Chip-Scale Transformers Reduce Size, Power, and Cost
The ADuM130x/ADuM140x family of triple-/quad-channel isolators eliminates the
need for multiple optocouplers and their accompanying external discrete components.
Based on Analog Devices’ patented iCoupler® technology, these multichannel devices
use chip-scale transformers rather than LEDs and phototransistors to convey data
across an isolation barrier. The ADuM130x/ADuM140x products operate from 1/10
to 1/70 the power, without the need for external components to drive LEDs or to bias
output transistors. These devices also operate at higher data rates, offer better timing
accuracy, and provide better common-mode transient immunity than optocoupler
devices. Approved by UL, CSA, and VDE, the ADuM130x/ADuM140x family is an ideal
solution for most multichannel isolation applications.
iCoupler Technology
Each ADuM130x/ADuM140x device consists of three dice assembled in a common SOIC package. Bond wires carry encoded
digital input signals from the inputs to the planar, chip-scale transformers located in the center die. Each transformer supports
a given isolation channel. Depending on the communication direction, these transformers convey the encoded signals from top
coil to bottom coil or vice versa. High voltage insulation between the top and bottom transformer coils is provided by polyimide
layers between the coils. Additional bond wires carry the coupled encoded signals from the transformers to receive circuitry
located in one of the outer die (the location depends on the direction of communication).
This patented approach to digital isolation offers the beneficial isolation properties of optocouplers, yet provides substantial
improvements in terms of integration, data rate, timing accuracy, and common-mode transient immunity. These benefits are
realized at lower power levels and over a wider range of temperatures, and supply voltages than those of optocouplers.
The ADuM130x/ADuM140x family provides five different channel configurations, each with three performance grades.
