Vermont 2015 Labor Market Areas From the Economic & Labor Market Information Division of the Vermont Department of Labor March 2015 Vermont Labor Market Areas Redefined in 2015 The geography of Vermont’s Labor Market Areas have been redefined to reflect population estimates from the 2010 U.S. Decennial Census and commuting patterns from The American Community Survey. The updated labor market areas will replace the areas based on the 2000 Decennial Census, which have been in use since 2005. This change in the geographic definition of Labor Market Areas will take effect with the release of January 2015 data for Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS). The January 2015 Current Employment Statistics (CES) data will also be based on the new geography for Vermont’s single metropolitan area. While the number of areas remains the same, for most, the geographies have changed. Most areas are wholly within the state, but four include towns from neighboring states. The in-state part of these cross-state areas is indicated as “Vt part”. It should be noted that for most areas the title did not change but there was a change in the geography. For example, Burlington-South Burlington Metropolitan NECTA has the same name but now includes Lincoln and Swanton and does not include Buels Gore and Isle La Motte. For one area, the title changed but the geography remained the same. The Morristown-Stowe LMA changed to the MorristownWaterbury LMA but includes the same towns. (NECTAs), as they are based on cities and towns. In the remainder of the country, counties are the basis for LMAs. Labor Market Areas are determined by combining population data and commuting patterns. The title of each area is based on the town(s) forming the core area or urban cluster. Vermont has three different labor market area types: metropolitan, micropolitan and small labor market areas. In New England, labor market areas are called New England City and Town Areas Labor Market Area titles published by our office may differ from the official names for brevity and common understanding.
