news
It is hard to believe that Christmas is already
almost upon us. We can reflect back at an
extremely busy, productive and diverse year.
Following a directive from the European Union to remove a number
of hazardous substances from any goods sold into Europe, Schneider
Electric has adopted and enforced this initiative globally.
The Schneider Electric Christchurch R&D Design Manager, Dave
Scottorn is heading a project to implement this change across PDL
The building boom has continued to
flourish this year led by the Residential and
Commercial sectors although there are some
indications that this is set to slow down a little
next year. Whilst we have also seen some
strong growth in the industrial sector the
strong dollar has made it a challenging year
particularly those involved in export.
Featured on the front cover of this edition is

branded products. The directive has the goal of limiting the use of
certain substances considered as dangerous to the environment and,
above all, to public health. Some of the main substances on the list
include: lead, mercury, cadmium, chrome, and flame retardant.
The time frames associated with this directive are for manufacturing
solutions to be in place by July 2005, and then all products at the
point of sale to contain the solutions by July 2006.
The size of the project for Schneider Electric New Zealand involves
just over 300 suppliers, looking at approximately 6,000 components
going into the finished items produced or contract manufactured for
sale locally or to other parts of the world.

Merlin Gerin launches Prisma Plus

Cover Story
September – October 2004
When a company spends $186 million
developing a new switchboard system,
you know it is making a serious
investment in coming up with a worldbeating product.
According to manufacturer Schneider
Electric, that’s just what has been
achieved with the launch of the
new Merlin Gerin Prisma Plus – a
switchboard system designed to provide
a superior solution while slashing
installation costs.
“Prisma Plus is not just a face-lift of the
existing switchboard – it’s a complete
rethink which has gone beyond the
hardware,” says Schneider Electric low
voltage distribution marketing manager
Paul Stephens. “Our design team looked
at every aspect of work you do – from
board specification and design through
to transport and installation on site, as
well as operation, maintenance and fi
nally upgrading.
“We wanted to make everything you do
quicker, easier and better, so we spent a
lot of time listening to people throughout
the industry. As a result we were able to
identify a raft of improvements to include
in the 100 million Euro Prisma Plus
development programme.
“We have also drawn on all the lessons
learned since the original Prisma was
launched 15 years ago, and we have
provided for all the new technology
which has appeared over that time.”
The result is a switchboard which will
deliver peace of mind to contractors,
panel builders, installers and end users
alike, he says.
“Everything has been thought out for you,
it’s fully type tested, and it comes with the
backing of a multinational manufacturer.
The comprehensive range of fi tting and
installation accessories makes it very
quick to assemble, so it will cut labour
installation costs to ribbons.”
The aesthetic design
and colouring options
allow flexible location
outside a switchroom
and compatibility with
the architect’s interior design.
Fully type-tested
The entire Prisma Plus package has
been certified to switchboard standard
IEC 60439-1, says Stephens.
“All of the components have been
tested together so we can guarantee
performance at different temperatures
and different IP ratings. We are one
of only a very few manufacturers who
can do this because the switchgear is
manufactured for us by our Merlin Gerin
and Telemecanique operations. That’s
got to be a lot better than knocking up a
box with different components thrown in.”
The Prisma Plus also allows easier
segregation of live components, says
Stephens. “The off-the-shelf unit is
designed for easy partitioning – you gain
extra protection during installation, and
it’s easy and safe to maintain.”
Stephens says the Prisma Plus
switchboard has also been brought up to
date by making it easier to incorporate
gear which simply wasn’t around 15
years ago.
“As you would expect, the Prisma Plus
will now accommodate all the newer
devices like Merlin Gerin Masterpact
NT and NW air circuit breakers,
Telemecanique Te-Sys D contactors and
TeSys U motor circuit breakers, variable
speed drives, soft starters and PLCs.”
You can also choose between a large
range of panels rated to IP 30 or IP 55
with a choice of front panel, front plates,
plain or transparent door.
Modular design
Stephens says the modular design of
the Prisma Plus components allows
panel builders to design a switchboard
to meet the needs of large or small
installations.
“We have two models of Prisma Plus:
the System G is suitable for DBs up
to 630A and is predominately a wallmounted solution, whereas the System
P is for main switchboards and based on
a free-standing cubicle principle.
“The add-ons let you go as big as you
want, all the way up to 3200 amps, which
is enough load to power a small town.”
continued on page 6.

Schneider Electric has developed a set
of software tools to assist in the design
and implementation process.
“The program allows you to tick
boxes for your requirements including
temperature rating and IP rating and the
package produces a full specification in
word document format,” says Stephens.
“We also have illustrated catalogues and
busbar drawings which show pre-studied
and tested solutions. It all helps to make
life easier for consultants and minimises
your risk.”
Stephens says Schneider Electric
has also put a lot of thought into after
sales care.
“We realise that a project does not
stop when the switchboard has
been installed, so we have provided
guides with useful information on
commissioning, operation, maintenance,
and even upgrading.”
Blending in
Stephens says the appearance of the
Prisma Plus has also been improved
offering real benefits to building owners
and tenants. The beige base colour of
the original Prisma has been changed
to a more neutral cream-white, and
exterior fittings like cabinet door handles
have been re-designed with a more
contemporary but less obtrusive look.
Stephens says looks are important if
you are installing switchboards close
to working areas, in offices or corridors
rather than in switch rooms.
“This colour scheme blends in, so you
don’t have to hide the Prisma Plus
away in a switch room. This gives you a
lot more options where you locate the
boards so you could save a lot of money
in cabling costs, while keeping the
architects happy.”
Another less obvious exterior change
is that several parts which were made
of plastic on the previous Prisma have
been replaced with metal fittings so they
can be easily powder coated.
“Now with full metal parts on the outside
you can easily apply any colour you
like to colour-code for different service
groups for example,” says Stephens.
Warm reception
Schneider Electric is now bringing its
panel builder partners up to speed on
the new features and design advantages
of Prisma Plus through a two day
training and certification programme.
Stephens says the flexibility of the
Prisma Plus has been welcomed by
those attending.
Bob Verall, managing director of
Christchurch-based TLJ Switchboards
says the Prisma Plus is more robust
and flexible than the original Prisma,
and it can accommodate motor
control components.
“The old Prisma could really only be
used as distribution boards but the
Prisma Plus can now be used as a
motor control board as well. There are
better IP ratings to more effectively keep
out water and dust, and aesthetically it
looks a lot better as well. The Prisma
Plus is quicker to assemble, and there
are nice touches like being able to lift
the cubicle out with eye-bolts.”
The modular design suits large and
small installations.
Verall says TLJ has already received
orders for two jobs which will include the
Prisma Plus.
“Overall it’s a big improvement on the
original design, but after 15 years it
ought to be,” he adds.
Alan Wilson, managing director
of Invercargill-based Clive Wilson
Switchboards, says his fi rm has been
using the original Prisma switchboard for
four or five years and the Prisma Plus is
“a vast improvement.”
“With the previous Prisma the
distribution systems were a bit limited
but you now have a bigger range of
higher current busbar options, the fact
that you can pull the sides off it and
bolt it to the wall is a big bonus.” Wilson
agrees the Prisma Plus looks better too.
“It dates the opposition,” he says.
