The principal steps into the 5th grade classroom to do an unannounced walk-‐ through observation. Small groups of students are fashioning chunks of clay into a shape that will float on water. First attempts have the students’ clay sinking to the bottom of the pan of water. After testing many different shapes, sizes, and techniques, each group has a vessel that will float. Next, the students work at finding how many paper clips their vessel will hold before sinking. Students are engaged in discussions, hypotheses, and repeated testing. The principal takes the classroom teacher aside and says, “I’ll come back when you’re teaching.” Adapted from, Danielson, C. (2012). Observing classroom practice.
