SAFE PRACTICE INSTRUCTION NUMBER 8-3 ISSUE 2 SUBJECT: EYE PROTECTION EFFECTIVE: April 2008 APPROVED VICE PRESIDENT, SUPPORT SERVICES SCOPE This Safe Practice Instruction encompasses all employees at all Cessna facilities that are required to wear any type of eye protection in the course of their job. This includes employees assigned to work in areas requiring eye protection, visiting employees, contract workers, or any visitor entering any area requiring eye protection for any reason. Questions can be directed to: Cessna Safety and Environmental Departments ORGANIZATION COMPONENTS AFFECTED All locations of Cessna Aircraft Company and its subsidiaries. RESPONSIBILITIES A. Each Manager, Foreman, and Supervisor shall implement and enforce all aspects of this Safe Practice Instruction. B. Each employee, contract worker, or visitor shall follow every aspect of this Safe Practice Instruction. C. Employees failing to comply with this SPI will face disciplinary action in accordance with Cessna Aircraft Company policy and procedures. Contract workers and visitors who fail to comply will be subject to exclusion from the area. WHEN EYE PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) IS REQUIRED 1.0 All eye protective equipment shall meet requirements of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard Z87.1. 1.1 Employees working in office areas are not required to wear protective eye wear while at their workstations. 1.2 Safety glasses with side shields are required for anyone walking/traveling in all manufacturing, warehousing or service areas, including aisle ways unless the aisle way or area is specifically exempted by the Safety Department. 1.3 Each affected employee shall wear appropriate eye protection when hazards from flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids or caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapors are present, or when potentially injurious light radiation exists. This eye protection shall provide side protection when there is a hazard from flying objects. Detachable side protectors (i.e. clip on or slide-on side shields) meeting the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standard 1910.133 (a) (2) are acceptable. 1.4 1.3.1 Employees engaged in drilling or grinding operations at shoulder height and above shall wear goggles. 1.3.2 Employees working with corrosive chemicals or at risk from chemicals dropping onto their face shall wear a chemical resistant goggle. Each affected employee wearing prescription lenses while engaged in operations involving eye hazards shall wear eye protection that incorporates the prescription in its design, or shall wear eye protection over the prescription lenses. Wearers of contact lenses are required to wear appropriate eye protection devices SAFE PRACTICE INSTRUCTION NUMBER 8-3 SUBJECT: EYE PROTECTION ISSUE 2 EFFECTIVE: April 2008 while engaged in operations involving eye hazards. It should be recognized that dusty and/or chemical environments might present an additional hazard to contact lens wearers. 1.6 Photo chromic lenses shall not be worn by employees operating vehicles that pass from outdoors to indoors because the color fading process of the lens is not instantaneous or considered protection in hazardous optical radiation environments. 1.7 Shaded lenses with shade of more than level 1 (any tint) are not acceptable for indoor use unless safety considerations dictate a darker shade (specifically selected and approved eye protection for use in extremely bright light conditions, such as welder's hoods while welding or tinted goggles for use while performing torch soldering or brazing, or work with a laser). 1.8 Employees needing eye protection from light radiation should use the following guidelines for the selection of the appropriate lens tint. HELMET & EYEWEAR FILTER SHADE SELECTION As Recommended By ANSI And OSHA Standards Operation Suggested Shade Number* Shielded Metal-Arc Welding up to 5/32 in. However, the degree of protection from radiant energy afforded by the filter plate or lens when chosen to allow visual acuity will still remain in excess of the needs of eye filter protection. 1.9 "Mirror-surface" lenses are not acceptable in any application at Cessna, indoors or outdoors. CLEANING, CARE AND FITTING OF EYE PROTECTION 2.0 Managers, supervisors and foremen are responsible for appropriate training requirements for eye protection for employees working in their departments. 2.1 Consideration should be given to the comfort and fit of eye protection equipment. Devices that fit poorly will not afford the protection for which they were designed. Prescription eyewear needs to be fitted by qualified personnel. 2.2 Eye Protection should be cleaned according to the manufacturer's instructions. If no instructions are available, clean the PPE with a mild soap and warm water solution by soaking the device in a soap solution maintained at 120oF for ten minutes. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry. Eyeglass cleaning stations are available throughout Cessna facilities containing a silicone-free cleaning agent and wipes. 2.3 Employees should make a visual inspection of their PPE prior to each use. Protective devices that exhibit broken parts, heat distortion, or excessive scratches on the lens are unsuitable for use and should not be worn. 2.4 Eye protection may be obtained through departmental PPE ordering procedures. Prescriptions glasses may be purchased from Mid-West Lens (Truck) or through your optometrist as long as they are Ansi Z87.1.
