New River Valley Airport Announces “The Runway 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run” The New River Valley Airport is presenting a unique and exciting opportunity for runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages and ability: The first and only Runway 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run on the evening of Sunday, September 25th at the airport off Route 100 North of Dublin. “As part of a major construction project currently underway, the airport will need to be closed to all air traffic for a few days. This gives us an unprecedented opportunity to allow the public access to the runway and taxiway that is normally reserved for aircraft,” said Keith Holt, manager of the New River Valley Airport. “We want to take this opportunity to let runners find out what it’s like to run on a runway.” Holt adds that the airport is hosting the event in the late evening so people can run, walk, or jog with their steps illuminated by the multi-colored lights along the runway and taxiway of the airport. “This is also a great opportunity for the serious 5K runner to set a personal best time with a very fast, perfectly flat, all asphalt course, in the cool of the evening. It’s like a personal best time just waiting to happen for you.” Holt said. Registration is $20 before September 20th and $25 on race day, September 25th. A t-shirt is included for the first 100 registrations. The Fun Run is free with an optional t-shirt for $10. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Pulaski County High School Cross Country and Track & Field teams. The 1 Mile Fun Run begins at 6:30 PM with the 5K race to follow at about 7:00 PM. Participants are allowed and encouraged to stay after the race until dark to enjoy walking or jogging with the runway’s lights at their feet. There will also be music and concessions. If rain or construction delays force a postponement the event, it will be rescheduled for the following Sunday, October 2nd , at the same time. The New River Valley Airport is located at 5391 C V Jackson Lane, Dublin, VA 24084. “Since this event is part of a major construction project, it will not be repeated.” Holt emphasized. “This is your one and only chance to enjoy this unique and exciting race. “ Those interested in participating can register today by filling out and sending in the form below or finding it on the NRV Airport’s website at www.nrvairport.com.
