SECTION 1.0: Technology Overview:
Silicon Based Protection:
Zener Diodes:
A Zener diode is a type of diode that permits current to flow in the forward direction like a normal diode, but
also in the reverse direction if the voltage is larger than the breakdown voltage known as "Zener knee voltage" or "Zener voltage".
Named for Clarence Zener, who discovered this electrical property. Zener diodes are widely used to regulate the voltage across a
circuit. When connected in parallel with a variable voltage source so that it is reverse biased, a zener diode conducts when the voltage
reaches the diode's reverse breakdown voltage. From that point it keeps the voltage at that value. Zener diodes represent that largest
unit market for circuit protection components in the world. These devices are a low-cost solution for guarding against the effects
of electrostatic discharge in electronic systems and help original equipment designers comply with IEC 61000 4-2
specifications in many subassemblies worldwide.
Zener diodes compete effectively against chip varistors, which are used for the same applications. Zener diodes have an average
unit price of approximately $0.014 per piece, which makes them among the lowest priced silicon based products on the market today.

Silicon diodes intended for use in the reverse-breakdown region are familiar components to analog electronic circuit designers. While
these components are commonly called "zener diodes," only devices with a reverse breakdown voltage of less than about 5 volts (V)
usually use the zener mechanism. Diodes with a reverse breakdown voltage of more than 8 V use the avalanche mechanism. For
diodes with a reverse breakdown value between about 5 and 8 V, both mechanisms operate. One can quickly identify the mechanism
of a particular diode in the laboratory with the following rule. In zener breakdown, the magnitude of the conduction voltage decreases
as the temperature increases; for avalanche breakdown, the magnitude of the conduction voltage increases as temperature increases.
Both avalanche and zener diodes are widely used as voltage regulators.
Silicon Avalanche Diodes
An avalanche diode is a diode (usually made from silicon, but can be made from another semiconductor) that is designed to break
down and conduct at a specified reverse bias voltage. A common application is protecting electronic circuits against damaging
high voltages. The avalanche diode is connected to the circuit so that it is reverse-biased. In other words, its cathode is positive with
respect to its anode. In this configuration, the diode is non-conducting and does not interfere with the circuit. If the voltage increases
beyond the design limit, the diode suffers avalanche breakdown, causing the harmful voltage to be conducted to earth. When used
in this fashion they are often referred to as clamper diodes because they "clamp" the voltage to a predetermined maximum level.
Avalanche diodes are normally specified for this role by their clamping voltage VBR and the maximum size of transient they can
absorb, specified by energy (in joules)). Avalanche breakdown is not destructive, as long as the diode is not allowed to overheat.
Avalanche diodes have too large a breakdown voltage to be suitable for protection of all low voltage integrated circuits. Zener diodes

have the appropriate range of breakdown voltages, but are not highly nonlinear. To clamp over-voltages of either polarity, two zener
or avalanche diodes are connected back-to-back in series. Both zener and avalanche diodes respond particularly quickly in comparison
to varistors and gas tubes. Silicon diodes do not exhibit degradation of electrical parameters after prolonged service. This fact is often
stated as a reason to use silicon diodes rather than varistors. However, one should also consider the fact that the maximum tolerable
surge current for a zener or avalanche diode in reverse breakdown is rather small when compared to tolerable surge currents for
varistors and gas tubes.
Special avalanche diodes with breakdown voltages less than 6 V are available, and are widely used as
voltage reference circuits in battery operated equipment. These low voltage avalanche devices have relatively small power ratings.
However, these devices may be attractive for protecting high-speed CMOS and other low-voltage integrated circuits.
Thyristors:
The thyristor is a solid-state semiconductor device with four layers of alternating N and P-type material. They act as a switch,
conducting when their gate receives a current pulse, and continue to conduct for as long as they are forward biased (that is, as long as
the voltage across the device has not reversed). Thyristors can also be found in power supplies for digital circuits, where they can be
used as a sort of "circuit breaker" or "crowbar" to prevent a failure in the power supply from damaging downstream components. The
thyristor is used in conjunction with a zener diode attached to its gate, and when the output voltage of the supply rises above the zener
voltage, the thyristor conducts, shorting the power supply output to ground (and in general blowing an upstream fuse).
Thyristors are considered to be at the forefront of circuit protection technology. The development process for these devices is
sophisticated and protected by numerous patents controlled by the top suppliers. Accordingly since 2000 there has been significant
merger and acquisitions among major circuit protection component manufacturers to gain control of this technology. Since 2000 for
