Instructor: Mr. Jeff Green jgreen@fortosage.net (816) 650-7180 CTC Director: Mike Pantleo mpantleo@fortosage.net (816) 650-7180 Instructional Philosophy: The CTC programs utilize curriculum that is aligned with national business and industry standards. The programs integrate the academic core areas of Math, Science and Communication Arts along with comprehensive work ethics competencies into their Career and Technical Education (CTE) instruction. Students should expect to complete weekly reading and writing assignments and bi-monthly math assignments. By understanding that students have diverse needs the CTC instructors will use multiple instructional techniques to help students succeed. The delivery methods are a mix of classroom, online, individual, group, and hands-on or practical instruction. Homework or work outside of the CTC will be an essential component to student success. All students will be expected to follow the CTC Student Handbook rules and policies. Course Goals: - Continually look for ways to incorporate academics into the technical curriculum - To help all students be successful at CTC technically, academically, and ethically - To prepare all students for success entering college and/or the work place - To encourage students to participate in SkillsUSA - To pass the required end of course exams - To promote learning in a safe and professional environment - To learn the proper ways to research and steps to write a Critical Thinking Research Paper Major Course Projects*: 1. Problem Based/ Critical Thinking Research – This anchor project will help prepare you for college and the career field of your interest. You will select a topics that are related to the automotive industry and learn how to research, write thesis statements, format research papers, and various other writing techniques that will help prepare you a Critical Thinking Research Project. 2. Multiple Lab Projects throughout the year. Students will be expected to maintain a high level of professionalism when working on lab and customer vehicles. 3. Book read, “Fish,” by Stephen C. Lundin, Ph.D., Harry Paul, and John Christensen *Other projects as assigned. Instructional Delivery Plan: Classroom & lab instruction – Technical and academic instruction will be presented using many different methods of instruction. Instruction will primarily be team based, problem based, lecture based, and will require note-taking. Students will be writing for a minimum of 15 minutes weekly and will have a math assignment twice per month. Homework will be required at least weekly. Students will use laptop computers every day for instruction and will be required to use school provided email/online storage for most assignments. Essential Skills Instruction – Rigorous academic integration will be supported with the help of the essential skills instructor. Work Ethics – Every three weeks the students will be evaluated based on their work ethic for the grading period. The evaluation will be self-assessed as well as teacher-assessed. There will be multiple activities that reinforce the work ethics expected in industry throughout the year. Technician uniforms will be part of our work ethic grade and will be worn on Tuesday and Thursday of each week. Extra Help – Students struggling with academic readiness, assignments, attendance, work ethics or other areas that affect their success at CTC will receive assistance from CTC support staff as needed. An online class specific website will also be available for students. Parents can access the online site called Blackboard via https://blackboard.fortosage.net . You can login as a guest, then go to Career and Technology Center, followed by 2014 Automotive Technology I. Assessment Plan: Assessment for Learning – Students will be asked to resubmit substandard work that is lacking in quality, maximum effort, and/or real-world logic. Nationally Standardized – Academic Readiness – COMPASS placement test Technical – NATEF (ASE) End of Course Tests for Brakes, Engine Repair, Electrical, Engine Performance, Steering / Suspension, and Maintenance / Light Repair Program Specific – Safety and Pollution Control Final Exams - All students must pass both finals as outlined by S/P2 guidelines. Chapter Summative Tests Mid-term and Semester Summative Tests (Written and Performance Based) SkillsUSA Written and Performance District Exam Ford/AAA Competition Exam Academic and Technical Standards: 94% attendance Minimum of C- average Program of Study: “In order to ensure that students will make a successful transition to high school and a positive postsecondary experience, it is important for them to develop a rigorous and relevant personal plan of study based on their interests and abilities. The plans of study should reflect not only graduation requirements, but also movement toward a career focus revolving around career paths and/or clusters. It is imperative that school personnel, students and their parents continuously review these plans and modify them when all agree that changes are desirable. This planning and monitoring process should result in all students completing high school well prepared for their chosen postsecondary experience or entry into the workplace.” Taken from: Graduation Requirements for Students in Missouri Public Schools, MO Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, January 2007 Subject Communication Arts Mathematics Science Social Studies Fine Arts Practical Arts Personal Finance Health Physical Education Electives * Minimum Units Required College Preparatory Studies Certificate 4 4 3 3 1 1 .5 .5 1 7 25 State Minimum Requirements 4 3 3 3 1 1 .5 .5 1 7 24 Program Specific Course Recommendations (minimum): 1.
