Welcome back!
We have two new members of staff joining us this week: Steph Brown joins our Science Department and Carolyn
Larwood has joined English. They have a huge amount to offer our students and I’m sure you would want to
welcome them both.
Over Easter we received an enormous amount of positive publicity regarding our Interact Club winning the Rotary
Club of Great Britain and Ireland ‘Young Citizens Award’. You can read about it below. Of course we are all very
proud that the team won the award but between you and I, I would equally proud of them if they had come home
empty handed; proud of the money they have raised for charity and proud of the contribution they have made to
improving people’s lives – both locally and around the world.

INTERACT CLUB WIN NATIONAL AWARD
Year 11 students will shortly be receiving
their individual exam timetables for the
summer.; this will show them the finalised
start time of all of their exams as well as the
room they will be in and the desk number at
which they will be sitting. These timetables
will also be emailed home so that both
parents and students have an electronic
copy available. Occasionally changes need
to be made to these timetables –
replacements will also be emailed home in
this event.
If the school does not currently have a valid
email address then please contact the
Exams Office to provide this information:

Huge congratulations to the THS
Interact Club who have won a
national award in celebration of
their outstanding fundraising
efforts! Tiverton Rotary Club put
forward the nomination for the
Young Citizen Group Award, which
was given by Rotary International
at the national award ceremony
held in Bournemouth on Saturday
2nd April. Events such as
"I'm a Teacher Get Me Out of Here" and the CHAT tutor challenge,
organised and co-ordinated by the Interactors themselves, have led to
thousands of pounds being raised for worthwhile causes at home and
overseas.

YEAR 8 OPTIONS EVENING
Next Tuesday (19th April) is the Year 8
Options Evening. Last term your child had
an assembly to explain how their options will
be made and a letter was also sent home
which outlined the process and invited
parents to this option evening. This is a key
moment for Year 8 students and it is
important that all students and parents /
carers attend if at all possible. Option forms
will be given out on the evening and there
will be the opportunity to listen to different
Subject Leaders and ask questions.
The programme will run twice. For students
in Barle, Culm and Dart the presentation will
be from 6.00pm to 6.50pm. It will then be
repeated from 7.00pm to 7.50pm for
students in Exe, Lowman and Otter.
Lydia Fitton, Caitlin Davies and Leila Bracken (Year 11) were joined in
representing the club at the national award ceremony by last year's
president and vice president, Sam Padfield and Lucy Nicholas. You
may have spotted their smiling faces on the BBC news over the Easter
holidays! They also received an additional £500, which they have
chosen to donate to the local charity we have been supporting this
year: Children's Hospice South West.
Many congratulations for this wonderful celebration of all the hard work
and commitment shown by a fantastic group of students. May you
continue changing the world!
500 WORD STORY COMPETITION NEWS!
Congratulations to Izzy Sharpe, Joshua
Russell and Daisy Paton. From 123,400
entries nationwide to the BBC Radio 2
short story competition, three of our
Year 7 students have successfully made
it through to the final 4,500 entries!
We look forward to seeing you.

ROYAL MARINES
WORK EXPERIENCE AT ROYAL DEVON & EXETER HOSPITAL
On Tuesday 15th March,
a group of 6 students
from THS took part in
a Royal Marines test to see if we had what it
took to do a week of training for our work
experience.
Congratulations to Kai Damerel (BaVJC) and Sydney-Paige Richards
(ExHAC/RR) for securing a Work Experience placement at the
Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital in July. The competition for the
places was very high, so we are very proud of our students. The
week will involve various presentations, practical sessions and a
mock ward. A great opportunity to experience a career in a
hospital. Commiserations to our other students that didn’t secure a
place but also submitted very high quality applications.
The test took place at the Royal Marines
Training Centre, Lympstone. The day
consisted of briefings from serving Marines,
gym tests (bleep test, sit ups, push ups and
pull ups), swimming and then a written test.
Overall it was an amazing day and the
competition was very high.
The following week we found out we were all
successful and we are now looking forward to
spending a week with the Marines in
Lympstone in July!
The successful students were: Bailey Cole,
Oscar Dixon, Jack Gunn, Damian Papiez,
Michal Roguski and Tom Underhill.

Devon Chamber of Commerce is running a careers
fair for 14-24 year olds at Tiverton High School on
Tuesday 26 April. This is part of a national initiative
supported by the government
www.yourfuturecareersfairs.co.uk
This is a great opportunity for young people to
discover the different career paths and
employment opportunities available in the local
area. There will be a range of further and higher
education providers at the event including Petroc,
Exeter College and Plymouth University.
Many businesses will also be present, including
Hepcomotion, the RAF, Redrow PLC and SW
Highways, keen to meet young people and talk to
them directly about their sector and the skills and
attributes young people need to follow a career in
this area.
Staff from guidance organisations, including
Careers South West and Prospects, will be
available to help young people explore which
career route might suit them best.

This event is intended to raise awareness of the varied and
outstanding courses and apprenticeships that the college has
to offer and will support your work in delivering careers and
progression advice to students at different stages in their
decision-making process.
The event is open to students wishing to study at all levels and
across all disciplines, from Years 9 and 10, through to Year
11s. For those Year 11s who have already visited the college,
this event offers an excellent opportunity to ask any further
questions, to seek longer-term careers advice, to tour our city
centre sites and to meet staff and students.

Expo, please visit our website or call us on 01392

BIG BANG
On Friday 18th March, a small group of year 8
and 9 students enjoyed a day of Science,
Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM)
events at Petroc.
They were treated to an awesome
sound and vision show, an inspirational
talk about the Amazon and lots of
hands-on workshops designed to stretch
their engineering and scientific skills.
Activities ranged from making lip balm
to constructing motorised vehicles.
Students held discussions about how
to live sustainably and preserve the
Earth's resources; as many are aiming
to follow science and engineering
careers the future of our planet is in
their hands!
YR 11 Food Technology Students dine at PETROC
Restaurant!
On Wednesday 23 March Yr 11 Food
Technology students were invited to
PETROC restaurant for a free lunch
to celebrate the handing in of their
Food Technology Coursework. The
food served was both beautifully
presented and delicious to taste.
Our meals were made and served
by a number of ex Tiverton students
who have gone on to study Food at
PETROC with lecturer Karen Rivers.
The menu included a choice of Fish
and Chips or Sausage and Mash with
a dessert of Bakewell Tart or
Chocolate Brownie. I have to say
my favourite was the Chocolate
Brownie – it was amazing! - served
with homemade honeycombe,
cookie dough ice-cream and
decorated with a sugar work spiral!

MUSIC EXAMS
Beth Padfield and Miriam Bowler took Trinity Board singing
exams last term. Miriam passed her Grade 1 with distinction and
Beth passed her Grade 6 with distinction, scoring full marks in
two of her songs.
Four students also sat Flute exams. Their results were:
Isobel Davies – Grade 5 Pass
Libby Syers – Grade 5 Merit
Tia Licorish – Grade 2 Pass
Jenna Copsey – Grade 3 Pass
The Music Department would like to congratulate you all on
these fantastic achievements. Well done!
SPACE DETECTIVES
Year 7 students took part in workshops with Jo
Richardson from ‘Space Detectives’, who visited the
school to talk about ‘Our Place in Space’. Pupils
from visiting Tiverton Co-operative Learning
Partnership schools also attended, and had fun
learning about the planets and other objects in our
neighbourhood of space. There were experiments
which proved gravity, how our galaxy was formed
and the basis of the theory of ‘Dark Matter’. The
Year 7 students are currently studying the planets
as part of their science lessons, so the workshop
helped add to this knowledge in a non-classroom
environment. We would like to thank local space
enthusiast Paul Young for donating this workshop to
the school after winning it as a prize and to Jo for
being so inspirational and enthusiastic on the topic.

Volunteers needed for Tiverton
Library this Summer
THS students have been offered the opportunity to
volunteer at Tiverton library during the Summer
Holidays.
For more information please come along to a meeting
with Tiverton library staff at THS library on Tues 26th

college application.
GIRLS FOOTBALL
SCHOOL TRANSPORT
Our Yr 11 and Yr 7 teams made the
trip to Exeter to play St Peter’s
School. For the Yr 11s it was their
last game representing Tiverton
High School and it did not
disappoint! The girls dominated
the game and came away 5-nil
winners.
Our Yr 7s competed in a well
matched game, showing great
character and Connie Pengelly
came so close to breaking the
deadlock with a fantastic effort
from just over the half way line.
The game finished goalless.
Well done girls. Looking
forward to next season
Mrs Bamber

in the Devon League Cup Final. Good luck to Kathryn Heard, Ellie
Townsend, Madi Walker, Imogen Ogborne, Ruby Toogood, Murron
Humphries, Letiesha Bird, Connie Pengelly, Lissy Keane, Jodie

achievement for them. Good luck girls!
Tiverton High School supports the (DCC) Devon
County Council’s “No Pass No Travel Scheme”
that operates on transport to and from this
school.
Only students who show a valid travel pass to the
driver on every journey will be allowed to travel.
Students must travel on the vehicle indicated on
their pass.
Please ensure that your child has their travel
pass before they leave home every day.
Please ensure that your child knows what to do in
the event they are not allowed to travel or the bus
does not arrive (e.g. because of breakdown or
traffic conditions or severe weather). School
attendance is very important and it is best to be
prepared for any of these eventualities.
DCC will carry out regular pass checks
throughout the year.
Drivers are not allowed to carry passengers who
cannot show a valid pass.
If your child loses their pass during the day they
should go to the administration office to ask for a
10 day temporary pass. Replacement passes
cost £5 each and can be ordered online, or
by sending a cheque with a replacement
form.
