The2016BerkeleySTARTALKTeacherProgramisafederally-fundedprogramthat
offersprofessionaldevelopmentforMandarinteachers.Uponsuccessfully
completingthis4-week(2-weekonlineand2-weekonsite)20-day160-hoursummer
enrichment program,youwillreceivethreeunitsfor“MethodsofTeaching
Chinese”coursefromUCBerkeleyExtensionandacertificateofcompletion.
TheBerkeleySTARTALKTeacherprogramhasentereditsninthyearsince2008.In
2009,federalSTARTALKsitevisitorsidentifieditasaprogramthatexemplifies
thebestpracticesoftheSTARTALKTeacherProgram.The2014sitevisitreport
noted:"Theonlinecomponentworksseamlesslywiththeonsiteprogram.Itcan
serveasamodelSTARTALKonlineprogram".The2015sitevisitreportnoted:
"Excellentsequencingofmicroteaching,leadingparticipantsfromlearningthe
relevantconcepts,observingmasterteachers'videos,discussing,planningand
teachinginactualclassrooms;frequentsmodelingbymasters".
Inadditiontoprofessionaldevelopmentinteaching,theprogramhasoffered
leadershipdevelopmentopportunitiesforprogramgraduates.Allofourmentor
teachershavebeeninvitedtoserveasmembersofourinstructionalteamafter
completingourprogramwithexceptionalperformance.Manyofthemwere
inspiredbythisprogramanddecidedtopursuetheirteachingcredentialsafter
completingtheBerkeleySTARTALKProgram.
This is a no cost, non-residential program for the teacher participants. While no
travel support is available, free meals (breakfast, lunch and two snacks) will be
providedduringthe2-weekonsiteprogram.
Teachers who meet the following criteria will be considered for participation in
theprogram:

Holding teacher credentials in other subjects but planning to teach Chinese in
thecomingschoolyear(2016-2017)
HavingcompletedateachertrainingprogramforteachingChineseorteaching
EnglishandneedingfurtherprofessionaldevelopmentinteachingChinese
HoldinganacademicdegreeinChineselanguageandliteratureandplantoteach

Requirements,Formatandtechnologyforallparticipants
This10-dayasynchronousworkshopfeaturesinstructionalvideos,note-taking,
discussionforums,checking-understanding-quizzes,andassignmentstobe
completedindividuallyandingroup.Youmustalsocompletetheonsite
programstartingJune20,2016immediatelyafterthecompletionofthe
onlineprogram.Amentorteacherwillassistyouingroupsduringtheentire
4-weekonline&onsiteprogram.AllmentorteachersholdCalifornia
Teachingcredential. SomeofthementorteachersarealsoIB(International
Baccalaureate)instructorsand/or examiners,orarecurrentlyteachingAP
Chinese.
Therewillbesynchronousmeetingsandpartneractivitiesrequiredatarrangedtimes.You
shouldexpecttospendapproximately40hoursperweekonthisonlinecourseincludingvideo
viewing,exercises,discussionandlessonplanningingroups.Thisonlineprogramoffers:
1)Lectures,readings,exercises,anddiscussionsonNationalandState
Standards,STARTALKendorsedprinciplesforeffectiveteachingand
learning, Chinese linguistics/pedagogical grammar, backwarddesignedunit&lesson planning, using target language to
teach, and integrating language, contentandlanguageina
Chineselanguageclassroom,
2)Demolessoncritiquesusingshortlessonstapedinmentorteachers
classrooms,BerkeleySTARTALKProgrammicroteachingvideos,and/or
STARTALKClassroomVideoCollections,
3)Theopportunitytodeveloponeofthetworequiredlessonplansingroup,
4)Atechnologyworkshopintroducingtechnologyapplicationsfor2016
STARTALKProgramandadditionaltoolsforChineselanguageclassrooms.
Youwillneedhigh-speedInternetconnectioninordertowatchthevideos
online.Youalsoneedaheadsetwithmicrophoneandawebcamforyour
computerinordertoparticipatefullyinthecourse. YouwillalsoneedaGoogle
emailaccountforthiscourse.Thiscoursewillintroducemostofeffective
teaching/learningGoogletools. Alloftheapplicationsweuseonlinewillbefree
foryoutotryouttheactivities.Duringthetwoweeks,wewillhaveatechnology
teamswhowillhelpyougothroughtheonlinelearningprocess.

During the first week of the onsite program (June 20-24), you will meet your
onlinegroupmembersfacetofaceto:
1.Refineyourfirstlessonplan,
2.Developyoursecondlessonplan,
3. Meet the online Chinese linguistics instructor in person and ask questions
facetofaceand/oronlineatascheduledtime,
4.Practiceteachinginyourgroupusingoneofthelessonsyoudevelopedin
groupsandmakenecessarymodificationsbeforemicroteachingduringthe
secondweekoftheonsiteprogram.
Thesamementorteacherassignedtoyouronlinegroupwillcontinuetoassistyouduring
theonsiteprogram.AllmentorteachersholdaCaliforniaTeachingcredential.Someof
the mentor teachers are also IB (International Baccalaureate)instructorsand/or
examiners,orarecurrentlyteachingAPChinese.
Duringthesecondweekoftheonsiteprogram(June27-July1),thevolunteer
frommiddleandhighschoolstudentswilljointheprogramtoprovideyouwitha
realclassroomsettingformicroteaching.Youwillalsohavetheopportunityto
observeyourmentorteacher’steachingdemosinthisface-to-facesetting.
