OWLv2 ‐ User Guide for Students
GETTING STARTED
Welcome to OWLv2, an improved version of the OWLv1 chemistry
learning system. OWL stands for Online Web‐based Learning, which is
an integrated, online course system for teaching and learning chemistry
disciplines. OWLv2 provides you with the tools necessary for studying
class materials, taking assignments, analyzing your progress, and
tracking your grades from wherever you have Internet access.
While working at your own pace, or within a schedule set‐up by your
instructor, you can work on step‐by‐step tutorials, interactive
simulations, homework questions, read an interactive eBook, take
exams, and track your overall course progress. OWLv2 gives you an easy‐
to‐use, personalized online environment that you can manage to best
suit your needs.
As a live, web‐based program, OWLv2 is updated regularly with new
features and improvements. Please refer to OWLv2’s online Help for the
most current information.
Note: It is important to always use the buttons and links provided in
OWLv2 to close assignments or go to another page. If you use your
browser's Close button or Back/Forward buttons instead, you may
unintentionally lose work from your current session.
Audience
This document addresses the needs of OWLv2 students when
registering for a course, taking and reviewing their assignments,
accessing study materials, and tracking progress in their course.

Getting Started
Registering for Your OWLv2 Course
When you are required to register for a new course, there are two codes
you use to access your online materials.
€ The first code you need is the Course Key, which is provided by
your instructor, either as part of a registration URL or as a
alphanumeric code. The Course Key is a 12 or 15‐digit string of
numbers and letters that identifies your course.
€ The second code you need is an Access Code. This code is
proof of purchase for your course materials. Your least
expensive option for purchasing an Access Code is through the
CengageBrain website, however, it can also come bundled with
your textbook or it can be purchased at your bookstore. When
submitted, this code provides you with continuous access to
your online course materials.
Note: Most courses offer the option of a free trial that allows you to “try
before you buy.” The duration of the trial is 3 days per week of your
course, with a maximum of 21 days — beginning on the course start
date. To be assured of uninterrupted access to your course, you need to
submit an Access Code. If the trial deadline passes before you have a
chance to make your purchase, your work is saved. However, you can no
longer access your course until an Access Code is submitted.
When first getting started with an OWLv2 course your instructor
supplies you with a Course Key URL. The URL takes you to a
CengageBrain site that is unique to your course and automatically
provides the system with your Course Key. However, your instructor
may provide you with the key code, in that case you need to enter it at
the CengageBrain site yourself.
When accessing the CengageBrain page you can either log in as a
returning user or create a new account. Once your account is created,
you can use your CengageBrain My Home page to purchase course
materials, register for a new course, or open a registered course.

Click the page links in the header to navigate to the following pages:
Courses
The Courses page displays the names of your instructor(s) and
your overall grade for your OWLv2 courses. The Go To column
supplies buttons to open pages for viewing your assignments,
grades, and the syllabus specific to each course (when a
syllabus is available). From this page you can also register for
additional courses by using the Course Key provided by your
instructor.
Grades
By providing multiple views, the Grades page helps you
monitor your progress in your self‐study materials or find
specific grades for your graded assignments. You can easily
track your grades with the available grade details information
and sorting options for organizing the display of your
assignments, courses, and self‐study.
Assignments
The Assignments page provides an overview of your
assignment details. It shows you your assignment’s Date Due,
Grading Category, Actions you can perform, # of Submissions,
# of Submissions Allowed, Time Allowed, Notes, and your
Score for graded assignments that are complete.
The Assignments page also allows you to Take a graded
assignment for the first time, start an ungraded Practice
assignment, or Retake or Resume an assignment (when your
instructor permits it).
Practice can start an ungraded assignment, an assignment your
instructor is allowing you to take for practice after its
Unavailable Date, or an assignment you can practice after your
final submission. In practice mode, the assignment is fully
functional, but any work you have previously submitted for a
grade is unaffected.

Study Tools
The Study Tools page provides access to your registered
materials in OWLv2 such as eBooks, Tutorials, and Personalized
Study titles on a self‐study basis. Work that you access and
complete on the Study Tools page is for ungraded self‐study
only. Your progress is tracked in both your Grades page and
your instructor’s Gradebook.
However, your instructor has the ability to create a graded
assignment from any of your Study Tools content and hide that
content from your self‐study view.
PowerSearch
You may see a PowerSearch link if your school library
subscribes to the PowerSearch service. PowerSearch allows
students and instructors to access a wide range of periodical,
reference, and source information over multiple databases.

Viewing Your Syllabus
VIEWING YOUR SYLLABUS
Your instructor may provide a syllabus page or document to relate
important information about your class such as the start and end dates,
your instructor's office hours, or contact information. A syllabus may
also include a short description of the class, its objectives, and any
prerequisites.
If there is a syllabus linked to your course, a Syllabus button appears in
the Go To column. To view the syllabus for a course, you can click either
the button or the course name, which opens the syllabus in a new
browser window.
WORKING WITH ASSIGNMENTS
Your instructor creates and assigns activities in OWLv2, which you
access from your Assignments page. These activities include several
assignment types, from graded tests to tracked reading assignments,
and from interactive multi‐question groups to External assignments.
OWLv2 is able to grade most of your assignments electronically; it tracks
your progress, and then reports your scores to your instructor.
Assignment content can range from simple lists of multiple‐choice
questions, to complex equations with specialized editors, to reading an
eBook chapter or external Web page, all depending on the course,
subject, and textbook content.
Some assignments offer feedback, resources, or interactive simulations
to help your understanding of concepts and guide you in developing
your answers. Other assignments may include personalized learning
plans with study content that is determined by the results of a
diagnostic “pre‐test.”
Note: Your instructor can record any external, off‐line assignment and
include those points in your OWLv2 course score. These assignments
are then labeled as “External to this website,” and you can see basic
information on both your Grades and Assignments pages.

OWLv2 Assignments Overview Page
Your school may provide Quick Prep or Adaptive Study Plan content,
which are diagnostic assignments designed to help you get up to speed
with skills you need for your chemistry course. You should complete
your work in introductory Quick Prep assignments within the first week
or two of your course's start date, so that you are prepared for concepts
and topics you need to know. Check with your instructor to see if
introductory assignments are being offered and if the work you do in
these assignments counts toward your grade. Your instructor may make
it mandatory for you to complete these assignments before starting the
other assignments in your course.

Guidelines for Taking Assignments
These instructions detail how you can achieve the best results when
taking an assignment. You can make sure you get full credit for your
work by considering the following guidelines.
€ Do not use your browser's forward, back, close, refresh, or
history options. Doing so may cause you to lose your most
recent changes.
Wait for each page to completely load before proceeding.
€ If you must leave your computer, do not leave the assignment
open and inactive for more than 2 hours.
€ If the browser crashes or becomes unresponsive and you must
force quit, you can resume your take if you sign back into
OWLv2 within a few minutes.
€ In assignments that provide it, use the pop‐out Contact
Technical Support button in the upper right corner to open the
Cengage Learning support site in a new browser window. Use
the available resources to search the knowledgebase or open a
case if you are having problems using OWLv2.
€ In questions with multiple steps, be sure you submit a
response in all sections. Depending on how your instructor set
the assignment options, you may not be able to go back to edit
your answers in previous steps.
Note: If you have answers that are unsubmitted at the item
level, OWLv2 retains and records these responses when you
submit the entire assignment for a grade.
€ When using a constant required for a homework question,
check that the constant on your calculator matches the value
found on the Tables page in your assignment.
OWLv2 ‐ User Guide for Students
August 22, 2016 pg. 18
Working with Assignments
Note: You can access the Tables page by expanding the
References menu in your assignment and clicking the Tables
link. Links for a periodic table and scientific notation are also
located in References.
€ Complete and submit your assignments before the Due Date
and Time Allowed (not all assignments are timed or have due
dates).
€ There may be times when you can take an assignment past its
Due Date (generally with a penalty), if your assignment has an
Unavailable Date and you have not yet scored 100%. However,
instructors generally penalize for each day that passes after the
Due Date has passed.
€ When available, use the Email Instructor button to send an
message with a view of your response, your question, and the
specific assignment content on which you are working.
€ Assignments that permit you to save your progress and finish
at a later time have a Save and Exit button. Otherwise, you are
required to complete your assignment in one sitting.
€ When available, clicking the Submit Answer button saves and
scores your response. This action may also open additional
content in your question. OWLv2 may provide an warning of
any errors, however, you cannot change your final answer.
€ Click the Finish Assignment button in Test, Mastery, and Non‐
Mastery assignments when you are completely finished
answering all questions. This action submits the assignment for
a grade. Be aware that some assignments allow only one take.
(This button can also be labeled Finish or Submit Assignment
for Grading, depending on the assignment type.)

Taking a Mastery Assignment
Mastery assignments consist of groups of questions, with each group
based on a specific concept or topic. This assignment type provides a
unique scoring system that grades the your “mastery” of a concept
based on the number of correct responses for each group of questions.
A Mastery Assignment
When working on a Mastery assignment, you can move freely between
the groups and questions. You may also be able to use an option to retry
a group of questions to try for a better answer. Keep in mind that you
are allowed to complete a Mastery assignment and submit it for a grade
one time only, however, you can choose to save your assignment in
progress and resume it at a later time.

Taking a NonMastery or Test Assignment
This section provides step‐by‐step instructions on taking either a Non‐
Mastery or Test assignment. These two assignment types have similar
navigation during an assignment take, so their instructions are
presented together.
Test assignments differ mainly in that they present a stricter
assessment environment and they may provide you with more than one
take. You are not supplied with tutorials, simulations, eBook materials,
or other content resources during a Test. The References button
continues to be available and you can use its links to open a periodic
table, scientific notation instructions, and other tables of reference
materials.
Non‐Mastery assignments do not present question in groups, however,
they can provide a more sophisticated array of question types especially
designed to present chemistry concepts using interactive and media‐
rich content. Non‐Mastery assignments can be saved and resumed at a
later time and you may be allowed to retry questions for a better score,
however, you are allowed to submit them for a grade only once.
While taking a Non‐Mastery assignment, you may interact with
chemical and molecular editors and access reference materials. You can
use these features to help you construct your answers in the correct
format. While taking this assignment, you may find that some content
is simply reading, while others are tutorials that lead you through a
step‐by‐step example of the current topic.
Note: During an assignment, never close your browser, go to another
site, or use your browser's forward and back buttons—you may lose
your current work, and the assignment is counted as a “take.” Use only
the navigation buttons and links within OWLv2 and be sure each page
loads completely before proceeding.

Taking a Personalized Study Assignment
Personalized Study assignments are learning tools that evaluate your
knowledge and help you gauge your unique study needs. The
Personalized Study Plan generated from your “pre‐test” results focuses
your study time on the key concepts and problems you need to learn
the most.
Your work on a Personalized Study assignment is graded only when you
access it from the Assignments page (even if you can also access it from
the Study Tools page for self‐study).
Typically, a Personalized Study assignment consists of a Pre‐Test, a
Personalized Study Plan, and a Post‐Test.
You start by taking the Pre‐Test, which provides you with an interactive,
personalized study plan based on your initial test results. These study
plans vary from one discipline to another, but typically include tutorials,
interactive exercises, videos, animations, figures, and other on‐line
learning materials drawn from your text.
After you have worked through the Personalized Study Plan, you can
take a Post‐Test. Taking the Post‐Test allows OWLv2 to assess your
progress, and then provide you with additional, revised study materials
to help you focus on areas where you need to improve.
When Study Tools are given as a graded assignment, your instructor
may choose to score the Pre‐Test, exclude the Pre‐Test or Post‐Test
from the assignment entirely, or turn off access from the Study Tools
page as your instructor may want to prevent self‐study on material
intended for a grade.

Taking a Quick Prep Assignment
The content in Quick Prep assignments consists of review material
covering key concepts to prepare you for your chemistry course. These
assignments supply tests to evaluate your knowledge and then help you
determine which topics you should review. The information generated
from the results from your initial assessment determines which Study
Plan topics you need to focus on the most.
While taking a Quick Prep v1 (QP v1) assignment you work your way
through a diagnostic Pre‐Test, an adaptive Study Plan, and a Post‐Test.
Quick Prep v2 (QP v2) assignment types present you with a single,
diagnostic Quiz. Both types of Quick Prep assignments use your results
from the assessments to produce the recommended, adaptive Study
Plan.
€ The Pre‐Test or Quiz is generally your first step, which when
completed, supplies you with a Study Plan of topics you should
review, based on the results from your answers.
Note: Depending on the assignment settings, if you score well
enough on a QP v1 Pre‐Test it counts as your final score. You
will not be required to complete the Study Plan or Post‐Test.
€ The Study Plan content is available at any time, however, after
you have completed the Pre‐Test or Quiz the sections in the
Study Plan you need to review are marked as Required.
€ The Post‐Test is available once you have completed and
reviewed the required topics in your QP v1 Study Plan (or you
can choose to retake the Quiz in QP v2). Taking a Post‐Test or
retaking the Quiz assesses your improvement after self‐study.
