here’s something about Ocean City, N.J.
Anticipation builds as you get closer. Asphalt and shopping
malls give way to an expanse of green as you pass through the
coastal forest. The air gets cooler on a fresh sea breeze and
backseat fidgeting is suspended when the kids realize
you’re on final approach.
Then, you come around a curve and your eyes land on jewels
of sunlight dancing on the bay. Fishing boats bob on the waves
as Jet-Skis slalom between them. In the distance, the Ferris
wheel makes its endless journey. Excitement rushes through
the car. You’re only minutes from your destination – fun and
sun in America’s Greatest Family Resort.
The sea, the sand, the Boardwalk – wide, handsome avenues
lined with pretty homes, unique shops, restaurants and comfortable hotels. It’s the Jersey Shore’s charming, family-friendly,
fun vacation paradise.
You’ve arrived.

City tends to be more temperate than inland. It’s cooler in summer and warmer in
winter. Nights can get chilly by the sea, even
in the hottest part of summer, so pack long
trousers and a sweatshirt or two for evening
deck and Boardwalk excursions.

Winter
Ocean City’s eight miles of white-sand
beaches are a favorite for enjoying time in
the sun and surf. Beach tags are required to
use the beach in-season and swimming is
permitted only at guarded beaches. See
more in the Beach section.
Alcoholic beverages
Founded by Methodists as a seaside religious retreat, one legacy of that history is
Ocean City’s status as a “dry” town. Alcohol
is not sold on the island and alcohol consumption is prohibited in all public places,
including the beach. Package goods stores
are located within a short distance of
the island.

cean City’s award-winning white sand
beach stretches nearly eight miles from
the Great Egg Harbor Inlet to the north
and south to Corson’s Inlet State Park.
Clean, expansive and beautiful – it’s no
wonder the Travel Channel named
Ocean City’s beach #1 in the region. That
puts Ocean City in the illustrious company
of places like Mauna Kea, Hawaii; Horseshoe Bay,
Bermuda and Barcelona, Spain.
Each region has its own
unique character – the
quiet, picturesque beaches
of the Gardens District in
the north; the buzz beside
the Boardwalk; rolling dunes
framing majestic homes in
the south end; and the quiet
beauty of Corson’s Inlet,
where rare seabirds nest
and anglers work the surf
overlooking Strathmere and
Sea Isle City.

the

F
irst-time visitors to Ocean City, N.J.
are struck by the incredible diversity
of its neighborhoods. Every corner of
town is vibrant with its own look and
feel – the architecture, activity and natural
backdrop combining into a special vibe.
With its white sand beaches, Boardwalk bustle, quaint shopping, charming, tree-lined streets and quiet fishing spots,
each Ocean City neighborhood offers its own brand of
sights, sounds and diversions.
By car, by foot or by bike – around every turn lies another
landscape to explore and a new treasure to discover.
The Boardwalk
The mind-boggling variety of attractions on Ocean City’s
Boardwalk has made it a family vacation favorite since the
first planks were nailed down back in the 1880s.
The boards have been moved around and rebuilt almost
continuously since those early days. Stretching from 1st to
23rd Street, today’s Boardwalk is two and a half miles of
clean, well-maintained attractions for fun-lovers of every age
– with amusement rides, arcades, miniature golf, traditional
seaside snacks, casual dining and eclectic shopping.

17
Whether you’re eating your way from one
end to the other or taking a brisk walk to
burn off the calories, the Boardwalk is also
Ocean City’s entertainment central. In the
summer months, you’ll encounter live music
both on the boards and at the Music Pier,
magicians, clowns and other strolling entertainers, art shows, parades (for people and
pets) – even karaoke competitions. See the
Events Calendar to learn more.
South of 14th Street, the Boardwalk takes on
markedly different ambience. The boards bisect a wide dune field and the majestic quiet
of some of the city’s most beautiful backyard
gardens. It’s a stunning place to stroll.
18
The Boardwalk remains a spot to see and be
seen – a scenic platform where both vacationers and locals stroll, jog, bike, shop,
snack and play while taking in the salt air
and breathtaking beauty of Ocean City’s
blue sea and sky.
Downtown
With more than 100 shops and restaurants
open year-round on Asbury Avenue between
6th and 11th Streets, Ocean City’s business
and retail district a uniquely American mainstreet community.
In an era with so many Main Streets abandoned in the shadow of the big-box mall,

Ocean City’s business district remains a destination. It’s a manicured and pedestrianfriendly neighborhood with a collection of
shops and one-of-a-kind boutiques – each
with a unique personality.
Like the Boardwalk, Asbury Avenue has its
own schedule of special events and entertainment, including the famous spring and
fall Block Parties, live music, kids’ activities
and a parade of parades – including the
one-of-a-kind Doo Dah Parade, celebrating
the end of tax season each April. See the
Events Calendar to learn more.
The Bay and Marina District
Ocean City’s sugar-sand ocean beaches tell
only half the story. On the western coast, a
system of bays, lagoons and estuaries separate our barrier island from the mainland.
It’s a landscape of calm waters, wildlife and
expanses of color framed by stately dockfront homes, boaters, water skiers, fishermen and picture-postcard sunsets.
It’s where you can grab a bite, rent a Jet-Ski,
climb aboard a party boat for some deepsea fishing, take a pleasure cruise around
the island or find just the right piece of gear
you need for a fishing excursion or sailing
adventure. And there are plenty of spots to
drop a fishhook or crab line.
T O W N
North End
Known as The Gardens, the neighborhoods
of Ocean City’s northern tip are quiet and
beautiful, with curving streets lined with
handsome homes in a diversity of architectural styles.
Overlooking Great Egg Harbor Inlet, with
dramatic views of Atlantic City, the beaches
here are wide and peaceful. Traffic is lighter
in this part of town, making it a pleasant
place to hike or bike in search of some solitude, a bite to eat, a new piece of beach
gear or a vantage point to watch the surfers
dancing on the waves.
South End
Largely residential, Ocean City’s south end
also has its share of nifty shops and cafés.
Wide avenues make it a favorite for bicyclists – and nature lovers flock south on
their way to Corson’s Inlet State Park, a picturesque area of unspoiled, undeveloped
beach and dunes on the island’s southern
tip. See the Stuff to Do section for more.
In the middle of town, the bay and lagoons become the site of an Ocean City
summer tradition, the festive celebration
of Night in Venice, one of the world’s
largest boat parades.
Here, too, you’ll find the Bayside Center, a
historic home converted into a museum
and institute of study devoted to the back
bays. See the Stuff to Do section for
more information.

Flip, roll, shoot or dance
So many games, so little time. If arcade and video games are your

10-cent skee-ball to the season’s hottest, newest 3D graphics – if

Boating/Watersports
With miles of both ocean and bay coastline, there’s no shortage of ways to have
fun in and on the waters surrounding
Ocean City. With ever-changing conditions
of temperature, light and waves – the challenges and rewards are many for surfers,
anglers, boaters, swimmers and other
aquatic fun seekers.
Getting your bearings
The Atlantic faces the eastern coast of the
island. On the western side, the Intracoastal
Waterway winds its way through the area’s
many creeks, lagoons and bay coves.
T O
D O
Sailing
Here’s your chance to learn the ropes or
better your skills putting wind to canvas.
Rentals and lessons and sailing camps are
available for every level of sailor, adults
and kids.
Baycats offers sailboat and kayak rentals,
guided kayak tours, lessons and sailing
camps. See ad on page 30 or visit the website at baycats.com. Sailing camps are also
operated through the Ocean City Sailing
Foundation, ocsailingfoundation.org.
To download marine charts of the area
online, visit nauticalcharts.noaa.gov.
Small craft
The back bays and creeks offer countless
opportunities for navigating flat, placid waters by water ski, tube, kayak, small boat or
personal watercraft. The rolling surf on the
ocean side offers more of a challenge for the
adventurous. A variety of craft is available
for rental throughout the city.
Charter boats
Larger fishing vessels also work the waters
around Ocean City. With a group charter or
party boat, hugging the coast or working the
ridges and canyons farther out – the experienced and knowledgeable captain and crew
will help you land the big one.
Pleasure cruising
Sightseeing by water is another way to take
in the natural beauty of the New Jersey
seashore around Ocean City. Several tour
operators serve the island.

Parasailing
Boat launches
Towed by motorboat, a tethered parachute
puts you on an airborne perch for an incredible birds-eye view of the island and its surroundings. It’s a ride you won’t soon forget.
Two boat ramps serve the island. The municipal boat ramp is located on the bay at
Tennessee Avenue between 22nd and 23rd
Streets. There you can also pick up supplies, bait, ice, refreshments and ice cream.
The ramp is in operation April 1 to October
31. Launch fees are $10 daily or $100 for
the season • (609) 525-9289
Surfing
When the surf’s up, surfers flock to the
clean, white-sand beaches to put their skills
to the test. That’s a board meeting, Ocean
City style. Surfing is permitted at Waverly
Boulevard and at 7th and 16th Streets. (See
the Beach section for details.) Check the
local surf shops for wave reports, board
srentals and lessons, too.
At the island’s southern tip, the state operates a boat launch at Corson’s Inlet State
Park. The ramp is in operation year-round.
Fees are charged Memorial Day to Labor
Day, $10 daily or $55 for the season.

Fishing
The fresh breeze and clean waters surrounding Ocean City also combine to generate excellent conditions for windsurfing
and kitesurfing.

Safety first
Wearing a USCG-approved personal flotation
device is required for both operators and passengers in the waters off the New Jersey coast.

Something fishy is going on here. In fact a lot
fishy is going on here! Ocean City is in prime
position for some of the most thrilling and
challenging sportfishing in the East – plus
there are plenty of spots for more casual anglers to drop a line and try their luck. From
bluefish to weakfish and lots in between, the
action goes virtually year-round.

4 HR. BACK BAY FISHING
You do not need a license to fish the saltwater surrounding Ocean City, but fishing is
subject to quotas, size limits and other regulations. Licenses are required for harvesting
clams and other shellfish. You’ll find all the
information you need in the New Jersey Fish
and Wildlife Digest, available at local bait
shops and tackle dealers. Online, learn
more at nj.gov/dep/fgw.
45' Twin Engine Pontoon Boat
Surf fishing is allowed:
2 trips daily
• Anytime on unguarded beaches
• Anytime Corson’s Inlet State Park on the
island’s southern tip
• On guarded beaches before and after lifeguards are on duty
Fun close to shore
Anglers working the surf land bluefish,
flounder, sea bass, tautog (blackfish), kingfish, shark and the famous striped bass
(rockfish). Fisherman flock to the beach
during the “blitz,” when stripers pass
through by the thousand, following schools
of bunker. Spring and autumn bluefish runs
are equally dramatic, as the feeding reaches
frenzy proportions.
In the bays and creeks, weakfish (sea trout)
are a favorite quarry, along with sea bass,
“snapper” blues, croaker and flounder. Just
north of town, parts of the old Longport
bridge has been converted to a fishing pier.
And south of town the Ocean Drive/Rush
Chattin bridge was designed specially to accommodate anglers.
The tasty blueclaw crab is easy to catch with
line or trap in the backbays and creeks. Kids
love outsmarting the feisty crustaceans. Ask
the bait shop for a rundown on size limits.

New Jersey’s offshore waters are world famous for spine-tingling sportfishing action.
Above the ridges, canyons, wrecks and

The New Jersey seashore is an absolute paradise for nature lovers. If you keep your eyes

the beach. Beyond the beach, Ocean City
offers several unique vantage points for absorbing the beauty of the outdoors.

exquisitely hand carved fireplaces; or privately tuck yourself away in
the meticulously decorated guest quarters. The home is a magnificent step
back into an era of grandeur. Simple, yet stately. Splendid, but a place you
can call home. For over a century , travelers know and admire the
Plymouth Inn for its warmth, its open doors, its rooms with the summer
sun beaming through the many walls of windows. This charming seashore
resort is the perfect place for your summer vacation.
One block from beach, boardwalk, bike rental, water park.
Fully air -conditioned and cable television in all rooms.
Family suites available; Beach tags with refundable deposit.
Breakfast consisting of blueberry, chocolate chips, or buttermilk
pancakes, crispy Belgian waffles, golden brown French toast, or
fresh eggs. Complimented by just-baked muffins, warm fruit cobbler,
assorted bagels & cream cheese, cereals, fresh fruit,
specialty teas, brewed coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice.
Capture the memories of summer in Ocean City by making the
Plymouth Inn your own vacation home.

A
It’s all here. Ocean City’s neighborhoods are
chocked with eateries of every style. With so
many culinary offerings to explore, you’ll
never go hungry here.
Ocean City remains a “dry” town, a legacy
of its founding as a religious retreat. Of
course, for adults 21 and older, you can
enjoy libations in the privacy of your home
or room – you just have to plan ahead.
Package goods stores are located within
five minutes of city limits.
Boardwalk
The Boardwalk has a lot of everything – all
within view of the postcard backdrop of the
rolling surf. For something quick: handthrown pizza, pork roll sandwiches, steaks,
burgers, dogs or sausage. Sit down for
breakfast by the beach or an affordable family meal, a gourmet hamburger, pasta,
lighter salads or seafood. The choices are
mind-boggling. And few places on earth
have so many ways to satisfy the sweet
tooth, with ice cream, fruit smoothies, funnel
cakes, water ice, handmade candy, donuts
and caramel popcorn. You can go back on
your diet tomorrow, right?

Downtown
The menu of menu choices is impressive on
Asbury Avenue between 6th and 11th
streets and in the surrounding blocks. A
walk down the Avenue unearths dozens of
culinary treasures, from gourmet to get-itand-go, pizza, subs, sweets and coffee.
By the bay
On the western bayshore, you’ll find full
breakfast by the picturesque docks of the
bay, seafood, family dining – plus ice cream
and other sweet treats. There’s lots of free
parking and it’s a picturesque place to stroll
or take a bike ride in pursuit of a memorable meal.
North End/South End
More variety awaits in the quiet neighborhoods of the South and North Ends.
Breakfast places and cafes, subs, steaks,
burgers, seafood, ethnic and sweets – some
served al fresco in the open air.

Ocean City is complete without a

Whether you’re a dyedin-the-wool shopaholic
or just enjoy browsing
for the out-of-the-ordinary, Ocean
City’s shops and boutiques satisfy
any craving – from apparel to fine
art, crafts, jewelry, furnishings, antiques,
souvenirs, gifts and handmade curiosities.
Many of Ocean City’s stores are one-of-a-kind, with very specialized inventory. And throughout town, shopkeepers deliver that special brand of friendly,
one-on-one service that has become something of a lost art.
Downtown
With over 100 shops and restaurants packed in just a few blocks, Asbury Avenue between 6th and 11th Streets and the side streets are home to shopping that’s interesting and fun. It’s a world you can easily get lost in (willingly
of course.) Many downtown boutiques and stores are open year round.
Boardwalk
We all know the Boardwalk as an eater’s paradise. Turns out it’s a shopper’s
dream, too. Tucked in between the arcades, miniature golf, rides and cafes
are dozens of shops catering to shoppers of every age and interest. Little is
left out, from surfboards, flip-flops and beach gear to souvenirs, T-shirts,

On the bay side, take a stroll along the bay

North end/South end
The northern and southern neighborhoods

avenues and quiet, tree-line streets. Shopping by bicycle is a favorite way to pass
the time here.

History
of Ocean City
O
cean City’s history is a rich tapestry of
events stretching back to the late
19th century.
Years before the first European settlers
dubbed it “Peck’s Beach,” the island was
a summer fishing camp for native Leni-
Lenape people and also served as a grazing
land for cattle driven from the mainland. The
barrier island of dunes, meadows, beach and
cedar swamps likely took its first name from
John Peck, who used the island as a staging
area for his shore-based whaling operation.
Original ownership of the land is traced to the family of
Richard Somers, one of America’s first naval heroes.
Only an intrepid few made their homes here, as getting
on and off the island was exclusively by water.
The seeds of a future city were sown in 1879, when
four Methodist ministers saw in Peck’s Beach the ideal
place to establish a Christian retreat and camp meeting. Ezra B. Lake, James Lake, S. Wesley Lake and
William Burrell coined the name “Ocean City,” laid out
a street grid, built utilities and sold lots for cottages, hotels and businesses.

The first building of what would become the
Tabernacle was finished in 1881, along with
the island’s first school. The first bridge went
up in 1883 and the railroad soon followed,
bringing both the devout in search of religious retreat and vacationers seeking solace
from the noise and grime of the city.
Since those early days, Ocean City has
transformed itself into “America’s Greatest
Family Resort,” a top-rated vacation destination. The Tabernacle is still a dynamic place
for praise and worship. The legacy of the
founders also remains in the absence of

liquor sales within the city limits. Its status
as a “dry” town is one important reason
Ocean City has become a family favorite.
To learn more, visit the Historic Museum at
17th St. & Simpson Ave. The entire timeline
is cataloged and preserved there: the growth
of the early city and Boardwalk, the 1901
wreck of the four-masted Sindia, the 1927
fire and the battle over “Blue Laws” – Ocean
City has remained a sought-after vacation
destination through all the economic and
political changes Americans have seen over
the past 130 years.
