Introduction
The PFM Reader enables measurement of both
water flow and pressure.
Although the device measures both flow
and pressure it can be operated in only
one mode at a time. You must select
which mode to use when first starting
the device.
Features
• Flow Measurements
(Gallons/minute or
Liters/hour)
•
•
•
•
•
•
Pressure Measurements
Using NetafimTM pressure sensors, pressure
can be measured in six different ranges,
see page 6.
Power ON/OFF
Push button for manual ON/OFF.
Automatic Power OFF
Memory Mode
When turned on the device remembers the
mode it was last used in.
Automatic Measurement
In both Flow and Pressure operation
modes the reader automatically displays
the measurement.
Low Battery Indication
When 9V battery needs replacing “LOW
BATT” is displayed.

No Pressure Indication
When in pressure mode and either no
pressure exists or a sensor is not connected,
“No Pressure” is displayed.
Version Display
The version is displayed when the device is
switched ON.
Circuit Protection
The pressure sensor is very sensitive to
reverse polarity and voltage spikes.
Protection is provided by a thermal fuse.
Power ON
Turn on the PFM Reader by pressing the
ON/OFF button.
As soon as the reader turns on the version
number is displayed.

Measuring Pressure
Only NetafimTM pressure sensors can be
used with this device.
To measure pressure:
1.
Connect the Switchcraft connector to
the PFM reader as shown.
2.
Select pressure mode and the correct
scale for the reader (see page 6). The
range for the pressure sensor is
shown on its back. It is also indicated
by the color on the heat shrink tubing
on the cable.
3.
In pressure mode, the reader
measures pressure every 5 seconds.

Measuring Flow
In flow mode, the reader recalculates the value
with the arrival of each pulse. Flow is
measured in Gallons/minute or Liters/hour.
The actual flow measurement L/h or G/m
is actually the output of the meter
according to pulses and you must adjust
the value according to your water
meter's rating.
To measure flow:
1.
Connect the water meter to the PFM
reader as shown.
2.
Select flow mode and the correct
scale for the reader (see page 6).
3.
In flow mode, the reader displays a
new value with the arrival of each
pulse.

Some water meters provide different
pulse rates. It's important to adjust the
output rating according to your water
meter's specifications.
For example:
Water meter A:
PFM measurement = 25 pulse/h
Meter output = 100 l/pulse
Flow = 25 x 100 = 2500 L/h = 2.5 m3/h
Water meter B:
PFM measurement = 25 pulse/hour
Meter output = 10 l/pulse
Flow = 250 L/h = 0.25 m3/h
Water meter C:
PFM measurement = 25 pulse/minute
Meter output = 0.1 g/pulse
Flow = 25/10 = 2.5 G/m

Selecting Mode & Scale
The device operates in two modes: Flow and
Pressure. It remembers the last mode it was
used in.
•
•
Flow can be measured in Liters/hour or
Gallons/minute.
Pressure can be measured in the following
different ranges.
The range for the pressure sensor is
shown on its back. It is also indicated by
the color of the heat shrink tubing.

OFF.
In Flow Mode:
•
•
The PFM Reader will automatically turn
itself OFF after 7 minutes if irrigation is
turned OFF.
The PFM Reader will automatically turn
itself OFF after 60 minutes if irrigation is
turned ON.
In Pressure Mode:
•
The PFM Reader will automatically turn
itself OFF after 1 minute.
You can manually turn the PFM Reader
OFF by pressing the ON/OFF button until
the reader shuts down.
