 Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Brigham Young University Overview BYU’s graduate and undergraduate entrepreneurship programs were recently ranked No. 2 and No. 7 respectively by the Princeton Review in Entrepreneur magazine. Much of what is accomplished in the realm of entrepreneurship and innovation at BYU is championed primariy by the Rollins Center. We inspire confidence, courage, and the will to take the entrepreneurial first step. We create an environment that unleashes creativity, cultivates vision and innovation, and teaches the governing principles that are the foundation of every successful enterprise. We provide mentors who guide students as they navigate these new waters. We establish courses, lecture series, competitions, conferences, workshops, and other activities that nourish and sustain the entrepreneurial spirit in students. The Rollins Center has helped spawn many successful businesses including Omniture which sold to Adobe for $1.8 billion dollars. Curriculum We believe that excellence in academics will lead to excellence in practice. Our teaching philosophy is that an academic program should be designed around a solid core model that is practical, applied, and uses active learning techniques. We believe that the mentoring model is key to entrepreneurship and innovation, and thus we design curriculum around this philosophy. Additionally, we believe that a world‐class education requires top‐notch academic research, thus we actively support and encourage A‐quality research. Our entrepreneurship and innovation faculty is among the most well‐known and respected in their discipline in the nation. CLUBS & ORGS  Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization (CEO) | http://ceo.byu.edu/ | A chapter of a larger national organization, the club provides its members with opportunities to network and learn from each other and seasoned, highly successful entrepreneurs from the local area and around the nation and world.  Engineering & Technology Startup (ETS) | http://etstartup.org/ | Engineering and Technology Startup (ETS) is an organization, hosted by BYU’s Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology, that fosters and supports the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship by providing students with opportunities to apply the knowledge, skills and talents they possess to create valuable products.  Students for Social Entrepreneurship (SSE) | http://studentsforsocent.org/ | A group of students dedicated to the establishment and growth of the field of social entrepreneurship. The group offers educational events, internships, and networking opportunities for its members.  Web Startup Group (WSG) | http://webstartupgroup.com/ | A group for students interested in starting and running tech and web‐based businesses. The group meets regularly and helps its members network and learn from each other’s successes and failures. COMPETITIONS & EVENTS  Business Model Competition (BMC) | http://BusinessModelCompetition.com/ | The first, international business model competition in the world, the BMC encourages students to ‘get outside the building’ and test their business model through customer validation and pivoting.  Business Plan Competition (BPC) | http://bpc.byu.edu/ | One of the first and largest such competitions in the nation, the BPC awards over $100,000 in cash and prizes to its winners which include 1‐800‐CONTACTS, Property Solutions Inc., and Alianza, among many other notable companies.  Crexendo Website Competition | http://up.crexendo.com/byu | The Crexendo Website Competition allows students to test their hand at creating e‐commerce or lead generation websites. Participants are not only judged on the overall idea and traction their site experiences during the competition, but also on how well they implement SEO and other internet marketing strategies.  Entrepreneurship Week | http://eweek.byu.edu/ | A week‐long series of events to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation across campus. Events include a community networking event, speed pitch event, mentoring extravaganza, and entrepreneurial competitions offered simultaneously throughout the many colleges on the campus.  Mobile App Competition | http://mobileapp.byu.edu/ | The Mobile App Competition promotes student involvement in the popular and rapidly‐growing mobile business industry. The purpose of the competition is to provide BYU students with a forum to showcase the unique mobile apps they are creating and cash prizes in a variety of categories to reward them for their efforts.  Social Venture Competition (SVC) | http://marriottschool.byu.edu/socialventure/ | The SVC promotes innovative solutions to social problems. Student participants work with faculty, practitioners, and professionals to innovate, build, and inspire as they develop and implement sustainable ventures.  Student Entrepreneur of the Year (SEOY) | SEOY is a competition to recognize the most successful, student‐
founded businesses on BYU’s campus. Past winners include many successful enterprises including Allegiance which was recently ranked #58 overall on the Inc. 500 and #5 in the software category.  Student Innovator of the Year (SIOY) | http://etstartup.org/sioy | The SIOY competition at BYU enables students to make their creative ideas for a physical product a reality. Students are granted a series of loans to develop prototypes for their products which they showcase at the competitions final event.  Utah Startup Marketplace (USM) | http://usm.byu.edu/ | Utah Startup Marketplace is a singular opportunity for Utah's premier startups to connect with BYU's talented student base in a targeted job/internship fair environment.  Utah Student 25 (US25) | http://UtahStudent25.com/ | Utah Student 25 is an awards & recognition program that ranks the top student‐founded businesses in the state of Utah according to profits and revenues similar to the Inc. 500. OTHER RESOURCES  Mentoring Program | http://GetMentoring.com/ A website set up to support BYU’s Venture Mentoring Services program. The site allows students and mentors to meet, network, and cultivate meaningful relationships.
