LEE COLLEGE FACULTY WORKLOAD

Full-time Load Calculation
During the fall and spring terms, a full-time faculty load is either (1) 15 credit hours of lecture, (2)
nine lecture hours and nine lab hours, (3) 18 contact hours that combine lecture and lab when lecture
hours fall below nine hours, or (4) an equivalent when other combinations exist. For Load calculation
purposes, 1.5 lab hours equate to 1 lecture hour. For pay calculation purposes, 1 lab hour = .66 of a
lecture hour. Where a disparity occurs in pay or weight of activities when lab hours are converted to
lecture hours, the college is committed to weighting and paying the higher benefit to the employee. The
appropriate dean with the advice of the division chair and Human Resource Officer will decide
discretionary changes. If an instructor teaches only the lecture or only the lab, the applicable hours will
be calculated in the load. Note: Contact hours refer to the number of hours taught per week during a 16week term. Accordingly, contact hours per week are adjusted proportionately for terms of less than 16
weeks.
Cosmetology: A regular cosmetology workload is 4 lecture hours and 24 lab hours. Those
teaching 5 lecture hours and 30 lab hours will be paid at the rate of a regular load with a three-hour
lecture overload.
Huntsville: Faculty who are on 6-month contracts at Huntsville will teach five classes and receive
a regular load with a 4-lecture hour overload.
LVN and EMT Classes: Based on the equations below for lecture, clinical, lab, and practicum, the
LVN and EMT workload will equate to one of the options above.
Music: Full-time music instructors are required to teach a minimum of one lecture or ensemble
class each fall or spring term. Applied music classes are calculated as follows: credits/2 x number of
students (e.g., 1 credit/2 x 3 students = 1.5 lab hours; 2 credits/2 x 4 students = 4 lab hours).
RN Classes: The workload is 15 based on the equations below. Calculations for relay-taught
classes are based on a portion of the total number of class hours. Since 16 hours equates to 1 load
credit, an instructor who teaches 4 hours of a five-hour lecture section (80 contact hours) receives .25
load credit; accordingly, 8 hours equates to .5 load credit. Load credits are rounded to the nearest
quarter. Load credits are rounded to the nearest quarter.

Practicums
The appropriate dean determines the number of practicum hours that can be used toward a full
load. Practicum hours are based on the number of students enrolled in all sections of an instructor’s

2 lecture hours = 6-10students
3 lecture hours = 11-15 students

Small Classes
With the approval of the Vice President of Learning, classes with small enrollments may be pooled.

Team-taught Classes
Faculty receive six lecture hours for either a six- or nine-hour block of team-taught courses.
Overload Calculations
Faculty are limited to four credit hours or six contact hours of overload per term unless otherwise
approved by the dean. When it meets the needs of the institution, division chairpersons can receive an
overload, with the recommendation of the dean and the approval of the president. Others on professional
assignments can receive an overload, with the approval of the dean, since the overload time must be
beyond the required on-campus time of 35 hours per week. There are separate hourly rates for lecture
hours and lab hours.
One-to-One Instruction
Faculty who choose to provide one-to-one instruction for courses for which sections have made will
do so at their own discretion without additional pay, and the offering will be pooled with another section
for the purpose of load calculations.
Professional Assignments
Following are standard professional assignments and their hour equivalency for load calculations.
The appropriate dean with the approval of the Vice President of Learning recommends other
assignments. All professional assignments during the summer are pending enrollment.
Division chairperson: Fall and spring terms – determined by the number of programs and full- and
part-time faculty outlined below (totals may vary from term to term). Summer – The equivalent of 3
contact hours per six-week term or 6 contact hours per 10-, 11-, and 12-week term pending enrollment.

Part-time Faculty
Part-time faculty assignments will be no more than 10 lecture hours after conversion of lab and
clinical hours to lecture hours (or 67% of a full teaching load) during fall and spring terms or the
equivalent during summer term(s). The president must approve additional hours. Determining benefit
eligibility is the function of the Human Resource Officer at the discretion of the Dean of Financial
Services. These determinations will be made consistent with Board Policy DJ Local and TRS guidelines.
Using these guidelines, the part time faculty does not approach benefit eligibility until they are required to
be on campus greater than 17.5 hours a week (half of the established 35 hours a week minimum
expected of full time faculty according to Board Policy DJ Local), for the long semester regardless of the
activities in which they are involved.
Only the president has the authority to offer a temporary full-time contract. Letters-of-appointment
are assigned to only those faculty who are on grant monies or employed at the Huntsville Center.
Lecture hours and lab hours are paid at their respective rates. Practicums are paid at the lecture
hour rate (see Practicum on page 1 for more information). Applied music lessons are paid at the lab hour
rate (see Music on page 1 for calculations).

Substitute Teaching
To be compensated for substitute teaching, part-time faculty must complete the same application
procedures as other adjunct faculty. Part-time/adjunct faculty are compensated at the rate of $15 for
each class period they teach, except for clinicals, which are paid at the lecture hour rate. Full-time faculty
substitute gratis three consecutive hours of a section and, thereafter, are paid at the respective lecture/lab
rate. If an extended absence is known in advance (e.g., surgery), then the assigned instructor receives
the respective lecture/lab rate from the first day of teaching.
Grant Payments
All grant payments for faculty, whether paid during fall, spring, or summer terms, are paid through
professional assignments that are part of the current course load for the faculty member involved in the
grant. The appropriate equivalency will be determined by the requirements of the grant as decided by the
administrator of the grant and the faculty member’s instructional dean.
Summer Loads
Receipt of a summer teaching assignment is determined by seniority and division policy (see
Attachment A). A six-week summer load equates to six contact hours (e.g., two 3-credit lecture classes,
two physical education classes, or one class of 3 lecture/3 lab hours). Faculty who teach an eight-week
term will schedule their on-campus hours to 28.5 hours per week and be compensated for six weeks. A
ten-, eleven-, or twelve-week summer load equates to twelve contact hours.
The maximum overload for a six-week term is six contact hours. The maximum overload of a ten-,
eleven-, or twelve-week term is the equivalent of six contact hours (e.g., two 3-credit lecture classes, one
class of 3 lecture hours/3 lab hours). With the approval of the dean, faculty may be granted an additional
overload if it is in the best interests of the college.

SUMMER LOAD POLICY
General Policy

Seniority is the basis for determining summer contracts.
Seniority is determined by division/department rather than an overall college ranking.
Every department member receives a load before anyone receives an overload.
The Lee College and Huntsville campuses are treated as separate campuses.
Those who have taken early retirement or announced their intent do not have preference over other
faculty with seniority.
Seniority is also determined by the assignment for which the faculty member was hired, even though
he/she has expertise in another area. Therefore, employment in another department is the option of
that department, and the faculty member does not have seniority over other faculty members or
preference selection over part-time faculty.
Faculty members may choose not to teach summer term.
Faculty on partial loads receive a prorated amount of their salary rather than part-time pay.
Chairpersons do not have priority on full loads.
Allied Health Division
1. Senior faculty members shall have preference in accepting or declining teaching assignments.
2. All faculty members shall be given the opportunity to accept or decline teaching assignments prior to
faculty members being awarded overloads.
3. Prior teaching experience and expertise in a particular discipline will be addressed before offering
faculty members teaching opportunities.
4. Full-time faculty members will be given the opportunity to accept or decline teaching assignments
prior to the utilization of part-time faculty.
Business Technology Division
1. Priority for teaching summer school will be decided by seniority within individual programs.
2. Every instructor will be allowed to teach one full six-week term before anyone teaches an overload or
a second six-week term.
3. Seniority will be considered each summer and will start over the following summer.
4. A faculty with seniority can bump another instructor who has a full class within a program.
Computer Technology Division
1. Provide one course to all who want to teach, on a seniority basis before anyone receives an assigned
second course.
2. Senior faculty members, whose class does not make, may “bump” faculty members with less seniority
whose class does make.
3. Until everyone in the discipline who is full-time has a full load, no one who is assigned in another
discipline may cross over to teach.
4. No overloads will be assigned until all those who want to teach have a full load.
English/Communications
1. “Rotating seniority” is the basis for assignment the entire summer, including both terms. The rotation
is continued until it is complete.
2. Expertise may take precedence over seniority with approval of Division Chair.
3. Everyone in the Division receives a partial load before full loads are assigned.
4. An instructor with seniority can “bump” another instructor with less seniority when the former’s class
does not make and the latter’s class does.

Huntsville Center
Priority in class assignment at the Lee College-Huntsville Center will be given to Lee College
instructors on a seniority basis. However, extenuation circumstances may exist in certain situations (i.e.,
lab and lecture classes, unit schedules, particular problems with professional leave, etc.) that may
necessitate deviating from seniority as the primary basis for assignment. In such cases, seniority will be
given as much consideration as possible, given the circumstances.
Math/Sciences
1. Provide one course for all full-time instructors before anyone has two courses.
2. Rotate full partial loads on a continuous basis with the beginning rotation determined by seniority.
PHED/Athletic Department
Defined
Seniority is the number of years accrued by a full-time faculty member in the following order:
1. Full-time faculty position, teaching only 3-year contract.
2. Full-time faculty position, teaching/coaching 1-year contract.
3. Faculty position, assistant coach and/or part-time faculty.
Class Assignments
Determination of class assignments is as follows:

Technical Studies
1. Expertise, followed by seniority, will be the basis for determining summer loads.
2. If applicable, faculty are given partial loads before anyone receives a full load.
3. Seniority begins each summer with the first term.
Visual & Performing Arts
1. Summer loads will be designated based on the faculty members’ expertise within the subject area
they desire to teach. Should more than one instructor demonstrate equal amount of expertise,
seniority will prevail.
