Using a wireless connection, Scribe is always up to date - eliminating outdated & damaged textbooks, binders full of paper, and excessively heavy backpacks that can lead to back injuries. The goal was to design a product that would provide all students with the best learning experience, while addressing sustainability, safety, and accessibility. The design solution was a roll-up OLED touchscreen enclosed in a lightweight plastic housing. The flexible touchscreen will not crack or be damaged by liquid, which makes it ideal for school students. Scribe has a smooth shape, allowing for easy transportation, taking in & out of backpacks, cleaning, and safety. To begin use, the touchscreen is easily pulled open. When students are finished working, the screen is closed by turning the retraction knob, magnetically staying shut. Scribe was designed with minimal parts to prevent breaking and to reduce costs - although parts can be easily replaced if broken. The OLED screen and lithium-ion battery are both energy efficient, providing power that will last all day long, year after year. Scribe is charged through its USB port, which requires no special accessories or adaptors. The Interface is designed to help students manage and complete schoolwork while also staying connected to their school classes. Teachers can wirelessly update students calendars, due dates, current grades, class announcements, readings, and assignments. Using the preloaded apps, students are provided with learning resources and digital textbooks to complete their work. While the screen can be used by fingertouch, there is also a stylus integrated into the handle for written assignments or for drawing. Simple home/power and volume buttons on the handle do not interfere with the on-screen activity. After an assignment is completed, students can submit their work using Scribe, or send it to other devices (printers, USB drives, phones, etc.) via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Scribe uses an interface similar to current smartphones and tablets, so there is no need for adaption. Scribe can be personalized with optional language, text size, brightness, and text-to-speech commands, making it accessible to students regardless of their ability or nationality. Having an all-in-one school device will save thousands of sheets of paper, drastically reduce backpack weight, and will provide students with the most current learning materials. Although use is intended for middle school and high school students, this product could also be very beneficial for younger children or students with learning disabilities. School boards would own and supply the device to students for the school year. Just like a textbook, students would be responsible for not losing or damaging the device. Most schoolwork already requires the use of electronics for research and completion of assignments, but not all students have (or can afford) laptops and tablets. Scribe will give every student an equal chance at success.
