Mom on the Mend,
No More Aches, and Torn Pants
with Father Michael
Happy Mother’s Day!
This Mother’s Day will have a different flavor for me. Mom is in rehab which is an
important step in her returning back home. She had a hospital stay of over a week
to deal with the effects of severe dehydration. She came a remarkably long way
from when she first got there. She made a dramatic improvement last Sunday. I
am so appreciative to the many of you who promised your prayers for her. We can
never underestimate the power of prayer. Thank you for your support and
concern.
I am happy to report that I am really doing fine after my unfortunate encounter
last week with a Suzuki in the crosswalk. My initial assessment was good as they
found no broken bones or head injuries. I only had to deal with aches and pains,
and at this point they are pretty much gone. Another visit or two to the chiropractor
and I will be dancing up the aisle. Again, I am most appreciative to all of you for
your prayers and concern for me. Aside from it being a frightening experience with
some inconvenience, I was very fortunate.
There were two details I did not share with you last weekend. When I fell to the
ground apparently my right leg was resting in an unusual position. Of course I was
told to stay still, but they needed to assess my leg. So, they ended up cutting off
the right leg of my pants right there in the parking lot. I understand it was
necessary, but I was looking to make a bold fashion statement at that moment.
Somehow, in the midst of all that happened I am very sad over the loss of a good
pair of pants☺. Also, as the EMTs were putting the neck brace on me they made
me smile when they pointed out that they were putting “a collar on a collar.” I’ll
take the little white I wear any day.
Thank you for your generosity in the special collection for the work of the
missions through the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. We were blessed to
have Sr. Rosemary Hayes with us. The total raised was approximately $5,400.
This Wednesday I leave with 33 traveling companions on our trip to Colorado and
New Mexico. I am confident it is going to be a great adventure. We will be seeing
some beautiful sights of nature as well as holy and sacred places along the way.
We leave at 5:15 on Wednesday morning if any of you would like to come and
wish us well.

SPECIAL PARISH ACTIVITY!
Don’t Forget Your Baby Bottle!
On Mother’s Day weekend, May 10th & 11th, the Parish of the Holy Cross is
hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long
Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women
and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. They provide
maternity housing, medical care, referrals, cribs, car seats, diapers and
ALL other baby items that are needed. We are asking that you pick up a
baby bottle and fill it with your donation. Most importantly, we are asking
you to recite the prayer on the bottle. The weekend to bring back the
filled bottles is Father’s Day weekend, June 14th/15th.
The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just
the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother’s heart to
accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life
Center in the first place.
Let us pray with our whole heart for the lives of our unborn children.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Welcome to Holy Cross Religious Education
The Religious Education Office is planning ahead to the 2014-2015 Formation Year.
We need your help so that we can adequately plan to meet the needs of our parish. If
you have a child entering First Grade in September you need to register. If you
have recently moved to our parish you need to register.





First time registration needs to be done in person at our office.
Registration needs to be completed by June 13, 2014.
Office Hours: Monday – Friday 9:00-12:00 & 1:00-4:00
If your child was not baptized at Holy Cross you need to bring a copy of your
child’s Baptism Certificate.
For those who are already part of our program, you need to register as well
for the upcoming year. Materials have been sent to your home, and they
may be returned by mail. Please note the deadline of June 13, 2014.
A detailed outline of our program is available on-line or at our office. But, there are a
few important details to be noted.


Children must successfully complete each grade level to proceed to the next.
The Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation require a
minimum of two years of preparation.
Most importantly, we need to work together. Faithful attendance at classes and
parent workshops is essential. As comprehensive
and informative as our program is, this is only one
part of your child’s faith formation. The greatest
thing you can do to nurture your faith and the faith of
your child is to regularly be part of our Sunday
Eucharist.
The Catechism of the Church states that parents
have the first responsibility for the education of their
children. We are privileged to work with you in this
task. We thank you for your cooperation in allowing
us to be part of your lives. We look forward to a
fruitful year where everyone, young and old,
continues to grow in understanding the gift of our
faith.

PARISH OUTREACH
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
Heifer International works with mothers all over the world to make a better life
for their children. Through the gift of livestock and training, these moms are
sending their children to school, buying essential medicine and clothing, and
finding their voices. This Mother’s Day, we honor all mothers in the parish by
empowering other women to lift themselves and their families out of hunger and
poverty.
We are sending in your donations from Kevin Bacon
to purchase Five Promise Baskets @ $85 each.
Geese, ducks, chickens and rabbits are included in
these Promise Baskets, which give struggling families
the promise of a secure future. This gift also includes
training on how to properly care for the animals.
The money earned from selling the goods produced
by these Promise Baskets will pay for better housing for a woman needing to
find decent shelter for her poor family, as well as school tuition and supplies for
her children. And, it will enable her to Pass on the Gift quickly, securing the
promise of a better future for her entire neighborhood.
WOMEN’S PRAYER
Calling all faith filled women on Saturday, May 17th at 9:30AM

filled women.
 We grow in our faith as it is shared!
 We support one another on this journey.
 We lean on and learn from each other.
 We eagerly long to meet you!
Come be a part of Women’s Prayer! Please note our meeting is on Saturday, May
17th (this is a change due to First Holy Communions).

Providing Bright Futures for
Young Women and Their Children
Joan was 17 years old, pregnant, facing emotional difficulties, and living in foster care
when she came to Catholic Charities’ Regina Residence program for young women
dealing with untimely pregnancies.
Joan received individual counseling and support from the residential staff at Regina, as
well as life skills training so necessary for new mothers. She was encouraged to go
back to high school so that she could get her diploma, and have a better chance of
supporting her new family. Not only did Joan graduate high school, but she continued
her education and began a successful career.
Today, working full-time, attending college in the evening, and living in her
own apartment, Joan is a wonderful mom to her beautiful little boy.

The guest speaker will be Thomas Renker Esq., General Counsel of the Diocese
of Rockville Centre. Please join us to learn of ongoing religious discrimination and
censorship in our schools, churches, workplace, and military and in the public arena!
For the past several years, Mr. Renker has been involved in efforts in the Diocese to
protect religious liberties. He will explain ongoing attacks on freedom of religion
posed by the HHS mandate and other contexts and will also give an update on the
latest court cases being heard.
