RESISTORS “SHARING” VOLTAGE PERCENTAGE INVESTIGATION • Set up a series circuit with three 1000‐Ω resistors only. • Measure and record the voltage drop across each resistor. • Record and analyze your results. PERCENTAGE INVESTIGATION • What is the total resistance in the three‐ resistor circuit? • 3000‐Ω • This means 3000 Ω equals 100% of the resistance in the circuit. • What percentage of the resistance is contributed by resistor 1? • 1000 Ω ÷ 3000 Ω × 100 = 33.3% PERCENTAGE INVESTIGATION • What is the total voltage available in the circuit? • The voltage across the baVery terminals – probably in the neighborhood of 8 V at this point in the course. • Okay, 8 V is 100% of the voltage available in the circuit. • How much voltage is dropped by resistor 1? • About 2.7 V • What is the percentage of the voltage drop caused by resistor 1? • 2.7 V ÷ 8 V × 100 = 34% THREE GREAT TRUTHS 1. The sum of the component voltage drops in a series circuit is equal to the voltage of the source. 2. The greater the resistance of a resistor, the more voltage it drops. 3. In a series circuit, the percentage of resistance contributed by a component is equal to the percentage of voltage dropped by that component.
