Textbook: Physics (Vol. 1), 5th Ed., by Resnick, Halliday, and Krane (John Wiley & Sons, 2002). Homework: Exercises and problems will be assigned from the textbook for each Chapter. Your solutions will NOT be collected, but many of the exam questions will be based on the homework. Students are expected to do the homework in a timely manner and use office hours for questions on homework and lecture material. Solutions to the homework will be posted on the course website. Quizzes: There will be about 12 quizzes given during the semester. Each quiz will cover one chapter. Quizzes will be given during the first 20 minutes of lecture. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped! No formulas will be provided. Quizzes will be closed book and closed notes, but calculators are allowed. Make-up quizzes will not be given. Examinations: There will be 3 exams during the semester and 1 final exam. Exams will be closed book, but calculators are allowed and formula sheets will be provided. If you get into a car accident on your way to the exam, you must bring me a copy of the police report. Make-up exams must be taken within 5 days of the missed exam. No exceptions!!! The course grade will be determined as follows: Grading Scale: 100% - 88% 87% - 77% 76% - 65% 64% - 55% 54% - 0% A B C D F Laboratory reports: Quizzes: 3 Exams: 1 Final Exam: 15% 13% 54% (18% each) 18% Honesty: Any form of academic dishonesty will result in a zero grade for the assignment. The following things are forms of cheating: Faking data on labs, using unauthorized materials on a test, and giving a false reason for an absence. Student Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to: 1. State the basic principles of mechanics, fluids, and waves, define important scientific terms in these areas, and give a written or oral explanation of how they apply to real-life situations. 2. Use algebra, trigonometry, and calculus to solve problems involving the laws of mechanics, fluids, and waves. 3. Conduct simple experiments using standard scientific methods, evaluate the resulting data, and construct a scientific conclusion.
