The purpose of this booklet is to provide
RVN~
Field Personnel with orientation
material, ineludine charActeristics and capabilities on "'liar Material used by the Viet
Cong in South Vietnam".
This booklet will enable ueing personnel to report items of
capture with ereater accuracy.
The first edition of this publication, "Weapone, Ammu-
niti(\n, Mines and Booby Traps used by the Viet Cong South of the 17th Parallel", was
published in August. 1963.
Included in this second edition are many items of eneDt\"
meter!al not present in the first edition, as well as some additional data on items
whieh appeared in the firAt edition.

The 1.65mm pistol, Model 1927 is a reooil
operate d and simple weapon. The pistol fires
1.65mm Brownin g Ammunition (.32 Colt Automa tio
Pistol) . The barrel is placed in the same manner
as the Brownin g pistol and its firing mechanism
is pattern ed after the pooket size Mauser pistol.

The Russian 7.62 I11III Mossin- Nagant Carbine Model
1944 1s squippe d w ith a bayonet (foldin g). I t 1s
adopted as a basio weapon like the Carbins M.19:38
(elloept for the folding bayonet ) and is used to replace the 7.62mm Mossin- Nagant Rifls Model 1891/:30,
a standar d shoulde r type weapon of the ground forcea.
The Mossin- Nagant Carbine 1'1.1944 is perman ently
equippe d with a bayonet which can fold and unfold
(the bayonet folds to the rear, on the r:4!:ht aide
of the weapon) .
Both typea of Carbine model 19:38 and modal 1944
fire single shot and are loaded by a olip of 5 rds.
"hen the cartrid ge is pushed into the chambe r, the
bol t oloses up. The weapon and the bolt are locked
and put at the safety positio n by pulling the bolt
to the rear and to the left approxi mately :30 degrees
until the small lug of the bolt seats on the lsft
edge of the reoeive r.

Chicom 7.62mm Mossin-Nagant Carbine 110del 53.Thisweapon is a direct copy of the Soviet 7.62mm Carbine.
However, there are some distinguishing features between t.he 2 types of weapons acoording to an identification and comparison of the technique of manufacture.

This is a high cyclic rate weapon that oan be fired
either full or semi-au tomatic dependi ng on the
change of positio n of the fire lever located above
the trigger guard. To fire full automa tic, push the
fire lever forward , to fire semi-au tomatic push it
to the rear. The weapon is fired with its bolt open.
When the magazin e is inserte d into the weapon
and seats in place, the weapon is ready to cock.
The weapon has a mecal stock (that can be removec:U
which is identic al in dimensi on and model to that of
the French MAT 49 Submac hine gun (instea d of wooden
stock like the origina l K.50/PP SH.41.)

The 7.62 DPM Atutom atic Rifle is gas operate~
and air cooled automa tic weapon . It is issued as the
basic fire power for an infuntr y squad and fires automatic ally only. Its gas cylinde r, hO'.ieve r, has ;
differe nt size ge.'3 ports which permits changin g of
the rate of fire. The DPM Automa tic Rifle operate s
from an. open bol t. The bolt and receive r are des igned
in such e. manner that the firing pin cannot strij(e the
percuss ion cap of the cartrid ge untU the bolt is locKed.
The above weapon is used with a drum magazin e
plaoed on the receive r. A bipod is fixed to the barrel. In additio n, this weapon has a safety on the

Before throwin g, fu'lDl,y hold the wooden handle
and the parachu te look, then pullou t the pin from
the handle and throw the grenade .
When thrown, the spring pulls the parachu te
cone (C) to the rear and the parachu te deploys .
The paraohu te will stabili ze the direoti on of the
grenade and assure proper impact attitud e on the
target. At the same time the oone (C) moves
rearwar d and the spring pulls the safet;y pin out
of the grenade and allows the firing pin to strike
the detonat or.
Upon impaot, due to the inertia , the firing
pin strikes the detonat or and explode s the grenade .

During movement, the ignition devioe is not
linked to the explosive, but upon arriving at the
prescribed sabotage site, these two components are
then connected, and the watch of the ignition device is preset.
The VC have also adapted another firing device, using bicycle generator power. Thus, during
movement, the generator is kept apart from the
wheel. When arriving at the sabotage site, the head
of the generator is placed against the bicycle
wheel. When someone operates the bicycles, its
generator sends a spark up the ignition line and
initiates the explosive.

a dark painted case. It is a modit1ed grenade
equipped with 1 iron (or tin) 1\18 on i til body.
Its operation is similar to a homemade grenade •
When the safet,. ring is pulled out, the spring is
released and the tiring pin strikes the primer and
detonates the mine.
