Parish Council News
www.sheriffhutton.co.uk
The Parish Council Meeting on 10th October 2008 was attended by Cllrs D Weston (Chairman), D
Wooles (Vice Chairman), Mrs J Calvert, B Parkinson and N Anfield. Clerk BC Taylor (878060).
Apologies received from Cllrs Mrs P Bean and I Read.
Report from County Councillor Mrs Clare Wood:
Cllr Wood identified problem areas for the next
Financial Year, namely increase in Council Tax with the resulting burden on families, waste disposal, care
for the elderly and maintenance of highways. All of these require extra funding and Government Grants
are not keeping pace. She was pleased that the new speed limit through the Village had been
implemented successfully and suggested that the Community Police Officer should be requested to
monitor speeds of cars at regular time intervals. She stated that there is no money available for the
installation of hard standing at the bus stop on the A64 at the end of Scotchman Lane and this request
should be reviewed in April 2009.
Daffodils: Arrangements are in place to plant further bulbs around the mini roundabout and down Back
Lane. Volunteers will be called for and should meet at the mini roundabout, with their own trowels, on 2nd
November 2008 at 11 am. Councillors will provide bulbs.
Christmas Tree in The Square: It was agreed to leave the present tree in place for Christmas. In
January it will be removed and replaced immediately with a new tree. Date for switching on of lights will
be announced next month.
Planning Applications:
08/00723/FUL: Mr C Massey: Erection of detached building, forming agricultural vehicle store, garage
and tack room at Long Acre, The Green, Sheriff Hutton YO60 6SB. Application refused by Ryedale DC.
08/00688/MREM: Woodhouse Barry (Construction) Ltd: Erection of 9 industrial units at Industrial Estate,
York Road, Sheriff Hutton, York: Application approved by Ryedale DC subject to Conditions.
08/00836/FUL: Mr Peter Simmons: Erection of three-bedroom dwelling with attached garage at land
adjacent to Holly Tree Cottage, Coble Lane, Sheriff Hutton, York. Application approved by Ryedale DC
subject to conditions.
08/00836/LBC: Church of England: Dismantling and rebuilding of Tomb of the Atlay Family, Church of St
Helen and the Holy Cross, East End, Sheriff Hutton, York. Councillors supported this application in its
present form.
08/00917/FUL: Mr & Mrs Bass: Erection of a porch at Hall Farm Barn, Ashbank Lane, High Stittenham,
York. Councillors supported this application in its present form.
08/00831/FUL: Mr N Marwood: Erection of two-storey extension to north elevation at Glebe Farm, Coble
Lane, Sheriff Hutton, York YO60 6SU. Councillors supported this application in its present form.
Parish Plan: An exhibition of future plans for the Village will be held at the Village Hall on Saturday 8th
November 2008 between 2pm and 4pm. It is hoped that as many Residents as possible will be able to
attend.
The next Parish Council Meeting will take place on Friday 14th November 2008 at 7.30pm in the Village
Hall.

Editors Thanks
To all the folders of last months Village News. Well done and thank you. It must have been a pain having
to fold two sheets of A3, one sheet of A4 and two sheets of stapled A4. We really must try to avoid
having two lots of inserts.
Editors Sorry
Sorry we had to say to two people that we would not include their entry last month, but because of
holidays we were unable to extend the date for receipt of entries. Please let us have your entries by
the 18th of the month to avoid disappointment.
They can be put through the door of any one of the
editorial team or e mailed to villagenews@sheriffhutton.co.uk

Backwards or Forwards?
November can be really bleak, with short days and frosty nights, fog and fireworks. It seems to be a
month when we look backwards. We begin with the season of All Souls and All Saints November 1-2nd
when we give thanks for the lives of those who have died whom we love but see no more. We cherish
memories of family events and the favourite sayings of those who have gone before. Photos can be a big
help.
‘Trick or Treat’ is an American import for the Holy Evening –Halloween- October 31st –the night before All
Saints. Let’s keep it holy – not too many scary masks! Why not bring back apple bobbing?
Even Guy Fawkes, November 5th, is a reminder of old divisions between Catholic and Protestant which
thankfully have long since disappeared.
Next, Remembrance Sunday on November 9th reminds us of the futility of war and the bravery of those
who gave their lives on our behalf. As we remember the soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq today by
wearing our red poppies, we promise that we will work to prevent violence from breaking out wherever we
are.
It’s also the end of the Church year. ‘Stir up’ we pray on the Sunday before Advent November 23rd, ‘the
souls of your faithful people that they plenteously bringing forth the fruits of good works may by you be
plenteously rewarded. ‘
Many people take this as a reminder to make their Christmas puddings, but we can also stir ourselves to
look forward to a time of growth, leaving the mistakes and sadness of the past behind us as we look to
Christ the king of our hearts. He is waiting to tell us how much he loves each one of us.
Revd Sue Nightingale

Hiring Charges for 2009. The rise in prices during 2008 which we have all experienced is impacting on
the cost of running the Hall – two of our biggest annual bills are for heating oil and electricity. As a result,
the hiring charges will be increased for all bookings from January 1st. We have endeavoured to keep the
increases as low as possible and to maintain our position as one of the better value halls in North
Yorkshire. Current charges and the new rates are shown below :

Car Park Trees
It has been brought to our attention that the two horse chestnut trees between the car park and the

remove them if necessary. If the trees are removed they will be replaced by suitable alternatives as soon
as possible.

wide range of subjects.
A note from Alma Lily thanking members for their contributions, amounting to £215, to go to Botton Hall,

Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association
At a well attended meeting on 8th October our members welcomed Angela Rhoades who gave us a talk
entitled “Pearls”. This was a most interesting and detailed talk on the history of pearls. Angela described
the three different types of pearls, namely, natural, cultured and imitation, how they were formed and how
to look after them. She brought along a selection of necklaces, made of pearls of different shapes, sizes
and colours, which could be purchased if required.
Our members would like to thank Alma and Norman Lilley and Wendy and Richard Haste for hosting the
Coffee Morning in memory of Carole Hellewell, and also everyone who supported this event in any way.
It was a very special occasion and your generosity helped us to raise £143 for our funds. Thank you all
once again.
Our next meeting is on 12th November, 7.30pm in the Village Hall when our speaker will be Richard Haste
and his subject is “All about the Hall for All.”
Just a reminder for members, could you please let us have your completed Menus for the Christmas
Lunch along with the money no later than 12th November.
Bette will be taking, at the next meeting, the money for the Northallerton Trip arranged for 3rd December.
She would like the money for the theatre trip, arranged for January 2009, as soon as possible in order
that she can book the tickets.
Once again we would welcome any visitors or new members to any of our YCA meetings.
Mid Week Ramble
Just what you need in November – a good walk and a pub lunch at the end. So wrap up well in case the
weather is unkind, put on some strong footwear and be at the Village Hall Car Park at 9.30am on
Wednesday 26th November. The rambling group will organise the rest.
Prize Bingo
Prize bingo in the Village Hall on Friday 14th November in memory of John (Percy) Marshall. All proceeds
donated to ‘Racing Welfare’. Good quality prizes – including Christmas Goods. Eyes down – 7.30pm. If
you would like to kindly donate or make a donation, please contact Cynthia Marshall, or Diane Coulton.
Carole Hellewell
A huge thank you for all the cards, phone calls and messages of sympathy we have received since Mum
passed away. It was lovely to see so many faces both old and new at ‘Carole’s Coffee Morning’. I know
Mum would have been both pleased and surprised at the turnout. Thank you so much to Alma and
Norman, and Wendy and Richard for opening up their houses. The occasion raised £215 for the Botton
Village Community and £143 for the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association.

Village of the Year 2008
On Friday 10th October, Catherine Jackson, Denis Donaldson and I attended the Awards Evening at
Terrington Village Hall. We were absolutely delighted to hear that Sheriff Hutton had won both the
Communication and Business Categories. Sadly we were beaten by just 1 point by Oswaldkirk who won
the overall title, Village of the Year. – Well done to them.
The judges were extremely impressed by our village and all that happens here as was detailed in the
written entry to the competition and confirmed by the verbal and static presentations when they came to
see us in July. Thank you to everyone who came along to tell the judges what a fantastic place Sheriff
Hutton is and also those who did static displays. The enthusiasm for the village that was expressed
certainly had an impact on the judges.
The Judges were particularly impressed by our wonderful Village News and Village Web Site
www.sheriffhutton.co.uk and the commitment of the volunteers involved in these projects. This led to us
receiving the Communications Award.
The high number of local businesses in a village of our size and the two way support between the
businesses and the community so impressed the Judges that they also gave us the Business category
award.
Listening to the Judges’ resume of Sheriff Hutton made us feel so proud to live here.
It was a lovely evening and we had the opportunity to talk to other finalists in the Village of the Year
competition and also the Village Ventures Competition about their award winning projects.

After spending a lovely evening in September enjoying Helen’s garden, BBQing, identifying moths &
watching out for bats, it was a pity that we unable to start the winter schedule until now. However, we are
finally kicking the autumn off with one or two new ideas. Our first meeting will incorporate practical tips on
feeding birds this winter as well as the opportunity to buy feed & feeders. The evening will start a little
earlier so that we can also enjoy a film of The Minsmere Year, a bird reserve run by the RSPB in Suffolk.
It is narrated by David Attenborough with additional commentary from Andy Chapman.

The Parish Plan Group looks forward to seeing you with any further contributions you wish to make.
Message from The Jumblies
The Macmillan Coffee Morning was another record breaker. Over 100 people came along to support. - a
truly enjoyable social event. The total raised was a staggering £1245. £339 of this was small change on
the Money Tree.
Thank you so much to everyone who came along and supported the morning, those who sent donations
and those who collected small change over the year to add to the tree. It is so heart warming to see the
response to our appeal. Coins brought in all sorts of containers. The picture of the finished tree is on the
website so if you can, log on to www.sheriffhutton.co.uk and you will be able to see how splendid it
looked.
Special thanks go to Elaine Aconley who designed the tree and spent most of the morning on her knees
creating it. Thank you to the children who helped; to Bonnie Lawson and Ruby Groves who spent a lot
of time sorting the jewellery that had been donated, and displaying it so attractively and to Alan Dykes for
bringing along his wonderful wooden scale models. He is such a perfectionist.
We did manage a Saturday off before our Jumble Sale for Young Heroes. What a wonderful day, such a
happy atmosphere. It was so rewarding to see the commitment of the young people who came from
Bradford and Manchester to help. They were so thrilled with Sheriff Hutton and the support the
community gave them. It was quite emotional to meet a young lady and her family who have benefited
from a holiday break sponsored by the Young Heroes charity. Again thanks to everyone who supported.
The total raised to date is £1522. Seeing the look on the faces of the Young Heroes supporters when
they heard the total made all the hard work so worthwhile. This brings our running total to £14,097
Our next Jumble Sale will be on Saturday 22nd November at 2pm. We are helping the Malton Rotarians
with their funding raising and again look forward to receiving jumble, etc from 9.30am on the morning of
the sale.

A big thank you to everyone who helped, attended and contributed to this lively evening. It was good to
see so many people taking to the floor to dance to the Band’s excellent music. A final total is not
available yet but we hope to have made around £300 for Village Hall Funds.

Neighbourhood Watch – Police Warning
As Christmas is fast approaching the Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following
scam.
A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that
they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate
number). DO NOT call this number as this is a mail scam originating from Belize. If you call the number
and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call.
If you do receive a card with these details then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 0207 239 6655 or
ICSTIS (the premium rate service regulator) at www.icstis.org.uk or email
Mobile Library
The mobile library visits the Village every 3 weeks. The van carries more than 2000 items including
books, videos, DVDs and audio books. You can join the library on the van and no-one is too young to
have a ticket (babies can do the Bookstart Book Crawl and receive stickers and certificates). Items
borrowed from the library do not incur overdue fines! The van stops are 10.05 – 10.15am at Farlington,
Woodside; 10.20 – 10.30am at Farlington Village Hall; 10.50 – 11.10am at Sheriff Hutton, East End;
11:15 – 11:30am at The Green; 11:35 – 11:45am at Castleside; 11:50 – 12:05pm at Castle View; 12:10
– 12:25pm at Warwick Close; 1:05 – 1:15pm at Dudley Hill Farm and the next visits will be on 18th
November, 9th December and 30th December.
