Bolen, Director of Cooperative Extension, University of Nebraska, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources It is the policy of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources not discriminate on the basis of gender, age, disability, race, color, religion, marital status, veteran's status, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation. Preface The Cockroach Control Manual is a practical reference for persons who have had little or no training in insect identification, biology or control methods. An earlier version was developed for those attending our Cockroach Combat Workshops. In these workshops, we emphasized a holistic, least-toxic approach to controlling cockroaches using all available tactics for the most effective control. Each of the authors have read enough scientific literature to understand just how easy it would have been to overwhelm you with technical information. Our goal was to translate scientific jargon into every-day English, and to write this manual in an interesting style that is easy to read and understand. If you study this manual from cover to cover, you will be better able to understand cockroach biology and behavior and will be able to conduct a successful cockroach control program. http://pested.unl.edu/preface.htm 3/1/2006 Preface amd Acknowledgements, Cockroach Control Manual Page 2 of 3 Acknowledgments The authors wish to thank Mr. James Kalisch, who designed the front and back covers, and provided much of the photographic, computer-generated and hand-drawn artwork throughout this manual. Some of Mr. Kalisch's cartoon artwork can be found throughout the manual. We also thank Ms. Soni Ericksen for her artwork in Chapter 5 and for her review of this manual. Special thanks to Dr. Shripat Kamble, who reviewed this manual carefully and provided many important suggestions. Dr. Kamble was a strong supporter of the workshops and of the development of this manual. He assisted our program by providing live cockroach specimens for demonstrations, and by keeping us informed of the most current control technologies available. We appreciated his help immensely! Constructive criticism and revisions were provided by Ms. Katherine French and Ms. Roberta Scott, both of whom kept us from straying too far into the world of scientific gibberish. Thanks to both for their time spent, and for "bringing us back to reality" when needed. We also extend our appreciation to the UNL Urban Pest Management team, coordinated by Dr. David Keith for support and encouragement. The team provided financial support for slide development and guidance in the technical aspects of the workshops. Thanks to all! And finally, this manual, our workshops, and the development of teaching aids were supported through an Integrated Pest Management grant from University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension at the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
