Hopefully by now, you have had at least one opportunity to notice that Bentwood Elementary is fully under construction! I wanted to take this space to thank you for your support of the Bond Referendum last summer that funded this initiative covering some enhanced “safety and security” measures for our school campus. Although it seems as though we just started this construction project, in reality, we are quickly nearing the completion of Phase One. You may recall from the flier I shared last October at Parent Teacher Conference time, we have two phases for our remodeling. Phase One involves a security “pinch point” and redirection of all visitors entering our school through the new office moved to the very front of the building on the east/Bond side. A new set of double doors will be in place at the front entry which allows us to affirm that anyone gaining access into our student areas will have undergone an enhanced screening with proper identification. The office make-over, is quickly approaching completion. The painters have begun to work on the new walls, and the ceiling grid and lighting has begun to arrive. With all things coming together as planned, we hope to occupy the new space either immediately before or after our February Parent Teacher Conferences! Whew – time flies! Phase Two of our project involves the remodel of our current office, nurse’s area, lounge and teacher workroom. These areas will replace the spaces that the new office relocation took over. They include placing the Spanish classroom, the Occupational Therapy Sensory Room, and Conference Room into the space you’ve known as the office suite for the past sixteen years. I am forever grateful to you, our school patrons, and Olathe’s school district leadership, for the foresight and wisdom to capture opportunities to enhance Bentwood’s school security measures. One only has to watch the television news to know that these issues are real across our country and could become concerns in any neighborhood. With your help, ours remains safe and secure! If you will save the date, we will invite you to see our brand new spaces on our annual Fine Arts Fair / Burger Night – April 24th! Educationally yours, Cathy McDonald Gear Up for the Annual Discount Card Program It is once again time for the annual Major Saver campaign. Our students will have the opportunity to sell Major Saver cards from January 24 through February 6. Major Saver discount cards feature "buy one get one free" deals at 17 great Olathe restaurants and businesses. A new feature to the Major Saver program…you may purchase Olathe or other versions of the Major Saver card online at www.majorsaver.com. All cards purchased online will be mailed to the customer and may still be credited toward our school. Major Saver sales support the Olathe Public Schools Foundation (OPSF) which last year alone awarded $500 grants to 36 Educator Excellence Award-winning teachers; provided $80,000 in classroom and school-wide grants for innovative projects; and supplied $50,000 in summer school scholarships for families in need. The Foundation also awarded over $90,000 in college scholarships to high school seniors as well providing over 14,500 books to Olathe elementary students as part of the F.R.E.D. (Families Read Every Day) program. Your child benefits from OPSF! Thanks for your continued support! The prize patrol will make their first award on Wed., Jan. 30th!
