Measuring Natural Light with Color Rendering
CRI measures how faithfully a light source renders specific reference colors
compared to how those colors are rendered by a natural light source, typically a
blackbody radiator.
If each color point is reproduced identically to the reference, then the CRI is
100. Any deviation for any color point results in a CRI of less than 100.
The first 8 color samples are used to calculate the general color rendering
index, Ra. For more precise evaluation of color rendering and natural colors,
all 15 color samples should be evaluated. R13 and R15 in particular are
important for making people with different skin tones look healthy and happy.

Color related checklist for LED luminaires
• Every luminaire should have specifications for initial color
consistency and color consistency over time, including the reliability
data and warranty.
– The color consistency specification should be suitable for your application.
• The color rendering index (CRI) should include all 15 test colors.
CRI (Ra) based only on the first 8 colors will not provide information
about rendering of skin tones or saturated colors like reds and blues.
– Be sure to check R9 and R15 numbers for the most natural light.
• Light source portfolio should include common correlated color
temperatures (CCT) including 2700K, 3000K, 3500K and 4000K.
