MEET THE COACHES

HEAD TRACK & FIELD COACH: STEVE GARDINER ‘74

A 1974 UMass Dartmouth graduate when the university was known as Southeastern Massachusetts University, Steve

Gardiner returned to the UMD campus in 2008 after serving as the head Boy’s Cross Country and Track & Field coach for the last 30 years at New Bedford High School. During that time, where he also served at times as the head girl’s coach, Gardiner reaped numerous professional awards, including membership in the Massachusetts Track Coaches Hall of Fame (2000) and the UMass Dartmouth Hall of Fame (2003), and the New Bedford H.S. HOF

(2009) He was selected Massachusetts Coach of the Year by the Boston Globe (1980, 89, 93) as well as the Runner’s World Coaching All-Star Team in 1984. Under Gardiner, the Whaler’s captured five

State outdoor championships, one Eastern Mass cross country title, as well as nine New England individual championships and three individual national high school All-Americans.

Gardiner’s return to his alma-mater in the fall of 2008 has supplied renewed energy and commitment to the Corsair Track & Field teams. An accomplished hurdles and jumps coach, Steve became a Level II Certified track & field coach in 1990 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado springs. Gardiner’s extensive knowledge of the Massachusetts high school ranks bodes well for the future of UMass Dartmouth men’s and women’s track& field. In just his first two years, Steve’s impact has been felt, and the future looks very bright for both squads.

HEAD CROSS COUNTRY COACH: JON HIRD

Jon Hird enters his 23 nd

year at UMass Dartmouth after nine successful years as the Head Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field Coach at Brown University, where he initiated both programs. Hird came to UMass Dartmouth in 1988 and took

over the reins of the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track teams from long time

head coach Bob Dowd. While at Brown, his teams produced 32 Ivy League champions and 14 Ivy

League records. His 1978 team won an Ivy League title and his 1979 squad won the New England’s.

In 1984 Hird had two nationally ranked relay teams, and six of his athletes and one of his relays

relay teams qualified for the Division I NCAA Nationals.

Since coming to then Southeastern Massachusetts University, it has been more of the same,

with seventeen Division III All-Americans, ranging from the javelin, to the hurdles, to the 5000m. In

2006 Hird accepted increased administrative responsibilities with in the Athletic Department, and is

currently the Coordinator of Academic Support Services for the Athletics Department.

Hird’s current focus is as the head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country teams, as well as

middle distance and distance runners on the track. His cross country teams over the years have captured nine men’s conference titles and six women’s crowns. Hird was selected Little East Conference Coach of the year in

2008 for his efforts in Men’s Cross Country. In the fall of 2009, Hird will start a three year stint as President of the New

England Men’s Division III Cross Country and Track Coaches Association, as well as starting a four year term as a member of the National NCAA Track and Field Committee.

A 1973 graduate of Middlebury college, the 4:18 miler received a Master’s Degree in Education from Brown in 1974

ASSISTANT CROSS COUNTRY COACH: DEON BARRETT ‘95

It is a special thing when a college athlete can make a significant mark in his sport as an athlete, and then come back and make an even bigger mark at his alma mater as a coach. Such has been the contribution of Deon Barrett, an All-American cross country runner at UMass Dartmouth in 1995,who returned a decade later to lend his significant talents to his sport and his school. Barrett enters his fifth season as assistant coach in cross country.

In addition to his All–American status, Barrett is also a member of the UMass Dartmouth Corsair

Hall of Fame (2004) as well as being ranked seventh on the all time list of cross country performers in the storied history of that sport at UMass Dartmouth. With personal bests of 14:50 for 5K, 24:50 for 5 miles, and 30:37 for 10K, he brings a great blend of coaching ability, personal running experience, and dedication to the runners at UMass Dartmouth. The men’s cross country team had it’s best season in a number of years in 2009, and Barrett was a major pert of their success. “Deon is my right and left hand,” says Head Coach Jon Hird.

ASSISTANT TRACK AND FIELD COACH: THROWS; DARREN D’ANDRADE

Captain of several New Bedford H.S. state championship teams, Darren is a longtime coach with both head and assistant coaching stints in his extensive resume. As head coach at Old

Rochester HS, his teams produced the first state championship in school history, and he has guided numerous state champs in the shot and discus. Darren brings a relaxed but careful coaching style to the UMD throwers.

UMASS DARTMOUTH CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

If the 2009 UMass

Dartmouth Cross

Country campaign was a good one, then the 2010 version has a good chance to be even better. While two runners have moved on from last year’s UMD NCAA

Regional top 14 team finisher, others are ready to take their place.

Nick Santoro

(pictured above) (Sr. Shrewsbury, MA) had a banner season last fall, leading the Corsairs in all their races. Owner of a LEC Conference runner–up

32:14.31 in the 10,000m last spring, Santoro logged

80 mile training weeks during the summer in preparation for an even better 2010 season.

Conference champ in the outdoor 5000m, Kevin

Gilmore (Jr. Hanson, MA) will be looking for the breakthrough season of which he is eminently capable. Without the hip injury which slowed him last summer, Gilmore tackled a training volume similar to Santoro, and the increased strength, combined with Kevin’s 15:20. 5K speed, may propel him near the top of the New England ranks.

Corsair fans are looking to the return of Derek

Stevens (Swampscott, MA) a fifth year senior who took last fall off due to injury. A top three runner in

2008, he should blend right in with Santoro and

Gilmore. His 15:40 5K PR will put him right in the mix

In addition to the top three, , Head Coach Jon

Hird welcomes trackster Eric Nygaard (Sr.

Medway, MA) with his 4:21.4 mile speed and

Captain Steve Burke (Sr. Norwell, MA Burke had the breakthrough of the year last year. His first two years at UMass Dartmouth have been characterized by flashes of talent hampered by injury, but last fall Burke began torching cross country courses in the second half of the season, and continued that pace throughout the rest of the year, registering a 4:24.80 mile and an 8:52.74 3K.

If Nygaard and Burke can make the “big three” a “big five,” might a top two conference ranking and a top 10 NCAA Regional finish be possible? Join the Corsairs at Williamstown on

November 13 and find out.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

With five of last year’s top seven returning, and with the addition of both returning veterans and talented new faces, seasoned cross country fans on the

UMass Dartmouth campus are looking at

2010 with a great deal of anticipation.

“Every year is a new year,” notes Head Coach

Jon Hird, “And we still need to run the races, but there is a great deal of talent on this team, and I think we will have a great deal fun and success if we keep our focus clear and our goals high.”

Similar to the men’s squad, the women’s 2010 edition should be blessed with two # 1 runners leading the pack. Last year’s Little East Conference

Rookie of the Year Caitlin McGarigal (Jr.

Shutesbury, MA) (above) should team up with the

Corsairs’ number one runner in 2008, Courtney

Testa (Jr. Hopkinton, MA). Both runners had top ten conference finishes in their inaugural season, with McGarigal finishing 5 th

last year. Testa was the victim of a stress fracture in her leg early in the 2009 campaign, and just resumed training last spring, but has the ability to round out into a significant presence.

The next five positions may fluctuate throughout the season, an indication of the talent and depth of the team. Megan Oliveira (Jr. Somerset,

MA) filled the runner-up spot all last season, but she should get plenty of welcome company from team captain Stacey Dybel (Jr. Littleton, MA),

Rachel LeBlanc (So., E. Bridgewater, MA), and a vastly improving Meghan Bohigian (Jr. Barre,

MA). Not to be outdone, several freshmen will look to make their mark in the top seven. Chief among them are middle distance track and field speedster Dekontee Chea (Chelmsford, MA) , and

Kelci Sullivan, (Hanson, MA) another talented member of the Whitman-Hanson HS stable of harriers.

The Corsairs will have a lot of work ahead of them if they are to realize their goals, but if they are successful, then a top two finish in the conference, and a top 20 rank in the NCAA

Regionals are definite possibilities.

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Under second year Head Coach Steve Gardiner,

’74, HOF ’03, the Men’s Indoor Track and Field team achieved their highest finish in the history of the

Little East/ New England conference indoor meet, and although the squad slipped a little in the outdoor meet, there is a strong and potent mix of new faces and returning vets which suggests an outstanding season in

2010-11.

Throughout the

2009-10 campaigns, the sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers served as a dependable area of strength for the Corsairs. Junior Nick Deininger ’11 (No.

Attleboro, MA) led the hurdlers under cover, and barrier specialist Brian McArdle ’12 (Winchester, MA)

(above) led the hurdlers outdoors. Along with co-captain

Jeff Beale ’11 (Townsend, MA) , McArdle and Deininger succeeded in monopolizing hurdle points in many of the

Corsairs’ meets. Hymlaire Lamisere ’12 (Newton,

MA) clocked a fine 6.60 in the 55m dash.

Horizontal jumpers Kevin Markie ’11 (No.

Attleboro, MA) and Kaylin Miranda ’13 (Brighton,

MA) put on a show in the triple and long jumps, with

Markie establishing himself as one of the top triple jumpers in New England Division III. For 2010-11

Markie will welcome the talents of freshman triple jumper Chris Perry, who has hit the pit in 48’ in the triple jump.

Many opposing coaches envy the large form of

Rob Yarbough ‘ (Fall River, MA) tossing the shot and the 35 lb. weight. Tops in the N.E. Alliance Conference in the shot put and among the list leaders in the weight,

Yarbough is looking forward to having company in the form of incoming freshman throws standouts Christopher

Cole (Dartmouth, MA), Conway King (Boston, MA) and A.I.C. transfer Justin Chartier (Agawam, MA)

A strong showing this coming year from the middle distance and distance group will be required if

UMD is to remain high in conference and New England ranks. Leading the way will be senior standout Eric

Nygaard, ’11, (Medway, MA), who paced the Corsairs in every distance from the 600m to the mile, both indoors and outdoors. His 4:03.81 1500m converts to a 4:21.53 mile, and his 2:32.32 1000m indoors was a fraction of a second away from the school record.

Nygaard looks to have strong company , as two of last years freshmen showed real promise in the 800m.

Scott Connolly (Sharon, MA) and Matt Ford,

(Pembroke, MA) .

UMASS DARTMOUTH TRACK AND FIELD OUTLOOK

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Head Coach Steve Gardiner has high hopes for the women’s squad in 2010-11, due in part to an influx of talent in the sprints, combined with top level talent in the throws and distance events, along with a conference gold medalist in the straight hurdles and long sprints, and you have a recipe for a very successful season.

The 2009-10 indoor and outdoor women’s campaign’s saw an uptick in the sprints, as evinced by a school record in the 4 X 100m relay outdoors. The quartet of Linee Mello-

Frost “11 (New Bedford, MA), Jill VanNess ’13

(Agawam, MA) , Shannon Singletary ’13 (Brockton,

MA), and Briley Morrill ’11 (Whitman, MA) carried the baton to a 49.75 baton carry. Add to this group speedy freshmen Ezra Banks (Roxbury, MA.) and

Jasmine Bien-Amie (Cambridge, MA.) and you have the makings of an exciting point scoring section of the team.

Not that other areas of the squad don’t have punch as well. Two conference gold medal winners and school record holders return to lead the Corsairs against conference And New England foes. Kim Urena ’13 (So.

Marleboro, MA) (pictured above) ran away from opponents in the Conference 600m while posting a school record performance, and co-captain Linee Mello-

Frost took strong command of both straight hurdle races, both indoors and out, registering clockings of 8.57 (55m hurdles) and 15.19 for the 100m barriers. First year runner Dekontee Chea (Chelmsford, MA) will also make her presence felt in the long sprints.

The strength of the women’s squad for 2010-11 will not be limited to these areas either. The throwing events will showcase the talents of indoor and outdoor conference shot put record holder Jermai Harrison ’11

(Jr. Brockton, MA) as well as All-Conference selection

Brittany Cole (Jr. Dartmouth, MA). Emily Migre ’12

(Whitman, MA) looks to burst out into the 120’ range in the javelin, and newcomer Jessica Masse (Somerville,

MA) should help the throws squad develop into one of the most potent forces in the N.E Alliance Conference and the

Division III ranks.

In the distance area, the UMass Dartmouth

Corsairs sport two more conference champions, with

Megan Oliveira ’12 (Somersett, MA) returning in the

1000m, and Caitlin McGarigal ’12 (Shutesbury, MA) looking to reprise her success in the 3000 and 5000m runs.

All in all, a recipe for success in 2010-11 .

What Our Graduates Say………

State Senator Mark Montigny ’83 State Senator, Bristol District, Former chairman State Ways and

Means Committee, (School record holder, 400m hurdles, two time NE division III champion, two time NCAA qualifier.) “

I’ve always had a real drive to compete, whether it was in track or in politics. I constantly look back to the lessons I learned…in collegiate athletics. What I remember most about my days on campus were the wealth of opportunities available to me.”

Ron Grigg ’92 Director of Cross Country/ Track and Field, Jacksonville University, Six time Sun

Conference Coach of the Year, 2008 USTFCCCA Division 1 South Region Coach of the

Year. “ All of my greatest college memories involve Coach Hird and my teammates. I do my best to try and emulate with my athletes the same genuine care that Coach Hird displayed with his athletes.”

Robert “Bubba” Petersen ’95 National Bids Coordinator for M-F Athletics, the world’s largest supplier of cross country and track and field equipment. “

My years spent at UMass

Dartmouth provided me with the structure which has helped me succeed in life both as a parent and in the business world. Learning how to balance athletics and academics while striving for success in both was challenging. Thanks to the coaching staff and the faculty, I was given the support I needed to allow me to push and attain my goals. As a team leader, I cherished the opportunities to lead by example, as well as motivate others and appreciate their success as individuals and as part of a team.

Carolyn (Conroy) Nye ’05 Marketing Manager, S&S Worldwide, Maker of arts and crafts, P.E. and sporting equipment (Team Captain, Cross Country and Track and Field, All-Conference in both Cross Country and Track and Field, school record holder, 3000m steeplechase)

“The four years I spent at UMass Dartmouth were more than I could have hoped for. I had fully expected to attend another university specifically for business, but a week before the start of school, I changed my mind and enrolled at UMass, and it was one of the best decisions

I ever made.

Running four years of Cross Country and Track and field challenged me in ways I never thought possible. The lasting friendships and support I received from my team-mates and coaches helped me learn how to succeed and be productive in my life, and my experience at

UMass Dartmouth has made me a better, more well rounded person truly capable of handling anything in my future. I know today that I chose the right university and I cherish my education, my running career, and my friendships.

Leanne Nygaard ’08 Cardiac Nurse, Miriam Hospital, Providence. R.I (Team Captain, Cross

Country, Track and Field, school record holder, 600 meters, Valedictorian of her senior class.)

As a high school junior, not a shadow of a doubt passed through my mind when I applied for early decision….in fact, UMass Dartmouth was the only school to which I applied. I felt that the curriculum and professors would match my work ethic and personality, and I knew I would thrive in that environment. Athletically….. UMass Dartmouth made me a better athlete, student, and person, and I am truly grateful for those experiences.
