Students are required to complete 60 hours (2 credits) of community service learning as part of their graduation requirements. INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES Integrated Senior Studies: The Greater Boston Project ACC** ** This eight-credit, accelerated-level course is expressly interdisciplinary, as skills from the disciplines of English, history, and mathematics are brought together to explore Greater Boston’s past and present. It emphasizes self-direction, collaboration, mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, textual analysis, written communication, oral communication, and research. The course culminates with the Community Action Project (CAP), a collaborative exploration into and analysis of at least one area of study from the course. The CAP allows students to become agents of change as they work to develop, propose, present, and possibly implement their resolutions to existing real-world problems. This course satisfies the graduation requirement for English 12. COURSES BEING TAUGHT 2014-2015 The following schema gives the level (AP, ACC, H, S) of each class being taught this academic year. The absence of an alphabetic designation below indicates an unleveled class that does not factor into GPA. Please note that AP offerings are typically restricted to junior and senior year, with most only available senior year. Students who choose to pursue the GCP Certificate fulfill requirements in the following areas: foreign travel, second language acquisition, community service in another cultural context (here or abroad), and a global focus project on some aspect of a foreign country's culture, history, politics, geography, economy, etc. beyond regularly assigned class work. A complete description of the GCP can be found at: http://nhs.needham.k12.ma.us/core/Travel/GCP GRADE POINT AVERAGE/COURSE LEVELS GPA is tabulated using a 5 point weighting system. Only leveled courses in grades 9, 10, 11 are included in the GPA computation. Level 1 Accelerated (ACC) and Advanced Placement (AP) classes receive equal weight. Accelerated classes are the normal route to AP classes. In addition to the alphabetic designation (ACC or AP) on the transcript the final digit in the course number is always a 1. A weight of 5.0 is assigned to an A in these classes. Level 2 Honors (H) classes are designated by the letter H or HON on the transcript. In addition, the final digit in their course number is always a 2. A weight of 4.5 is assigned to an A in these classes. Level 3 Standard (S) classes form the foundation college preparatory program. The final digit in the course number is always a 3. A weight of 4.0 is assigned to an A in these classes. Unleveled Unleveled classes have no alphabetic designation on the transcript and their grades are unweighted. The final digit in the course number is always a zero (0). Unleveled classes can still be college preparatory, but do not factor into GPA.
