SINUMERIK InSight Volumetric Compensation System Attention! Machine tools can be more accurate! E-Brochure - January 2009 The situation The idea Every machine tool falls victim to minor, systematic geometric errors in the feed axis control system. On any linear axis these are linear position errors, horizontal and vertical straightness errors as well as roll, pitch and yaw. Further inaccuracies take the form of squareness errors between the machine components. On a 3-axis machine, the geometric errors on the tool holder alone add up to 21. Additionally, geometric errors have to be taken into account for 5-axis machines. To use brand new compensation methods integrated in the control system to fully compensate geometric errors. SINUMERIK Answers for industry. The solution With the Volumetric Compensation System (VCS) of SINUMERIK 840D solution line, it is possible to achieve a further significant reduction in the residual positioning error within the entire work envelope for 3-axis machines as well for 5-axis machines. SINUMERIK Volumetric Compensation System Attention! Machine tools can be more accurate! Description of function: All 21 geometric errors on the linear axes are measured before the VCS control option is commissioned. SINUMERIK "Solution Partners" can provide, for example, this laser calibration service. The recorded error curves are converted to a VCS file and stored on the SINUMERIK 840D sl. Users of Renishaw, API and Etalon laser measurement systems can employ software tools developed by the instrument manufacturer with which individual curves can be converted to the VCS file format required by SINUMERIK CNCs quickly, easily and reliably. The errors on the rotary axes can be identified within minutes by the SINUMERIK cycle 996 "Measuring kinematics". At the push of a button, the cycle results are simply transferred to the Traori machine data to compensate the errors. When both the functions VCS and Traori are activated, the accuracy throughout the work envelope of the 3-axis or 5-axis machine is improved. What the customer says: VCS was extensively tested by the Italian machine manufacturer Breton on a 5-axis Flymill of type 1000/2T DD K20 . For Breton's technical director Giuseppe Andorlini, this much is certain: "With VCS software the CNC can dynamically compensate not only the traditional positioning errors of each axis but also the geometrical errors inside of the total working volume. This means that the machine builder can maintains its stated precision reducing the scraping time or, as we have tested, can increases the machine precision maintaining its stated standard. VCS is a very good software to improve machine precision in the working volume to reach very high precision at the tool tip in 5 axis contouring. VCS software is easy to install and with Renishaw system it is possible to update VCS parameters by our technicians and reducing the needed time only at few hours ".
