Apart from the "standard structures" shown here, variations are also possible, e.g. with coating systems which have to fulfil special requirements. The most economical variants in the treatment of unfinished floors are impregnation and sealing. An appropriately prepared substrate is important for all coatings. Whether a simple priming coat, a scratch coat, a mortar covering or a levelling layer is to be considered depends on the condition of the substrate. 4 The different coating variants from roller coating through to sprinkle-finish covering facilitate a step-by-step increase in the layer thickness and therefore a corresponding increase in the mechanical resilience which is (low) to (extreme). classified as Detailed information about the chemical resistance of the coating surfaces is given in the table on pages 62/63. + ++++ Since an anti-slip surface is often required on industrial floors, a variable slip resistance is achieved on many coatings by using various materials and additives. This is described for the individual coating structures. Treatment of unfinished floors: Impregnation Transparent, low-viscosity epoxy resins. Floor coatings protect and maintain floors optimally only when the particular properties (such as elasticity or diffusion behaviour) are matched to the substrate present on the construction site. Consequently, various products may be necessary in preparing for the coating: Each material group has properties which must definitely be considered in the selection of coating systems – otherwise expensive complaints may result. Product Type of material For example, as concrete and cement floors, anhydrite and magnesite screeds need coating materials with good diffusion properties, whereas hard asphalt screed needs a coating that is more elastic. Not every floor needs a complicated coating structure. Depending on the condition and the stresses to be expected, better usage properties can be achieved even with relatively simple coatings. Particularly on fresh concrete floors and screeds which are not completely dried out, Disbopox 443 EP-Imprägnierung impregnation is a practicable solution, because it is open for diffusion and allows moisture to escape. At the same time it reduces the penetration of water and pollutants. The surface is consolidated and protected from abrasion and dust formation. Coloured sealing with the diffusion-compatible and emission-minimised Disbopox 442 GaragenSiegel garage sealant also ensures 10 visual enhancement. Coloured sealing can also be carried out with Disbopox 447 E.MI Wasserepoxid aqueous epoxy. This material is also suitable for wall surfaces and is extremely resistant to chemicals. An alternative to smooth sealing is the similarly emission-minimised Disbopox 468 EP-Strukturschicht texture coating. Its pimpled surface texture smoothes out slight visual irregularities in the substrate. In addition the aggregate it contains offers improved slip protection. NEW Not every finishing coat is suitable for vehicles with pneumatic or rubber tyres: "Plasticizer migration" may take place. For floors frequently stressed by tyres there are suitable coatings, now even emission-minimised, i.e. free from alkylphenol and benzylphenol. The substantial advantage of emission-minimised coatings lies in their wider applicability: They are suitable without restriction even for workplaces where more sensitive people are present. Disbopox 442 GaragenSiegel offers not only resistance to tyres, but furthermore, due to its carbon reinforcement, also high impact resistance, very good abrasion resistance and very good cleanability. Chemicals and occasional water exposure likewise leave few traces on the surface. Floors, which are also to fulfil higher visual requirements, can be enhanced with chip sprinkling and clear sealant. Coloured sealing can also be carried out with Disbopox 447 E.MI Wasserepoxid aqueous epoxy. This material is also suitable for wall surfaces and is extremely resistant to chemicals. 12 The Disbopox 453 Verlaufschicht self-levelling coat which also has good diffusion properties provides a perfect base for industrial floors for vehicular traffic. With Disbopox 468 EP-Strukturschicht texture coat, which is also suitable for stressing by fork-lift truck traffic, slip-resistant surfaces can be very easily produced using roller techniques. These surfaces too are insensitive to chemicals. Both coatings can be tinted on request in the colours of the FloorColor plus collection! The new emission-minimised all-round coating, Disboxid 421 E.MI Coat, takes this fact into account: Its formulation – free from alkylphenol and benzylphenol – ensures a more healthy working climate in the true sense of the word! Even the primer, Disboxid 420 E.MI Primer, is emission-minimised. With this transparent resin not only scratch coats, but also highly stressable mortar coats can be produced. It is also suitable as protection for fresh concrete. The pigmented Disboxid 421 E.MI Coat is a genuine all-round coating: Depending on the degree of resilience required, it can be implemented as a roller and self-levelling coating, self-levelling mortar and sprinkle-finish coating. 14 As all-round coatings on all concrete and cement screed floors, Disboxid 421 E.MI Coat not only withstands all the typical industrial stresses – and this even includes tested OS8 car-park floor coatings – it can also be employed in so-called "sensitive" areas, such as in hospitals and schools. Owing to its emission-minimised composition, Disboxid 421 E.MI Coat is also suitable for all areas in which the production and handling of foodstuffs is involved. Also this coating withstands aggressive cleaning agents and disinfectants. The coating can be tinted on request in the colours of the FloorColor plus collection! The hardest mechanical stresses include impacts such as from falling stampings or when setting down heavy goods. Only a coating with the necessary elasticity reserves can withstand this extreme stress in the long term. The elasticised, toughened polyurethane Disbothan 436 PU-Decksiegel surface sealant "springs back" under extreme stresses. Also vibrations caused by machine operations, are well absorbed by this coating. Apart from mineral floors, in the industrial field hard asphalt screeds are often employed. 18 Also for these substrates, the tough Disbothan 436 PU-Decksiegel is well-suited thanks to its elasticity – provided they conform at least to IC 15 hardness class and do not deform under the specified temperature and load stresses (e.g. ruts). In manufacturing and processing industries the floor is not always just subjected to mechanical stresses. Often aggressive chemicals are used for reasons of production or for cleaning purposes. Disboxid 444 Dickschicht thick coating is most suitable for this purpose: The specially modified amine hardener used in this formulation provides excellent resistance to chemicals. Mineral oils or fats, acids and alkalis, common solvents or continuous wetness: They all have no effect on this coating! Disboxid 994 Dickschicht-Noppenstruktur thick coating with pimpled texture also offers the advantage of a textured surface – ideal when the substrate is not completely even. 20 Both coatings also withstand mechanical stresses, such as fork-lift truck traffic. Due to its thixotropic formulation Disboxid 444 Dickschicht can also be used on walls which have to withstand frequent wetness or chemical stresses. Furthermore, Disboxid 444 Dickschicht and Disboxid 994 Dickschicht-Noppenstruktur bond excellently to metallic components and are well-suited for use on hard asphalt floors. NEW High-gloss surfaces may not be desirable in certain areas. Depending on the existing substrate and design criteria, silk matt transparent or coloured sealants are the optimum solution – particularly as these sealants are also emission-minimised: ideal for rooms with substantial public traffic. Emission-minimised floor coatings can even be applied in those rooms in which particularly sensitive people are later present! The silk matt transparent Disbopur 458 PUAquaSiegel aqueous sealant is the ideal finishing sealant for new floor coatings, which have, for example, been attractively designed with Disboxid 948 Color-Chips. 24 With the likewise silk matt Disbopur 459 PUAquaColor intact, unsightly old coatings can be quickly freshened up with appealing colours. Amongst the most important properties relevant in practice with both Disbopur sealants are the UV stability, chemical resistance and the improved scratch resistance of the coating underneath. Both materials in addition permit water-vapour diffusion! Due to its excellent properties Disbopur 459 PU-AquaColor was distinguished within the scope of the "Material Vision" international exhibition in the "Design Plus" competition and also received the Innovation Prize from the AIT. Electrostatic charge and discharge (ESD = Electrostatic Discharge) is a common phenomenon and the problems it causes are drawing ever more attention in the design of new production facilities and in the conversion of existing ones. Whereas in the past the main attention was on the prevention of damage due to electrostatic discharge when handling combustible or explosive substances, now the focus is on protecting electronic components. Since these components are becoming smaller and smaller, their sensitivity to electrostatic discharge is becoming more of a problem. It is generally accepted that electrically conductive or dissipative floor surfaces are needed. The relevant requirements are defined by various standards and measurement techniques. In the industrial field primarily coldcuring resin coatings are used, because only these floor coverings also fulfil the requirements on mechanical resilience. Caparol Building Protection offers well-proven, highly resilient, conductive and dissipative coating systems. 26 How does the ESD phenomenon occur? Electrostatic charging and discharging is an every-day phenomenon: Even brief contact between two bodies produces an electrostatic charge, which charges again on contact with a further body. Often just close proximity is sufficient for this effect, e.g. metallic objects! 1 Without mutual contact: The charge is equalised in both bodies (person and floor). For example, during movement on an unearthed surface a charge of approx. 6,000 V builds up, walking on a carpet produces 35,000 V and 26,000 V when removing air-cushion film. Electronic components are sometimes damaged or even destroyed by a discharge as low as 100 V! 2 With each contact between the foot and the floor negative charges change from the floor to the person and, vice versa, positive charges migrate from the person to the floor. Here, due to the large mass presented by the floor, the positive charges can distribute without hindrance. 3 Due to the limited mass of the person however, the negative charges cannot do that and they are forced to the outer limits, i.e. the surface of the person. 4 With each step the negative charge on the persons surface increases. When the "charged" person touches an object or another person, the excess negative charges "jump" over to the object or person, thereby causing the electrostatic discharge! 27 Caparol floor coatings for ESD floors Making the right decision: Which coating for which requirements? Appropriate standards define whether a conductive (formerly: ECF) floor or dissipative (formerly: DIF) floor is needed. Different coatings can be employed, depending on the requirements profile. The relevant requirements on the conductive values of the floor are defined by various standards and measurement techniques. Fig. 1: Measurement with 2.5 kg measuring electrode Fig. 2: Person – Shoe – Floor measurement DIN EN 61340-4-1 (VDE 0300 Part 4-1, version 12-2004) Relates exclusively to the standard test procedure for the determination of the electrical resistance of floor coverings and laid floors. It includes no classifications or requirements, but is rather a pure measurement standard. For the measurement the use of the international 2.5 kg measuring electrode is recommended (refer to Fig. 1). Up to 2002 the following classification was carried out in the version of 04-1997: ECF (Electrostatically Conducting Floor): ■ ECF (Elektrostatisch leitender Fußboden): RE < 1 x 106 Ω ■ DIF (Dissipative Floor): 1x106 Ω < RE < 1 x 109 Ω ■ ASF (Anti-Static Floor): Charging to < 2 kV DIN IEC 61340-5-1, Ed. 2.0 (VDE 0300 Part 5-1) Describes the general requirements for the protection of electronic components against electrostatic phenomena. ■ The measurement is made according to DIN EN 61340-4-1; the requirement on the floor is: RG < 1 x 109 Ω 28 Fig. 3: Walking Test measurement Fig. 4: Measurement with the three-foot electrode ■ With the system Floor - Shoes in combination with a person (short-form: "Person – Shoe – Floor") the following dissipative resistance is recommended as the principle measure taken for personal earthing: RG < 3,5 x 107 Ω DIN EN 1081 This replaced DIN 51953 in 1998 and describes the measurement with the three-foot electrode (Fig. 4). The resistance to ground (RG) is determined. Limits are not defined here. DIN EN 61340-4-5 (VDE 0300 Part 4-5, version 03-2005) (ESD STM 97.1-1999 and ESD STM 97.2-1999) Basis for the characterisation of this system "Floor – Footwear in combination with a person". DIN VDE 0100-410/T 610 Depending on the requirement, personal protection according to DIN VDE 0100-410/ T 610 must be considered. The insulation resistance is determined, which is required for the avoidance of dangerous body currents, in order to protect persons when dealing with high voltage on electrical systems. Test Method 1: Measurement of the electrical resistance for the system "Person – Shoe – Floor" (refer to Fig. 2). Test Method 2: Measurement of personal charging by means of the Walking Test (refer to Fig. 3). ■ If the system "Person – Shoe – Floor" is used, then one of the two following conditions must be satisfied: Total resistance of the system "Person – Shoe – Floor" RG ≤ 3,5 x 107 Ω or maximum potential generated on the body (Walking Test) < 100 V The following limits are defined: ■ RX ≥ 50 x 103 Ω when the nominal voltage of the system does not exceed 500 V. ■ RX ≥ 100 x 103 Ω when the nominal voltage of the system exceeds 500 V. "Conductive through and through": With Disbopox 971 ESD-Rollschicht a coating material is now available for the field of ESD floors which can be used multifunctionally in its areas of application. The general necessity for conductive or dissipative floor surfaces in the industrial sector is not disputed. In this respect the topic of ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) is becoming increasingly more important. With Disbopox 971 30 ESD-Rollschicht Caparol has a product which, due to its good diffusion properties, can be used on magnesite and anhydrite screeds. The lightly textured surface has a visually equalising effect, is abrasion-resistant and is easy to clean. A special highlight is that with Disbopox 971 ESD-Rollschicht the black conductive layer can be completely omitted. After laying the earth connections the coating can be applied directly to the prepared substrate. The product is therefore excellently suited to an uncomplicated and time-saving refurbishment of existing and intact dissipative industrial floor coatings. The floors in multi-story and underground car parks are subjected to a wide range of stresses. Apart from the mechanical stress from the driven vehicles, damage to the parking and driving surfaces from engine and transmission oils, fuels and, above all, gritting salt brought in during the winter, can occur. For protecting the surfaces cold-curing resin coatings are particularly suitable. In this respect some coating structures have been excellently proven in practice for the diverse possible coatings. There are different variants depending on the economical aspects, the frequency of use and the location of the building component. With the methods illustrated the main consideration is the cost/benefits ratio, because in many parking structures the economic aspect is an important and decisive criterion. 38 The illustrated structures conform to the DAfStb (German Committee for Structural Concrete) guidelines: ■ Disboxid Parkhaus-System OS 8 for covered, traffic areas without crack bridging. ■ Disboxid Parkhaus-System OS 8 E.MI for covered, traffic areas without crack bridging. Caparol systems for your car-park facility Make use of the comprehensive competence from Caparol to improve the economy of your building. 40 Longer maintenance intervals Kosten Coating Extend expensive maintenance intervals – the lower soiling tendency of special coatings such as Amphibolin from Caparol make this possible. The comparison with cheaper wall paints in building paint sales shows that with Amphibolin about 50 % more service life can be expected due to the smooth surface structure of its coating. Laboratory experiments on the soiling tendency indicate: The smooth surface of Amphibolin gives improved cleanability and simultaneously less tendency to soiling. Reduction of closure time Wall and ceiling coats produce potential savings of 10–15 % solely on the manufacturing costs of the coating measures. This value is achieved by a 50 % longer lifetime of the material. Therefore, a complete service interval is saved in the course of the life cycle of the multi-storey or underground car park. Life-cycle costs Standard refurbishment 13.75 % less costs with Amphibolin due to saving a complete renovation interval Time Chart of a sample estimate: Normal life cycle: 4 refurbishments. Coating with Amphibolin: only 3 refurbishments. Savings: 10–15 % Macro-image of standard building wall paint, Wet Abrasion Class 3: Open surface structure susceptible to soiling. Macro-image of Amphibolin, Wet Abrasion Class 1: Smooth surface: low tendency to soiling, improved cleanability. Long-term customer retention Develop long-term bonding of your customers to your car park facility – bright, visually attractive surroundings ensure frequent customer usage and a high level of satisfaction in the long term. A clear infrastructure with clearly marked, well-protected parking and driving surfaces, bright wall and ceiling surfaces and, not least, a clear, appealing colour design: The feeling of security and well-being for your customers is significantly enhanced by suitable materials, systems and colour concepts. The Caparol ColorDesignStudio offers you complete design concepts in unison with the technical necessities and possibilities facilitated by the coating systems. 41 Economical coating solutions for multi-storey and underground car parks Energy saving on lighting With an Amphibolin coating verifiable savings can also be achieved with regard to energy costs. The reason for this is the higher light index of the paint which is positively reflected in the lower electricity costs for the lighting. For the same lighting there are clear differences between a standard building paint and the highly reflecting Amphibolin wall paint: Measurements and calculations with a lighting manufacturer have demonstrated that Amphibolin at the useful level of a sample car-park facility produces 10 lux more brightness. 10 lux (30 %) more brightness due to Amphibolin = energy saved on lighting Brightness/lux Save up to 30 %! Due to longer service intervals and cost reductions for lighting, you can save up to one third of these operating costs during the life cycle of a car-park facility. 42 Seams and joints to rising structural parts: Details, when it matters! With floors in multi-storey and underground car parks it is particularly important to pay attention to the proper implementation of points of detail. This includes primarily building expansion joints and joints to rising building components. Apart from the conventional methods and materials for providing channels and for the joint sealing compound, there are also prefabricated profile sections which elastically seal the expansion joints watertight. The illustrated practical examples represent basic solutions. For the majority of cases occurring in practice these detail implementations can be applied directly or with slight building-specific modifications. Here, the Aletsch white series itself with a total of seven shades fulfils even extraordinary architectonic demands. Shades such as warm, cool or natural white have a noble, classically modern radiance and are versatile in application – for example in living areas, foyers, show rooms and office areas. You can always make the best use of the interior of the room – a full-coloured armchair is particularly well set in the scene on a white floor and cannot escape being noticed. A special plus: With the emission-minimised coating, Disbopur 459 PU-AquaColor, which has received many awards and is pollutanttested and monitored by the Technical Control Board, floors can be obtained that are stable to UV – an important factor for all surfaces with a high level of incident light. Rewarded: The floor coating Disbopur 459 PU-AquaColor from Caparol was distinguished with an Innovation Prize for Architecture and Flooring at the trade show Domotext/Contractworld in Hanover. In addition the product, which was tested by the AgBB (Committee for Health-related Evaluation of Building Products), received the "Design Plus" distinction at the "Material Vision 2009" trade fair. 50 The illustrated colours are produced in the printing process and therefore slight deviations may be possible compared to the original colours. Also the type and structure of the substrate as well as the surroundings and lighting conditions can affect the colour. FloorColor plus | Disboxid ArteFloor-System Sensational coatings for appealing interiors Whether subtly tone-on-tone or colour combinations with contrast: The Disboxid ArteFloor-System leaves plenty of room for creativity. With the Disboxid ArteFloor-System an organically acting, very individual surface is produced on a coloured floor coating with a classical glaze application in different shades. The use of glaze makes any floor unique. The wide variety of possible combinations of undercoat colours and glaze colours facilitates decorative surfaces. Disboxid ArteFloor displays its remarkable effect particularly in foyer areas, showrooms and high-class sales rooms. Also museums and art galleries profit from the charisma of this floor coating. Many layered: The Disboxid ArteFloor-System creates individual, sensational floor coatings. 51 Caparol coatings and decorative systems for floors FloorColor plus | Disboxid MultiColor-System For living hard-wearing floors with style The Disboxid MultiColor-System connects the high utilisation value of Caparol floor coatings with the attractiveness of polished stone floors. This colour effect is achieved by the Disboxid 957 MultiColor-Chips. The floors are both sensational and colourful, giving high-gloss, high-class surfaces. Ten Classic, six Nature and four Trend colours here offer ample design leeway for coating impressive interiors as well as balconies, patios and arcades. New: All colours in the Disboxid MultiColorSystem can also be stylishly enhanced with gold and silver glimmer. Radiant: The polished stone look of the Disboxid MultiColor-System gives highly attractive floors. 52 The illustrated colours are produced in the printing process and therefore slight deviations may be possible compared to the original colours. Also the type and structure of the substrate as well as the surroundings and lighting conditions can affect the colour. FloorColor plus | Disboxid StoneColor-System Full of nuances, colourful, naturally robust The Disboxid StoneColor-System gives floors with a subtly colourful, natural matt and textured surface a distinctive, attractive look. This is achieved through the combination of well-proven floor coatings and an unusual sprinkling material: coloured broken-slate flakes. The flake-shaped pieces "float" on the surface so that a natural stone surface feel is obtained. The technical properties of the coating are retained, whereas the surface scores points with the required slip-resistance and colours. The material can be easily cleaned despite the textured surface. Three Classic, two Nature and two Trend colours offer highly attractive design variants in a very robust version for many applications in the field of balconies, marketing and sales rooms through to industrial floors. Structured: The Disboxid StoneColor-System is impressive with its naturally distinctive surfaces. 53 Service – consultancy & design Caparol planning and property consultants Supporting, advising, implementing In particular with larger properties, a capable partner is essential for consultation and implementation. CAD detailed drawings are available in various formats for download. Through the information module you have access to all the current media data on Caparol materials. Apart from Technical Information and Safety Data Sheets, there are also, for example, approvals, test results and also brochures. www.capadata.de 55 Service – consultancy & design Caparol ColorDesignStudio Our lives would be tedious without colour Colours create atmospheres, provide identification and orientation. In architecture, apart from pure surface protection, paint also takes on a significant styling function and determines its expression. Irrespective of whether material appearance or coating systems are involved, a coloured image of a place always arises which influences the impression that is retained. Service for architects The ColorDesignStudio consists of a team of master painters, colour designers, interior designers, architects and multimedia designers. In recent years it has developed into an important service facility at Caparol. The emphasis of the work is in the architectural colour design (facade and interior) as well as in developing product and colour collections. The dialogue with architects, designers and scientific institutions is an important fundamental aspect of the work carried out by the team. 56 Architectural colour concepts The range of styled properties extends from single buildings, street fronts, housing estates through to industrial structures and impressive buildings. The primary objective is always to interpret the architecture with material and paints, to accentuate it and improve it. Apart from the structural specifications of the building in the facade and interior sections, information, designs and impressions from the architect and building owner are of decisive importance for the development of colour concepts. Building examples Colour design layout Design visualisation Implementation Design aids – 3D CONCEPT With 3D CONCEPT it has been possible to create a convincing design aid. It does not present a collection of individual colours, but rather colour concepts which are also known as colour harmonies. These concepts or harmonies involve practical suitable colour compilations, consisting of five colours. Each colour is intended for a certain building element and accordingly the five colour areas vary in their size. Due to the different proportions of area, transfer to the actual building or room to be designed is significantly easier. 57 Service – consultancy & design Design aids Boxes and colour fans Boxes BUILDING PROTECTION BOX First, show what it might look like: The BUILDING PROTECTION BOX is an innovative consultancy aid, specially compiled for the coating of floor areas in industry and commerce. With many original surfaces. The building protection sample box consists of three surface modules with different application-related contents. The emphasis is on coating floor surfaces. There is a wide spectrum of original surfaces: It extends from basic coating structures through to complete coating systems for special fields of application. And in the field of decorative coatings all colours of the FloorColor plus collection are also shown – as a strip of paint or as a printed sample. Another advantage in consultancy meetings: The BUILDING PROTECTION BOX also contains original surfaces and paint strips from the concrete glaze and roof coating sectors. This means that all the design options for the coating of floors, concrete facades and roofs are available – all in one box. The three modules with their contents: The General Interior Building Protection module comprises original surfaces with basic structures for floor coatings as well as special coating systems for multi-storey and underground car parks. In addition, all colour collections from the FloorColor plus colour consultancy aid are present as a colour card: Color-Chips, standard colours, white series, colour families, ArteFloor system, MultiColor system and StoneColor system. Now the full extent of the extraordinary design possibilities can be appreciated. 58 The Building Protection Interior Floor Coatings Module contains original surfaces for special fields of application in interiors, including displays of various system structures for industrial floors and surface examples for the decorative coating structures, Disboxid ArteFloor-System, Disboxid MultiColor-System and Disboxid StoneColor-System. It also includes an example of the recently introduced white series. The General Exterior Building Protection module contains original surfaces for the outside area, including coating systems for balconies and arcades as well as surface examples for the decorative coating systems Disboxid MultiColor and Disboxid StoneColor for outdoors. In addition: Original surfaces and colour cards from the fields of roof coating and concrete glaze are included. The building protection sample box is therefore ideal as an aid in consultancy meetings and for the development of design concepts. It can be ordered through the Caparol Shop in the internet for a small charge: www.caparol-shop.de. The three different surface modules an also be obtained separately. BOX OF COLOUR FANS The BOX OF COLOURED FANS accommodates a comprehensive repertoire of colour fans and product collections.
