I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the wonderful work of Ys in some of the world’s most challenging conditions. This simply would not be possible without the generosity of those who give to World Service. Jack Lund, President/Chief Executive Officer, YMCA of Greater New York Philippines YMCA 2012 World Service Campaign Report DEAR FRIENDS OF WORLD sERVICE, We present this report to you with gratitude and a great appreciation for your commitment to strengthening communities worldwide. As supporters of the YMCA mission, we share a core belief that every person deserves an opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. With your help, so many more people worldwide are accessing the life-changing Y programs and resources to develop their skills and talents for a productive and rewarding life. Together, in 2012, we raised more than $1.3 million for World Service to strengthen the initiatives and sustainability of YMCAs in 34 countries and four YMCA Area Alliances. Last year, World Service helped improve more than a million lives through programs focused on strengthening spirit, mind and body. In this report, we share a few of the countless examples of how the power of global collaboration and leadership can have a direct impact on youth and families in every corner of the world. Thank you for your generous support of the World Service Campaign and for your continued commitment to helping people create a better future for themselves and their families. Sincerely, Pamela Davies Chair, International Committee YMCA of the USA Board of Directors 5 6 World Service Changes Lives OVERVIEW OF WORLD sERVICE WHAT IS WORLD SERVICE? YMCAs in 119 countries work every day—often in challenging social, economic and political environments— to offer people the support they need to create a better future for themselves and their families. Each year, YMCA of the USA’s World Service raises and distributes funds to help Ys become stronger and better able to respond to the critical social issues that are keeping people from reaching their potential. In many communities around the world, the YMCA is the only place where people can access the tools and resources to create a better life for themselves and their families. Universally, YMCAs know the issues impacting their community because they are an integral part of the community. Ys have the understanding, expertise and local connections to develop the innovative, impactful programs and services, which move people and communities forward. World Service partners with Ys around the globe to make sure that they have the resources to deliver these life-changing programs to the people who need them the most. Ys in the United States play a major role in the campaign by contributing their expertise and financial resources to raise awareness of and support for World Service-funded programs. Thousands of Y professionals, volunteers, retirees and friends contribute their time, talent and support to strengthen the impact of the global Y Movement. This collective effort is an expression of the Y’s mission-driven commitment to promote positive social change by giving all people the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Founded in 1889, World Service is a part of the YMCA of the USA International Group. For more information, visit ymca.net/world-service or call 800 872 9622. Below are a few examples of how your generous support has created lasting change in communities worldwide. • Strong, self-reliant YMCAs around the world are better equipped to deliver responsive, innovative and sustainable programs. Through local U.S. Ys and World Service support, the Haiti YMCA is having a tremendous impact on communities devastated by the 2010 earthquake. After the earthquake, the Haiti YMCA has been a lifeline to the community while simultaneously rebuilding its programs and facilities. Once the Haiti YMCA finished its emergency response phase, which supported more than 5,000 families, it focused on improving its internal practices to better serve the community in the long-term. More than two years later, the Haiti Y is one of the few nonprofits in the region that is fully functioning. It opened new local branches (built out of earthquake- and hurricane-resistant shipping containers) and is beginning to raise annual campaign support from Haitian individuals and businesses. It has emerged stronger than ever and is providing hope and new beginnings to those affected by the disaster. • Millions of people worldwide lack access to basic medical services and low-income individuals are especially vulnerable. The Liberia YMCA is responding by giving young people the information and resources to reach their full potential. The YMCA Youth Drop-in Center offers HIV/AIDS prevention and education, basic medical services and adolescent reproductive health outreach to 27,000 young people. A national leader in outdoor programming, the Liberia YMCA also uses a camp setting to help youth build the skills and confidence to help them make positive choices. According to Edward, the CEO of the Liberia YMCA, “World Service support helped us to rehabilitate YMCA Camp Todee, the only resident camp in the country. Camp Todee meets an unmet need for clean and safe spaces for young people to have fun while learning new skills.” Liberia YMCA Haiti YMCA • Globally, the Y is a place where young people can “World Service is important to the HAITI YMCA because from 2010-2012, it helped us to successfully offer exceptional and meaningful programs and activities for youth designed to strengthen their spirit, mind and body, while continuing to strengthen the structure of the organization. Thank you.” Gwenael Apollon, National General Secretary, Haiti YMCA belong, find their voice and become confident leaders in their community. The Armenia YMCA’s youth leadership and service-learning programs help participants to develop conflict resolution skills while learning about building community collaborations and networks. As part of the program, hundreds of young people work with governmental and nongovernmental organizations every year to implement projects on gender education, anti-corruption, civic education and community integration. Tatul, a Youth Leader said, “If it weren’t for the YMCA, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.” Many also go on to serve as 10 World Service Changes Lives YMCA camp counselors, overseeing programs that foster peace and provide social and educational services to children, youth and adults, with a special emphasis on refugee populations. World Service support ensures that the Armenia YMCA can train more counselors to serve internally displaced communities. Armenia YMCA • Ys worldwide use recreation, camping and the arts to promote physical, mental, social and spiritual development. Young people strengthen their leadership skills and multicultural understanding while building the self-confidence to overcome peer pressure and make healthy choices. Young people from diverse backgrounds are brought together in an effort to promote understanding and peace in troubled regions. Lisa, a youth participant and volunteer leader at the Russia YMCA said, “When the YMCA came into my life, I started to develop as a person and improve my character. I met wonderful people, learned to work in a team and took part in training sessions aimed at raising mutual trust and harmonious teamwork.” • Access to quality education is critical to break • The ability to earn an income is critical to family and community stability. Through its Entrepreneurship Program, the Senegal YMCA helps people learn business skills and obtain small micro-credit loans. Through the Y, Binta, a 29-year-old mother of three, had the knowledge and resources to start a business. As the new owner and manager of a successful shop, Binta is proud to say that she repaid her loan within six months and credits her success to the YMCA. Jean, the CEO of the Senegal YMCA said, “World Service allows our YMCA to have a positive impact on the people of Senegal. With World Service funds, we are able to invest in innovative programs which help individuals get a fair opportunity at securing income for their families.” Senegal YMCA the cycle of poverty. Unfortunately, many young people worldwide cannot afford school or the programs that provide the foundational skills and training to obtain a good job. The Cambodia YMCA is responding by offering values-based academic and leadership development programs to more than 500 vulnerable youth—including street children—who otherwise could not afford such opportunities. World Service support helps the Cambodia YMCA give kids from the slums access to an education and a daily meal. Trang visited the Cambodia YMCA as part of the Long Beach YMCA’s exchange and said, “I was able to witness firsthand, the incredible impact of the Cambodian Y’s Street Children School Project. This program provides a learning space and other critical services to some of the most disadvantaged young people in the community. Without World Service, the Cambodia YMCA wouldn’t be able to reach as many kids with these life-changing services.” Cambodia YMCA 2012 World Service Campaign Report 11 YMCA-to-YMCA PARTNERSHIPS AND RELATIONSHIPS Arizona Connecticut Idaho Prescott YMCA of Yavapai County Agua Prieta, Mexico Juarez, Mexico Central Connecticut Coast YMCA Baire Marie, Romania Bucharest, Romania Tallinn, Estonia YMCA of Boise Itapeva, Sao Paulo, Brazil Valley of the Sun YMCA Baja California, Mexico Mexico City, Mexico colOmbia Greater Waterbury Family YMCA Teen Camp Exchange, Denmark YMCA of southern arizona Mexico City, Mexico Mexico Border Coalition Haiti California Berkeley YMCA Baja California, Mexico YMCA of Greater Long Beach National Council—Cambodia Baja California, Mexico Banjul, Gambia YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles Nagoya, Japan Baja California, Mexico YMCA of Orange County Baja California, Mexico YMCA of San Diego County National Council—South Africa Baja California, Mexico Sao Paulo, Brazil YMCA of San Francisco National Council—Spain Hong Kong, China Shanghai, China Osaka, Japan Baja California, Mexico Taipei, Taiwan YMCA of Silicon Valley Taichung, Taiwan Thainan, Taiwan Colorado YMCA of Metropolitan Denver Mexico YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region Montevideo, Uruguay COLOMBIA YMCA of the rockies russia spain New Britain-Berlin YMCA National Council—Armenia Krakow, Poland New CANAAN YMCA PERU YMCA of Greater Hartford National Council—South Africa Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Jerusalem International YMCA Novosibirsk, Russia D.C. YMCA members and friends have a long history of making bequests and planned gifts to support World Service and the international work of the YMCA. A planned gift is a simple and flexible way to combine charitable giving with sound financial planning. In fact, there are many ways for you to use planned giving opportunities to strengthen the work of the global YMCA Movement, support life-changing programs and realize significant financial and tax benefits for you and your loved ones. Your bequest or planned gift makes you eligible for membership in the YMCA of the USA Global Legacy Society. This is YMCA of the USA’s way of formally recognizing your support of our mission through your estate planning and thanking you for your generosity. We welcome the opportunity to discuss your goals and tell you more about the important international work of YMCA of the USA. For information on how to complete your estate planning to benefit Y-USA’s International Work, please contact your professional adviser and Mary Tikalsky, Director, World Service, YMCA of the USA, at 312 419 8371 or mary.tikalsky@ymca.net.
