Car Park Permits are available for all employees to purchase: Staff Annual Car Park Permit £60 per annum Staff Premium Car Park Permit £120 per annum Alternatively there is a Pay & Display option as follows: £1.00 all day (with Purple Permit). 50p for 3 hours (no return in 2 hours). Sickness Absence Benefits Middlesbrough College offers generous occupational sickness benefits for those employees who are unfortunately unwell. The benefits include: Excellent sickness benefits, increasing with the length of employment. Supportive Return to Work Meetings for those returning after sickness absence. Staff Appraisal Middlesbrough College has an annual Staff Appraisal Scheme for all employees including hourly paid employees working six hours or more per week. The Staff Appraisal process helps the College measure how its employees perform in their roles and looks to also measure the employee‟s impact on Learning, Teaching & Assessment as well as ensuring that targets set are achieved to the benefit of the organisation and the employee. All relevant policies are consulted and agreed with the College‟s recognised Trade Unions at the Joint Consultation and Negotiation Committee (JCNC). Page 12 of 35 Child Care Voucher Scheme Employees with babies, toddlers or school aged children can access Child Care Vouchers through a Salary Sacrifice Scheme operated by Edenred. Edenred provide a flexible and user-friendly service for the purchasing of Child Care Vouchers and these pre-tax salary deductions can help employees make considerable savings on the cost of child care. Expectant Parents Meetings Middlesbrough College offers a generous package for those employees expecting a child, whether they are looking to take Adoption, Maternity or Paternity Leave. The range and value of the benefits are generous but do depend on the length of service with the College. All Expectant Parents are invited to meet with their Human Resources Business Partner, where Expectant Parents will be advised of: Their role, rights and responsibilities at all stages. Key and important information on pay, timescales and notice periods. Entitlement to any Adoption, Maternity or Paternity Pay. Every Expectant Parent receives an Expectant Parent Pack which is a wealth of information and some key documentation and the College seeks to ensure that every expectant parent has as much information as possible at this very special time. Flexible Working Requests Middlesbrough College acknowledges that employees do have the right to apply to work flexibly and has a duty to consider any request seriously, with examples being flexible working including a change in working hours or working flexi-time etc. Flexible Working usually means a change to the normal pattern of work in order to achieve a more effective balance between home and work commitments. Page 13 of 35 Page 13 of 35 Fostering Leave Middlesbrough College makes provision for those employees who may wish to embark on Fostering which normally means caring for a child or young person that is in the care of the local authority. Whilst there is no statutory right to time off work for Foster Carers, the College acknowledges that the requirements of Foster Carers are significant in establishing new relations and in developing new routines. The College already has generous provisions for parents and adopters. Fostering is different from Adoption and hence the College has different arrangements for Foster Carers. Leave of Absence Scheme Middlesbrough College has a generous Leave of Absence Scheme which allows for time away from work to cover unusual circumstances. The most important component of a Leave of Absence is that the employee‟s employment continues during the period of absence. Where the Leave of Absence Scheme does not cover a particular circumstance the employee may consider alternative options such as Annual Leave, Time off in Lieu (TOIL) or unpaid time off. Any request is subject to the Line Manager‟s approval. Depending on the circumstances, an employee normally continues to receive the same access to other benefits; however in the event of unpaid leave the employee should take advice relating to their Occupational Pension implications. Maternity Leave Middlesbrough College considers full Maternity Leave entitlement to be fifty-two weeks during which time the employee is entitled to benefit from the Terms & Conditions of the Contract of Employment that would have applied had the employee not been absent except in relation to the payment of salary. Employees are encouraged to engage with the “Keep in Touch” days during the Maternity Leave period to enable the employee to attend work without losing the right to Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) or Contractual Maternity Pay. Employees should speak to their designated Human Resources Business Partner in the first instance, or further information can be obtained from the Human Resources Department or via the Human Resources Handbook (Policies & Procedures). Page 14 of 35 Paternity Leave Employees who are partners of pregnant women or adopters are entitled to access the College‟s Paternity Leave benefits subject to eligibility and this is in addition to the right to Parental Leave. Such employees are entitled to up to ten working days‟ time off taken in one block of five or ten days on a pro rata basis. Paternity Leave can only be taken following the birth of the child or placement of the child for adoption and not before. Page 15 of 35 Page 15 of 35 Green Travel Benefits Middlesbrough College is committed to combating climate change and seek to adopt ecofriendly services and provisions where possible. This includes promoting and supporting employees who chose to travel to work using a green travel option. Corporate Season Rail Card Middlesbrough College employees who chose to travel to work via train can purchase a Corporate Season Rail Card and this can include up to twelve weeks‟ free train travel including weekends with the purchase of an annual season ticket. Cycle to Work Scheme Middlesbrough College has just launched a “Cycle to Work” Scheme for those who wish to access a cycle through a Hire Purchase Scheme, for the purpose of travelling to work and further information is available on the link below. Staff Portal / Public / Human Resources / Employee Benefits, Rewards & Recognition Electric Vehicle Charging Middlesbrough College has a number of Electric Vehicle Charging (EV Charging) points as follows: - Vulcan Street Car Park (Car Park A) (one point). - South Car Park (Car Park D) (one point). In order to utilise the EV Charging, drivers must ensure they comply with the College‟s Car Parking arrangements with a valid Car Parking Permit and / or Pay and Display ticket. Further details can be obtained from the College‟s Main Reception. Page 16 of 35 Secure Bike Storage The College provides two forms of secured storage for cyclists to store their bikes. Secured lockers are individual lockers that can be hired. The Annual Fee is £21 or alternatively employees can make a monthly payment of £1.75 per month. Shared cycle storage area is next to MC6. A one-off refundable deposit of £5 is required so that the D Lock and an Access Card can be issued for employees. More information is available from Facilities Management Helpdesk. Page 17 of 35 Page 17 of 35 Health & Well Being Benefits Middlesbrough College believes good employee health and well-being are key drivers for organisational performance and this can be achieved by offering employees a range of health and well-being benefits, which increases motivation and can have an equally positive impact on the productivity and effectiveness of the College. Responsibility for health and well-being at work belongs to both employers and employees. The College was awarded the Gold Standard by the North East‟s Better Health at Work Scheme and has been recently awarded the Continuing Excellence Award which supersedes the Gold Standard. In addition the College is part of the Tees Valley‟s Extra Life Programme to improve employee well-being in four large employers across Middlesbrough. Critical Illness Policy Middlesbrough College will offer support to any employee suffering from a diagnosed critical illness including terminal illness. Further information and support is available from the Human Resources Business Partner and in any event the situation will be handled compassionately, sensitively and confidentially where possible. Flu Vaccine Middlesbrough College offers its employees free Flu Vaccines (Flu Jab) in October and / or November each year as the College recognises that the Flu Vaccine does work and can help prevent people you getting flu. However it will not stop all flu viruses and the level of protection may vary between people. Information about the free Flu Vaccine is communicated to all staff via the Staff Portal and appointments are made via the Human Resources Department. Page 18 of 35 Fitness Studio Membership Middlesbrough College‟s Fitness Studio is equipped with the latest Technogym exercise equipment with UNITY touch screen technology and internet. Staff can benefit from subsidised membership of £10 per month with payment made through payroll deductions. Qualified and experienced Gymworld Instructors. Health Needs Assessment As part of Middlesbrough College‟s commitment to the well-being of its employees, it regularly undertakes College Health Needs Assessments to evaluate any workplace health issues. The Health Needs Assessments are undertaken via surveys and focus groups and the results of the Health Needs Assessments are presented to the College Leadership Team and appropriate actions are considered to improve health and well-being of employees. Health Screenings / Procedures From time to time employees may be required to attend appointments for health screening or medical procedures including ante-natal check-up, diabetic checks, hospital / consultant appointments, medical procedures / assessments. Page 19 of 35 Page 19 of 35 Health Plan (Simplyhealth) Middlesbrough College employees can access Simplyhealth Health Plan via regular deductions from their salary and is a scheme that helps employees access affordable healthcare and they aim to deliver exceptional personal customer service. Simplyhealth has over three million customers and helps nearly four million people including 20,000 companies who choose them as their healthcare provider. Simplyhealth now also includes Denplan, the UK's largest provider of dental plans, which helps nearly two million people to access dental care and treatment. Occupational Counselling From time to time some employees may require Counselling which is an external face to face service offering employees a confidential and accessible service. This service is provided by professionally qualified and experienced Counsellors who provide a safe environment for those seeking to alleviate distress normally linked with work within a reasonably short period of time (up to six sessions). Referral for Occupational Counselling is via an employee‟s designated Human Resources Business Partner. Occupational Health Employees may be referred to Occupational Health for one of the following reasons: - Pre-employment screening. To identify any support strategies for employee with a declared health condition. To assess if an employee is fit to be at work. To be assessed for Ill Health Retirement. Middlesbrough College has two Occupational Health providers to provide professional medical assessments for staff: Occupational Health Advisor (OHA) based at Teesside University. The Occupational Health Advisor is a qualified and experienced Occupational Health Nurse and provides a professional assessment of employee‟s current health conditions and makes appropriate recommendations. Occupational Health Physician (MEDACS) MEDACS are qualified and experienced physicians and/or doctors and referrals to MEDACS is where a more complicated Health Assessment or confirmation of diagnosis is required or to be assessed for Ill Health Retirement. Any referrals to Occupational Health are made via the College‟s Human Resources Business Partners. Page 20 of 35 Physiotherapy Service (MC Therapy) MC Therapy is a College service for employees, students and the wider community and its aim is to return the employee to their chosen sport, place of work or activities of daily living. It offers advice and instruction on exercise to alleviate injuries and strengthen or protect the area of the body where an injury has occurred. MC Therapy can assist with sports injuries, spinal problems, soft tissue injuries, work related problems, post-surgery rehabilitation and postural problems. Staff Well-Being Events / Initiatives Each year, Middlesbrough College commits to undertake a number of health and well-being initiatives for employees and includes (not an exhaustive list) Women‟s Cancer (Wear It Pink), Men‟s Cancer (Movember), Cold and Flu Awareness, Healthy Heart and Stress Awareness. Armed Service Volunteer Camp Middlesbrough College acknowledges the benefits of some employees being part of the Territorial / Reservist Armed Services and that they may be required to regularly attend a volunteer camp. Requests are normally considered where the period of leave does not interfere with College business. Graduation Leave Middlesbrough College recognises that employees who have recently undertaken a programme of study and subsequently successfully achieved an academic qualification may be invited to attend a graduation ceremony. NUS Extra Card Middlesbrough College employees are entitled to purchase a NUS Extra Card from the College‟s Student Services. The NUS (National Union of Students) is a voluntary membership organisation which is a Confederation of 600 student unions, which Middlesbrough College is one of and the NUS Extra Card entitles employees to discounts across a variety of retailers. Public Duties Middlesbrough College recognises the value that employees who undertake public duties may bring to the College and employees who hold such positions including Magistrates, Councillors, Governors and other public roles may access some paid time off work. Page 22 of 35 Recognised Trade Unions Middlesbrough College works closely in recognition with three Trade Unions. The Principal / Chief Executive and a number of the College Leadership Team regularly meet with the Trade Unions to consult, negotiate and agree any collective agreements, terms and conditions and policies or procedures affecting employment. Workforce Development Middlesbrough College offers a range of workforce development opportunities throughout the year and some of this training will be mandatory and other training is optional. There is a wide variety of in house activities and training available to all staff delivered by both guest speakers and staff experts in their field and attendance at these Workforce Development events allow employees to accrue Continuous Professional Development (CPD) hours. In-house training events can be found via the Colleges Online Workforce Development Booking system. For external events, employees will need to complete the External Events Pro-forma which is available on the Workforce Development section of the Staff Portal. Workforce Development Staff Discount Scheme There may be times when the College‟s Professional Development Scheme cannot fund a course that a member of staff wishes to pursue as it does not fall within one of the priority areas. To encourage a learning culture within the College, all staff are entitled to apply for support for 20% of the courses fees, up to a maximum of £300 per year. All staff are invited to put bids forward between April and June to the Workforce Development Manager for any qualifications to commence in the following academic year. This scheme is managed by a panel consisting of Assistant Principal - Teaching & Learning / Curriculum Development, Assistant Principal - Human Resources, a Trade Union Representative and the Workforce Development Manager. The panel meets in June to agree which applications are approved. Page 25 of 35 Page 25 of 35 Professional Development Scheme The College has established a fund to support, on a priority basis, those staff who are seeking to enhance their professional qualifications in relation to their employment with the College. This scheme is managed by a panel consisting of Assistant Principal - Teaching & Learning / Curriculum Development Assistant Principal - Human Resources, a Trade Union Representative and the Workforce Development Manager. All contracted staff are able to apply for financial assistance for long-term courses leading to a formal qualification through the Professional Development Scheme. These include Degree level courses, Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) / Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Subject Specialism Level 5 in English or Maths, Management Development, Assessment and Verification Awards and all other professional level programmes. The College‟s Lecturing Hourly Paid and Claim Basis Support staff, who are engaged to work, will be supported (proportionate to annual teaching hours completed) with any Teacher Training programmes, Subject Specialism Level 5 English or Maths and Assessment and Verification Awards. Following Line Manager support, applications and discussions with the Workforce Development Manager will be detailed in individual letters of acceptance. All supported qualifications must meet the business needs of the College when presenting dissertations / extended study assignments and staff should consult with Line Managers regarding such topics. The scheme covers the following items of expenditure: All Tuition Fees for the duration of the course. Some necessary residential costs. All staff are invited to put bids forward between April and June with the support of their Line Manager to the Workforce Development Manager for any Professional Qualifications to commence in the following academic year. The panel meets in June to prioritise the applications against the college business needs. Any applications received for Higher Education, such as Masters, will need to provide evidence of delivering teaching on Higher Education courses successfully for a minimum of one year. The applicants are notified of the outcome along with the terms and conditions prior to the September enrolment. Page 26 of 35 Management Development Programme Middlesbrough College‟s Management Development Programme (MDP) is for all College managers and aspiring managers and includes units on strategic overview, funding and finance, managing people and employer engagement. Employees should discuss the Management Development Programme with their Line Managers as part of their Staff Appraisal. Employees who wish to attend the Management Development Programme should register their interest with the Workforce Development Manager once it has been agreed with the Line Manager. Advanced Practitioner Programme Middlesbrough College acknowledges that in the ever increasing challenging and demanding world of Learning, Teaching & Assessment, satisfactory teaching is not acceptable. Ofsted states „There is nowhere to hide’ and therefore it is a necessity not a luxury for all Teachers to strive to achieve Advanced Practitioner Status. The Advanced Practitioner Programme starts with exploring exactly what does advanced practice look like and how can cutting edge professional teachers best serve the complex needs of individual students. Progression through the Single Spine Scale from points 11.1 to 14 is dependent on the achievement of the Advanced Practitioner Programme as well as meeting a grade 1 or a grade 2 in the annual Staff Appraisal. This three day programme is transformational and thought provoking which enables lecturers to experience what 21st century teaching is about. Professional Updating Professional Updating is an excellent opportunity for staff to return to their professional / vocational industry to update their experience and skills. Exceptional Contribution Award At the end of each academic year, the College considers whether there have been any employees who may be eligible for an Exceptional Contribution Award. Golden Hello Scheme Middlesbrough College‟s Golden Hello Scheme is part of a range of the Employee Benefits Package to encourage new Lecturers and Instructor Demonstrators in priority subjects to train and take up teaching posts at Middlesbrough College. The Golden Hello Scheme is an essential tool to facilitate the recruitment and / or retention of those new to the role of Lecturer or Instructor Demonstrator in subject areas that are considered to be priority subjects. Topical matters can include the College‟s strategic position, financial update, information on enrolment and student numbers, Teaching & Learning developments, staffing matters, training plans and to also communicate any other developments. The end of the academic year Staff Conference also includes an Awards Ceremony for employees, called Reach Awards. Staff Council Middlesbrough College‟s Staff Council is a staff body who meets regularly with the Principal / Chief Executive and key College managers. The staff that participate in the Staff Council are nominated by their department to represent their opinions and interests. The Staff Council‟s main purpose is to serve as a voice for employees through representing their views on key topics. The Staff Council meets termly and minutes are published and widely circulated. Staff Survey Middlesbrough College undertakes an annual Staff Survey to capture the opinions and feedback from staff. The College recognises the importance that Staff Surveys bring including: - Recognition of the College‟s strengths and weakness in key areas such as understanding strategic priorities, overall employee satisfaction, local line management effectiveness and performance management. - Opportunity to improve performance by offering useful feedback on areas for improvement. - Specific benchmarks or norms to gain a better understanding of how the College compares to other Colleges. - Monitor trends over time to determine if improvement implementations are affecting desired areas for change. - Anonymising the survey to ensure an honest and insightful feedback about topics employees might not be comfortable bringing to managers in person. Page 31 of 35 Page 31 of 35 STAR Awards Middlesbrough College‟s STAR Awards are a key part of the Rewards & Recognition Scheme which aims to recognise any individual who may have carried out an act of help or support, acted unselfishly or gone above and beyond their normal duty. A STAR Award can be nominated confidentially by staff, students or external visitors to a bespoke email address (starawards@mbro.ac.uk) linked to a College Value and a certificate will be issued. This can be done at any time during the academic year to recognise and celebrate those who have gone the extra mile. The nominated employee will receive a certificate and a brief anonymised quote on why they have received the award which will be presented by their line manager. Overall winners of the STAR Awards are announced at the annual Staff Conference at the end of the academic year. Shop on the Street / Pit Stop Middlesbrough College‟s Shop On The Street is a hit with staff and students for those little things such as stationery products at low prices or employees can grab a sandwich and drink to keep them going; and leaving, check out what delights the students have made for your tea, all products for sale (subject to availability).
