The responses received on these two questions are presented as Tables 1 and 2 in this chapter. In addition to this method of analysis, certain questions have been chosen and used for the purpose o f dividing the pupils into "thumbs upn and "thumbs downn groups. Pupils who answered these particular questions favorably were placed in the "thumbs upn group; those answering unfavorably were placed in the "thumbs down" group. The results of this analysis are found in Tables 3 and 4 in thiB chapter. Still another method used in analyzing the results of this study is the presentation of the results in the form of graphs which compare the favorable responses re- ceived according to sex, grade level, marks made on last I report, how well the pupil "gets along" with teachers and principal, and how often the pupil gets help and advics from parents on problems. Res-3onses Prom which these graphs were made are presented in Appendix A; the grapha themselves are presented as figures 3 through 12 in this chapter. 18 19 TABLE 1 RESPOKSES OF ALL ELEMENTARY PUPILS TO THE QUESTION: "ALL IM ALL, H a klELL SATISFIED Am YOU WITB YOUR SCHOOL?" Regardless of the t y p e of analysis, certain questions reveal high and low points of satisfaction among the pupils; these points warrant further study by the faculty. High points of satisfaction among elementary pupils are revealed through questions dealing with pupilst likes for other pupils, the amount of help received from teachers with schoolwork and social problems, pupil population, the fairness o f teachers, ana the need for money in school. Low points of satisfaction among these same pupils are brought out in the reaponses to questions dealing with lunchroom arrangements, cleanliness in the building, playground and gymnasium facilities, and treatment received from other pupils in school. High points of satisfaction among secondary pupils are shown in questions pertaining to treatment received from teachers and officials, help received from teachers with schoolwork, how much pupils a r e getting from schoolwork, density o f school population, arxi subjects offered by the school. Low potnts of satisfaction among these same pupils are shown in questions concerned with discipline, need for money In school, school equipment and facilities, and library services. SUMMARY By using the questions t h a t were Used i n determining the "thumbs up" and thumbs dam" groups, and by deriving percentages for the various item8 as l i s t e d i n the personal f a c t a sections of the elementary and aecondarg forms, c e r t a i n tendencies were noted. It was found that of those i n the elementary grades who were s a t i s f i e d lg per oent were boys while 58 per cent were g i r l s . ~ m o n gthe secondary pupils who were s a t i s f i e d 33 per cent were boys and 67 p e r cent were g i r l s . A t the same t i m e b8 percent of the elemen- t a r y b o p inventoried were s a t i s f i e d , while 01 percent of the girls were s a t i s f i e d . Among the secondarg pupils b s percent of the boys and 86 percent of the g i r l 8 were satisfied. It was a l s o noted t h a t o f the s a t i s f i e d element a r y pupils 56 percent made B or above on their report, while l& percent made below B. In the secondary grades &percent l oi the s a t i s f i e d pupils made above, while 59 percent made below B. marks of B and O f those i n the elementary grades who made marks of B and above, 81 percent were s a t i s f i e d , while b9 percent of those making 34 35 below B were s a t i s f i e d . I n the secondary group 76 per- cent of the A and €3 pupils were s a t i s f i e d and 79 percent of those below B were s a t i s f i e d . Purther examination showed t h a t of the generally s a t i s f i e d elementary pupils, 93 percent "get along" with t h e i r teachers, while o n l y 7 percent have trouble. In the secondary group, 89 pereent of the s a t i s f i e d pupila "get along" and 11 percent have trouble with t h e i r teachers. Among those in the elementary school who "get along" 78 percent were generally s a t i s f i e d , while o n l y 50 percent o f those having trouble were s a t i s f i e d . I n the secondary grades 85 percent of those who "get along" were s a t i s f i e d and o n l y 45 percent of those having trouble were satisfied. I n comparison i t was found t h a t o f the d i s s a t i s f i e d elementary pupils 60 percent were boys and girls. 40 percent were In the secondary group 62 percent of the d i s a a t i s - f i e d were boys and 3%percent were g i r l s . Of a l l those inventoried 32 percent of the boys and 19 percent of' the g i r l a were d i s s a t i s f i e d i n the elementary group, while i n the secondary group 35 percent of the boys and 14 percent of the g i r l a were diasatisfied. It was a l s o found that of the d i s s a t i e f i e d elemen- . 40 percent made marks of E and above, while 60 percent made below B. I n the secondary grades, 46 percent of t h e d i s s a t i s f i e d made A and E, while 54 percent t a r y pupils, made below B. I n the elementary group, 19 percent o f the 36 A and B pupils and 31 percent below B were d i s s a t i s f i e d ; of the A and B secondary pupils & p e r c e n t were d i s s a t i s - f i e d and of those making below B 21 percent were d i s s a t f s fied. Among the elementary pupils who were d i s s a t i s f i e d , 60 percent "get alongn w i t h t h e i r teachers, while 20 per- cent have trouble. the d i s s a t i s f i e d "get along" n i t h the cent have trouble. 54 peroent of teachers and 46 per- I n the secondary grades A t the same time 22 percent of the ale- mentary pupils who "get along" uere d i s s a t i s f i e d , and 50 percent of those having trouble were dlssatisfied. Among the secondary group 15 percent of those who "get alongn w i t h t h e i r teachers and 55 percent of those having tpouble were dissatisfied. It might be concluded t h a t the generally s a t i s f i e d pupil i s most l i k e l y t o be a g i r l who receives f a i r marks and gets along well with t h e teachers and the principal. A t the same time the s a t i s f i e d pupil does not necessarily get help and advice on personal problems from his parents. T h i s i s indicated by the f a c t that 53 percent and 57 per- cent of the s a t i s f i e d pupils i n the elementary and secondary grades respectively, seldom OF never get advice and help on personal problems from t h e i r parents. In general the percentage of s a t i s f a c t i o n indicated i n t h i s stndy is, t o a &egt.ee, satisfying. Pet, there a r e Phases-of d i s s a t i s f a c t i o n that should eliminate any 37 thought of complacency on the p a r t of' the faculty. These elements of d i s s a t i s f a c t i o n should be a challenge t o the f a c u l t y t o make f u r t h e r study and t o extend Its e f f o r t s toward the formation of policies and programs that w i l l build up a greater percentage of s a t i s f a c t i o n among the pupils. A f u r t h e r s t e p in this direction could be the inclusion of opinions that e x i s t among parents and teachers who are concerned with the welfare of the school. APPENDIXES A.
