Abstract The recent steep increase in high energy permanent magnet (PM) price (above 130$/kg and more) triggered already strong R&D efforts to develop wind generators with less PMs (less weight in NdFeB magnets/kW or the use of ferrite PMs) or fully without PMs. All these by optimizing existing dc excited synchronous generators, by doubly-fed (wound rotor) induction and cage induction generators and by introducing new topologies with pertinent costs for high power (MW range) wind energy conversion units. The present overview attempts, based on recent grid specifications, an evaluation of commercial and novel wind generator systems with less or no PMs: from classifications based in principle and on gear ratio, through topologies, modeling, design and performance issues, with results from literature and also from authors findings. It is hoped that such a study, focused on the wind generator itself (though considering the interaction with the PWM converter in terms of power/speed range, losses, kVA, and costs) rather than on the control issues which abound in literature, will be of use for future R&D efforts in wind energy conversion, storage and use. Keynote Speech -2 Chairs: Venue: Oct. 23, 2014 (Thu.), 10:30-11:15 - Prof. Frede Blaabjerg, Aalborg University, Denmark. Prof. Robert D. Lorenz, University of Wisconsin-Madison, WEMPEC, USA. Grand Xixi Ballroom (Rooms G+H+I) Design of Permanent Magnet Brushless Motors for High Speed Applications Prof. Jacek F. Gieras, FIEEE University of Technology and Life Sciences, Department of Electrical Engineering, Bydgoszcz, Poland. UTC Aerospace Systems, Applied Research Department, Rockford, Illinois, USA. jgieras@ieee.org. Abstract: High speed motors that develop rotational speeds in excess of 5000 rpm are necessary for centrifugal and screw compressors, blowers, grinding machines, mixers, pumps, machine tools, textile machines, drills, handpieces, aerospace, flywheel energy storages, etc. The actual trend in high speed electromechanical drives technology is to use permanent magnet (PM) brushless motors, solid rotor induction motors or switched reluctance motors. The highest efficiency and highest power density is achieved with PM brushless motors. Design guidelines for high speed PM brushless motors include: • compact design and high power density; • minimum number of components; • high efficiency over the whole range of variable speed; • power factor close to unity over the whole range of speed and load; • ability of the PM rotor to withstand high temperature (losses in retaining sleeve); • optimal cost–to–efficiency ratio to minimize the system cost–output power ratio; • high reliability (failure rate less than 5% within 80,000 h); • low cogging torque; • low total harmonics distortion (THD). The following issues, which are essential in electromagnetic, mechanical and thermal design of high speed PM brushless motors will be discussed: • Volume and mass: the higher the speed, the higher the power density; • Power losses and efficiency: special attention must be given to windage and core losses; • Laminations: cobalt alloy, non-oriented silicon steel or amorphous alloy laminations; • Stator windings: slotted or slotless windings • Stator conductors: small diameter stranded conductors or Litz wires; • Higher harmonics generated by the solid state converter: parasitical effect as losses, vibration and noise depend on the harmonic content; • Cooling system: intensive air or liquid cooling system; • PM excitation system: if the temperature of the rotor or shaft exceeds 150oC, SmCo PMs must be used; • Rotor tensile hoop stresses: properly selected rotor diameter, rotor diameter–to–length ratio and rotor retaining sleeve (material and thickness); • Thermal compatibility of rotor materials: thermal expansions of the rotor retaining sleeve and rotor core produce compressing stresses on PMs, fluctuating with the temperature; • Rotor dynamics: the first critical speed of the rotor should be much higher or much lower than the rated speed. The keynote speech will be ended with examples of practical applications of high speed PM motors and recent advances in their design. Chan, FREng, FIEEE, FIET, FHKIE, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering Honorary Professor, University of Hong Kong. Senior Fellow, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Germany. ccchan@eee.hku.hk. Abstract: To cope with the current complex economical, societal and technical challenges in the new era, it is vital to be open-minded. Namely, to integrate the Chinese ancient civilization and the western modern civilization, to uphold the spirit of renaissance. Renaissance scientists and engineers are those not only understand Why and How Things work but also on Why and How the World works. The characters of renaissance scientists and engineers can be summarized as 1. Global thinking instead of local thinking; 2. Circle thinking instead of linear thinking; 3. Closed loop thinking instead of open loop thinking; 4. Life cycle thinking instead of partial life thinking; and 5. Harmony thinking between human and nature. In short, we should have all round universe perspectives. We should be open-minded. We should promote the philosophy of engineering, which is system integration, including vertical integration and horizontal integration. The dawn of the commercialization of electric vehicles is coming. However, we still need to pass through the remaining darkness to reach the morning mist and the bright sunshine. With no doubt, electric vehicles will become a paradigm in the new era. The success of commercialization of electric vehicles depends on the satisfactory tackling of four factors: initial cost, convenience of use, energy consumption and exhaust emission. Therefore, we need to pay further efforts towards the following three fundamental enablers or three goodness factors: 1. Availability of good performance products at affordable cost; 2. Availability of good infrastructures that is efficient and friendly to use; 3. Availability of good business model to leverage the cost of barrier. In this connection, we need to integrate the policy, industry and market. We need the hand shake among key players in the automobile industry and the electric power industry. Electric vehicle industry can be a disruptive industry, since the function, production and commercial chain of electric vehicles are not at all the same as conventional vehicles. In terms of function, electric vehicle is not only just a transportation means, but also an electric device with moving energy storage capability. Thus the integration of electric vehicles and smart gird, of electric vehicles and information and communication technologies, is quite essential. Such integration and collaboration should aim at gradually achieving the common goal of four zeros: zero emission, zero gasoline, zero traffic accident, and zero traffic jam. In this keynote speech, the global state of the art of electric vehicles, their key technologies and infrastructures will be addressed. Grand Xixi Ballroom (Rooms G+H+I) Small Actuators: a Multi-Disciplinary Approach and a Strong Link with Industry Prof. Yves Perriard Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. yves.perriard@epfl.ch. Abstract: The evolution of what is called small mechatronic systems took a more and more important dimension for these last ten years. Nowadays, the number of actuators, sensors increases fast in a lot of fields. The development of these future systems requires a sustained research of high level to allow a miniaturization of these elements for one thing and an increased autonomy by means of "smart" electronics on the other hand. Energy saving is also a key issue for our future which is also strongly dependent of devices efficiency, even for small power consumption. Connections with material science and information technology are the key for innovation in this topic. Existing technologies must be used in an unconventional use to create innovations. The proposed keynote intends to show some examples of multi-disciplinary projects and shows how to combine some exiting technologies in a smart way. The link with industries will be highlighted as a common thread in all breakthrough innovations. Haptic devices, sensorless electronic for brushless motor, MEM’s electromechanical motor as well as liquid actuator will be highlighted during this presentation. Abstract: Electrical machines have been widely used for many applications, ranging from electric and hybrid electric vehicles, renewable energy including wind power generators, more electric aircrafts, industrial drives, automations, to domestic appliances etc. Many new electrical machine technologies are still developing, particularly novel machine topologies. This keynote speech systematically overviews the recent developments in innovative permanent magnet machines, switched reluctance machines, synchronous reluctance machines, and wound field machines. The emphasis will focus on recent advances in various new doubly salient electrical machines and magnetically geared machines, including (1) stator PM machines such as doubly salient, flux reversal, and switched flux PM machines; (2) switched reluctance machines and variable flux reluctance machines; (3) stator PM biased reluctance machines and stator wound field switched flux machines; (4) hybrid excitation variable flux machines and memory machines; as well as (5) various magnetic gears; (6) novel dual-airgap/dual-rotor, dual-airgap/single-rotor, single-airgap/single-rotor magnetically geared PM machines and vernier PM machines. The unique relationships between these electrical machines and magnetically geared machines will be systematically revealed, resulting in the recent development of a new class of magnetically geared switched flux machines, which will be illustrated by many examples. Room G How Big Must an Electric Machine Be? –Development of Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Machines Prof. Dean J Patterson Regal Beloit, Australia; University of Nebraska Lincoln, USA; patterson@ieee.org B Kennedy, R Rohoza, M Turner, M Smith Regal Beloit, Australia Abstract: This paper begins with the very famous discussion of the “goodness” of electrical machines published by Professor Eric Laithwaite in the 1960s. He felt he could prove that there were some very fundamental physical principles that implied that as electric machines got large, they could use material more effectively, and were easier to design. On the contrary, as they got smaller, the reverse happened. It turns out that he was absolutely right for induction machines. A relatively recent set of measurements on currently available induction machines will be presented which reinforce his result. However he did not envisage the 2 fold impact of rare earth permanent magnets (PMs) on machine design. Firstly it will be demonstrated, with a range of early designs as examples, that PM machines are nowhere near as subject to size determined performance enhancements or degradations. The second impact is more subtle. PMs enabled the practical construction of axial flux permanent PM machines. Axial flux induction machines were tried, but were never competitive, because good induction motor designs require a very small airgap. Rare earth PMs have released us from this particularly stringent and limiting condition. When adopted, axial flux technology has led to a significant reduction in machine size across a broad range of power ratings. Some early designs for solar car racing drives and starter alternators for internal combustion engines will be shown and discussed to demonstrate not only freedom from the constraint of “goodness”, but also a significant increase in achievable torque density. In the last seven years in Regal Beloit we have put into large scale production a number of axial flux machines all demonstrating a reasonably consistent high torque density from small to large. Incidentally, partly because of the low volume, but primarily because of some special features of the specific geometry of single sided actual flux machines, these all use significantly less active material than the standard radial flux inside rotor machine. Thus these are proving to result in significantly reduced costs. Three machines in production will be explored in some detail and some recent developments explored. Invited Speech -2 (ISS1-2) Oct. 24, 2014 (Fri.), 9:15-10:00- Chairs: Prof. Yves Perriard, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. Prof. Robert Nilssen, The Norwegian University of Science and Venue: Technology, Norway. Room G The 4QT Concept for Electric Hybrid Vehicles – from Invention to Implementation in a Demonstration Vehicle Prof. Chandur Sadarangani Laboratory of Electrical Energy Conversion (E2C), Department of Electrical Engineering, Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH), Stockholm, Sweden. chandur@ee.kth.se Abstract The 4QT is a power split hybrid concept that is built on 2 rotating rotors, an inner rotor that contains a 3-phase winding and is mechanically connected to the internal combustion engine (ICE) and an outer rotor that is mounted with permanent magnets both in the inner and outer surfaces and that is mechanically connected to the wheel via a suitable gearbox. The magnets in the inner surface work with the rotating winding in the inner rotor that is fed from the batteries via slip rings/brushes to handle the speed difference between the ICE and wheel while the magnets on the outer surface work with windings on an outer stator to handle the torque difference. The 4QT concept is thus a compact solution that allows the ICE to operate at an optimal operating point that is independent of the torque and speed at the wheel. The presentation will cover a period between 1993 when the concept was first invented to 2008 when the system was implemented and tested in a bus demonstrating the potential of the system at the same time revealing some of the challenges that a researcher experiences in the practical implementation of a theoretical concept.
