This document is a guide for the end user on the requirements in terms of the different types and styles available to the end user. Proper selection of eye protection for different applications is essential. The following SPI will guide in the decision of protection to be used. 3.0 REFERENCES 1) 2) 3) 4) 4.0 Sections 27 and 28 of the O.H.S.A. (Ontario) (R.S.O. 1990, REV.2009) Sections 12 and 193 (4) of the Regulations for Mines and Mining Plant (854/96) Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard No. Z94.3-07 Eye and Face Protectors American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard No. Z87.1-03 AND OR Z87.1-10 DEFINITIONS Spectacles - are frames bearing lenses worn in front of the eyes normally for vision correction or eye protection . Goggles -are forms of protective eyewear that usually enclose or protect the area surrounding the eye in order to prevent particulates, water or chemicals from striking the eyes. Ultraviolet (UV) Light - is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light, but longer than x-rays. Infrared - light is electromagnetic radiation Photo Chromic - application is color changing lenses 5.0 SPECIFICATIONS 5.1 General Requirements 5.1.1 Protective eyewear must be worn in: a) All underground operations b) All surface industrial operations THIS IS A CONTROLLED DOCUMENT. The site must complete a formal risk assessment prior to granting this exemption. 5.1.3 Side shields are required to be worn on spectacles both underground and in all surface industrial operations. Approval/Standards 5.2.1 Eye protection includes the following: a) Safety Spectacles b) Dust & Chemical Goggles c) Burning/Welding Goggles and Helmets d) Special Protection for ultraviolet or infrared rays e) Face Shields Note: All eye protection must meet the requirements of CSA Standard Z94.3-07 Eye and Face Protectors or ANSI Standard Z87.1-03 and or Z87.1-10. In all cases, manufacturer’s recommendations must be followed. 5.2.2 All spectacles purchased shall be equipped from the manufacturer with permanently affixed side shields. 5.2.3 No eye protection is to be stocked or used unless it has been approved by the Division P.P.E. Committee and the equipment meets the requirements detailed in this SPI. Eye protection may be tested provided the requirements of CSA Standard Z94.3-07 Eye and Face Protectors or ANSI Standard Z87.1-03 AND OR Z87.1-10 are met. The PPE committee is to be informed of any field-testing being conducted. Note: Glass lenses, both prescription and non-prescription are not certifiable under the C.S.A. Standard and must meet the requirements of ANSI Standard Z87.1-03 AND OR Z87.1-10. 5.2.4 Contact Lenses are not permitted in underground or surface industrial operations unless the need is certified in writing by an ophthalmologist. The letter must show consideration for the working environment in which the contact lenses are to be worn and the additional eye protection required. 5.2.5 Photo chromatic safety lenses are not permitted in the workplace. 5.2.6 Tinted Lenses are not permitted in the workplace unless authorized by the Area Manager for protection against ultraviolet or infrared rays. Tinted lenses are not to be worn indoors unless being worn at the site of a specific task where there is a need for protection from ultraviolet or infrared rays. Note: Amber lenses are not permitted, since amber lenses filter out blue light, the direct effect is to reduce the light available. 5.2.7 Wire or Steel Framed spectacles are not permitted. Only flame resistant non-conductive frames are permitted. 5.2.8 Non Prescription Safety Reader Glasses are not permitted unless prescribed by an optometrist. If the glasses are prescribed they must be obtained from our contracted providers. THIS IS A CONTROLLED DOCUMENT. Included in tip up shields are Airstream helmets. Care and Use 5.3.1 Employees are responsible to maintain their safety eyewear. 5.3.2 Lenses for prescription eyewear must be installed by a licensed optician or optometrist. 5.3.3 Lenses for non-prescription eyewear may be changed by the user. 5.3.4 Approved cleaning stations are to be installed and maintained at all lunchrooms, first aid rooms and change houses. REVISIONS This SPI should be reviewed as required when the referenced standards or regulatory requirements change; a formal review shall be required within three years of the effective date.
