used his money from his pocket to
help the youth who are battling to find
drivers licenses. He has assisted seven
members of community with all the
payments for their drivers license.
Mr. Matome is proud today to have
made the differences in his commu-
nity by taking part in the help to fight
unemployment through a helping
hand. He is looking forward to helping more youth from his home town.
During his interview with Madibeng
Times, Andrew Matome a CEO of
the organization told the media how
important his community means
to him and say as a member of the
government, he want to give back
to the community particularly the
vulnerable youth who are unemployment. “Jobs are very much difficult to
get especially in Madibeng so that is
why we started this initiative to make
job hunting easier for all and motorists drive safe on the road. When you
apply for a job, one of the biggest key
requirements will be a drivers license.”
“Xumuga Project and Transport is
here to prepare youth for their jobs
with four well-trained instructors. The
lessons will begin on Monday (26 May
2014) at 2pm in Odi Primary School
and Botlhabelo Secondary School and
run Mondays to Fridays. I was very
impressed about the way community
members responded, it showed cour-
age and enthusiastic. ” “With the high
rate of deaths in vehicle accidents
in Madibeng, drivers found without
proper driving documentations and
causing unwanted accidents. The
NGO has planned to work hand-inglove with the Traffic Department to
make sure all the drivers are safe on
the road.” said Cllr Andrew Matome.
Currently, the NGO through its members is negotiating with other bigger
companies for sponsorship such as Car
Dealers, Supermarkets, Banks and
Mines including government structures to make sustain the initiative.
The NGO is currently using code 10
driving lessons and is looking forward
to have support with trucks for code
14 driving lessons.
For more information about Xumuga
Project and Transport, contact Cllr
Andrew Matome on 073 706 4403.

Traditional handmade furniture – A SOURCE OF LIVING
A carpenter Jerry Pelo (59) uses
his hands and minds to make sure
that there’s a plate on the table
simply by creating gardening
chairs and table for his customers
who adore his art work.
J
erry Pelo lives in Oukasie Masenkeng section with his friends, he has
been there for four (4) years. Before
he moved to Oukasie, then he stayed
in Mafikeng with his uncle Lazarous
Tshipinga whom they both worked as
carpenters and made wardrobes and
cupboards. Jerry’s ambitious work of
‘Letlhaka’ cane crafting came after he
was introduced and taught by his uncle
and since then he sees the crafting as a
career to him. After being in Mafikeng
he went to Pretoria together with his
two belated brothers Mathoseni and
Jonathan.
The three met up with a white farmer
called Mr Tiens van Heerden who
inspired by their art work and brought
them to his farm in DeKroon and offered them accommodation. According to Jerry, van Heerden used to travel
with them to the veld to cut the canes.
He added that Mr van Heerden after
cutting the canes he would pay them
and they made beautiful chairs and
tables with them. “Things where a bit
hard in the farm so me and my brother
Mathoseni had to go back to Mafikeng.”
“After couple of years in Mafikeng, I
and my brother decided to come back
to Brits but my parents refused and
had to find myself a job in a construction company where alone I worked for
several months. When the company
manager informed me that the company
will be relocated to Durban, I saw it
as an opportunity to go back to Brits.”
“So I came here in Oukasie and resided
here for four years, I spent all my time
making these chairs and tables for the
people. I lost hope in our government
which is why I do things myself, I love
this job very much cause it also keep
me busy and I don’t much see my days
when growing up.” said Jerry.
Jerry took us through the making of the
beautiful chairs and table and said, “I
would use cane (Letlhaka), a sharp knife
to cut the cane, I burn the used tyres
to remove out the wires formed by the
tyre so that, I could wrap up my chairs
and tables. My last thing is that I use
my mind to create a beautiful product.”
said Jerry. He creates five set of sizes of
the chairs and tables includes rounded
and triangle tables. If there is anyone
wishing to place an order can visit Jerry
in Oukasie Masenkeng section next to
Dutch Reformed Church. His prices
range is between R30-00 and R150-00
with a guarantee of a discount for more
than four purchases.
Seating next to some of his art work while busy completing the other.

AFTER 3-DAYS OF SPECIAL PRAYERS
“HE MADE MY LIFE A SUCCESS”
As divorced mother of 2 kids, for 5 years I
went through a lot of problems financially
& worse after my divorce several men kept
breaking my heart. I nearly committed
suicide but thought of my kids. I visited
many healers & priests but got no results.
Luckily a granny from my neighbourhood
took me to ASAF. I paid R100 consultation
fee and without me speaking a word, he
showed me all my problems in a mirror
& water, plus real-faces of people who were
Didintle & Karabo
(Happy to be re-married) pulling me down.
